Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) joins 7-inch model

MWC 2012

Samsung outed the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2 a couple of weeks ago, and now here's its 10.1-inch bigger brother, which confusingly has the same name.

Like the 7-incher, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1-inch (sigh) runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich, but the screen resolution has been bumped up to 1,280x800-pixels (from 1,024x600 on the smaller model). But aside from these differences, and the size, it's very much the same beast.

On board are the same 1GHz dual-core processor, the same 1GB of RAM, and the same Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity. Samsung's own TouchWiz is slathered over the top of the ICS OS like chocolate sauce on a, er, ice cream. Also like the 7-incher, it has a 3-megapixel camera on the back, plus a 640x480-pixel front-facer for video calling.

About the only difference is the battery, which on the 10.1 is a li-ion 7,000mAh model, compared to 4,000mAh on the 7.0. That should give us some extra hours of use before needing a recharge.

The 7-incher comes in an 8GB flavour too, with 16GB and 32GB variants of both sizes. Both have microSD slots, letting you add up to another 32GB storage on a memory card.

No prices are given, but we'll be able to get our hands on these in the UK in March, which isn't long to wait at all.

Samsung also outed a phone with a projector built-in, the Galaxy Beam, which it actually demoed a couple of years ago at Mobile World Congress. So if you see anything a little wacky this year, remember it could be in shops a few months down the line.

Samsung had to redesign itsĀ originalĀ 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab after Apple had it banned in Germany. But the rejigged version was deemed fit for sale.

We'll be bringing you all the latest from MWC, so stay tuned to mwc.cnet.co.uk for more.

I'm gravely disappointed Samsung! How are you planning on defeating Apple with such specs?! 1280x800 screen resolution? 1GHz dual-core processor? Release in March most likely clashing with the iPad's release? Well, good luck guys:)

Unless they drastically undercut Apple on price. But yeah, it's generally weird how little interest the competition seems to have in halting the iPad 3 in its tracks.
