Various retailers have started putting prices on the 16GB Samsung Galaxy Tab. It's bad news if you thought it would be cheap, as, so far, it costs more than a 16GB iPad with Wi-Fi and 3G.
UK retailer eXpansys has priced the 16GB Tab at £680, with a release date of 11 October. The German version of Amazon offers it at €799, which converts to around £665. Clove Technology has pinned a £617 price tag on the device.
These prices are for the unlocked version of the Tab. Once the networks get their hands on it, the Tab will be subsidised, although this probably means lengthy contracts that could end up being more expensive in the long run. The aforementioned prices aren't the manufacturer's recommended retail price either -- Samsung has made no firm statement on pricing yet -- so they may be subject to change.
As well as currently costing more than an equivalent iPad (£530), the 16GB Tab is more expensive than competing Android tablets. ViewSonic's 10-inch ViewPad 100 offers 16GB of storage, plus multi-touch and Wi-Fi (but not 3G) support, for £550.
Perhaps the expense will be worth it. We took a look at the Tab at the IFA trade show and felt it does everything the iPad does and much more besides.
Until we get some review time with the Tab and final pricing details, we can't make any definitive judgements. But we'll put the question out there, nonetheless -- would you pay more than £600 for the Tab?

I think I'd actually rather get the iPad than this.
Bah - I really want a tablet but the iPad is too expensive - and nobody else seems to be doing it RIGHT!

I would not buy one for that price I have an iPad 16gb wifi only model the app store is the best ever in my opinion

I am a massive fan of Android, but that price, put together with concerns over how app developers will use the extra screen real estate put me off. I will see what the price point is around Christmas time, but I personally will wait until January when Apple release the refresh of the iPad.

Samsung demonstrate with this product that they are still stuck in the 'old' technology world. You can almost see their reasoning written on the device: "This device has more features than the iPad (camera, expandable memory), therefore we can sell it for more money".
But just like in the world of the iPod, where anyone who owned a Zune had to explain to their friends why they didn't have an iPod, Samsung Tab owners will be buying into years of "Is that an iPad -- can I have a look?" "no, it's the Samsung Tab", "oh, ok, never mind", "don't you want a look then?", "well, no, thanks all the same". In consumer electronics, that is an enormous reason not to buy the Samsung -- even if it were half the price.

I want this badly. I don't think you can take the prices seriously until it's actually released in the UK. It looks like it's going to be subsidised by the networks, noone will pay that for a non-apple product.

This product when first noticed and talked about was priced at about 300.00 WTF is it with the pricing.

All they have done, is taken all the complaints about the iPad when it came out (lack of Camera, Phone, Flash Support) stuck it into their own version of the tablet running Android and then because of these extra features ... bumped up the price ....
Somehow, I have to agree Martin Turner (above) ... and I just don't forsee queue's of people outsite stores waiting to get their hands on the TAB ... I too am keen to see what Apple has in store for the iPad refresh, as it's bound to happen sooner or later!

When I saw this I was pleasantly surprised. But concerning the price, I find this a R.I.P. machine. Sansung thinks it can ship 10.000.000 by next year? Think again Samsung. Hardly nobody will pay that for a tablet witch is 30% smaller and only has a few extras. Think People are writh to say Samsung is still living in the 20th Century. If ther want to win this the price has to come down considerably.

Reason to buy if you ask me. "I'm not a douche and I don't have an iPad" Still do not think there is a need for tablet computing, not in my life anyway.

i was starting to get enthusiastic about getting a tab then after seeing the prices coming our way i took a reality check and realised i could get a pretty decent spec laptop for the same price.
i wish my thought process worked faster than my wandering eye!!

As a student I would wish to have the cabability of ereader, web-browser and phone in one. However, the price appears to be forbidding. I will probably wait untill I can either afford it (some two years) or go for second hand 16GB Ipad

It's awesome but the price - if it's quoted correctly is poor. The equivalent iPad is £600 so it needs to be prced at that level or, realistically, slightly below. If it were £550 then it's a steal because, frankly, the iPad looks fat and ugly next to it.

They should have a cheaper, WiFi only version because this is not worth the price at all. Take in comparrison the Toshiba Folio 100 which has the Tegra 2 chipset in it, it will be far more powerful and a fraction of the cost. Samsung don't have the fanbase that Apple do so their pricing of this is absolutely obsurd, and frankly greedy.

I think the iPad is a better product. If this isn't a "poor man's iPad" then I can't see where it fits. The true Android iPad competitor has yet to arrive.

ipad got the screen res right, wide screen only good for movie viewing not websites or reading PDFs.
guess we'll see in time :)
Anonymous 14 September, 2010 07:19
iPad got the screen res right. websites look better in 4:3 than 16:9 and PDFs too. only movies are cool in widescreen format. net books should shown this already. 600 high is NOT enough on 7 or 10 inch screens.
guess we'll in a few months...

Samsung has just commited suicide if £680 is the price the consumers will have to pay for the Galaxy Tab... There are so many devices coming to the market soon. Many of them much cheaper - see Archos 10 inch Android tablet for £300. I do want to buy one but I'll wait until next year when the madness is over and the prices better reflect their real value.

It may have received many favourable reviews against the iPad but to have any chance of being successful in the UK I think it has to be cheaper than the iPad. At this price I see the tab doing ok but not taking off hugely like it could have. The mass market of non-techy people know the name apple and won't be purchasing a more expensive product that to them does the same job. http://www.samsunggalaxytabreview.org
