Transformer Prime free from Wi-Fi woe in UK, Asus promises

Good news if you're planning to buy an Asus Transformer Prime: none of the Primes on sale in this country suffer from the Wi-Fi bug plaguing the transforming tablet.

The Wi-Fi problem has delayed the Transformer Prime actually reaching customers, with limited stock coming to the UK also slowing things down. But more units are on the way, and Asus swears they're free from Wi-Fi woe.

"After extensive checks we can confirm that no units have been supplied to the UK with a known Wi-Fi issue," the company promises.

If you do encounter a problem with your Prime, call Asus on 0870 1208 340 and get all shirty about it.

The wonky Wi-Fi isn't the only problem affecting the quad-core, Android-powered, keyboard-detaching Transformer Prime: some units suffer from an issue with location, as the Transformer Prime's aluminium body affects the GPS antenna's reception. Blimey -- if it isn't one thing it's another.

If you've bought the Transformer Prime and your GPS is giving you gyp, you can return the tablet to Asus for a full refund, or keep it with an extended warranty of 18 months, an increase of six months.

The Prime also faced controversy when Asus decided to lock the bootloader to prevent owners tinkering with their tablet, until the backlash caused a backtrack. And that's not to mention the inevitable legal attention from Transformers company Hasbro over the Transformer Prime name.

Are you primed for the Prime? If you've ordered one, has it arrived yet -- and does it work? Tell us in the comments or on our Facebook page.

I decided to keep my pre-order despite the early troubles. Got the email today that it's been dispatched by Currys and now the news that our devices should be free of the WIFI issue means I'm back to being generally happy to receive it!

Over here in Japan it still doesn't have a release date and yet they are still announcing different versions in the rest of the world. I've been waiting for this for what seems to be forever....

would be interested to know how they have fixed the wifi issue. I was under the impression that the Wifi and GPS issues were caused by the metal back of the device. so unless they have modified the design and moved the wifi antenna, or changed the back in some way, I'm not sure how they've have fixed it.

CNET, Go find out, go on, off you go, stop playing around pretending your the Borg!

PS ASUS have push a new GPS driver v 6.9.13, which from all accounts makes GPS alot better.

Can't decide between the Prime or wait for Ipad 3. I think IOS is a much better operating system by bar nun.
I do like the keyboard dock on the prime.

@killer pants
Go get the ipad 3 if you think the OS is so great. Maybe you will get it by 2013.

@Killerpants

you can get keyboard docks for the ipad, they just don't recharge the ipad. other then that hardware is pretty much gunna be the same, if you like IOS then go for that, but they have as many issues has other tablet makes. When it comes down to it, your the one buying it so your the one that has got to be the most comfortable, having the latest tech isn't always great if you can't use it!

My prime was delivered Wednesday m orning next day, today it was picked up via courier back to EBuyer.

I so wanted it to work, I tired and tried. .. But no matter what I did, what apps I used, or didn't, it would lock up and restart. :( I won't be getting another till I know its 100%.

I've picked up my Prime in CPW on wednesday, took it back Friday and wait for the exchange next week.

Wifi wont connect unless it is less than a meter away from the router!!! Don't even think about using it upstairs.

After reading many accounts of whether the transformer prime has or hasn't wifi issues in the UK, I took the plunge and purchased one to try for myself. Here are my results when located side by side with an original transformer model.
original model...wifi strength... good...speed 52 mbps
prime model......wifi strength... fair......speed 24mbps
Point proven.
Finally I have the tingling sensation that comes from the metal covers if touched while charging the prime. This disapears when the charger is switched off.
Form your own oppinion obviously, but mine are based on live tests.
cheers

** Dodgy units have been shipped to the UK **. I ordered TF201 from Very on 30th March. Wifi only worked when I stood 4ft from router. Was collected on 1st April. I received a full refund and I have reordered - praying it's ok this time.

I bought 2 of these. Great as long as you can carry your router wherever you go. Otherwise 8 feet away is about the farthest with a decent enough signal/ Any further and the internet could as well be in another world. Both were returned.

I wonder ho the new model, out today I think. will perform. Surely they cannot make the same mistake?????????????
