Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Jelly Bean update hits Brits

Samsung's larger Galaxy Tab 2 tablet appears to be getting its gob stuffed with Jelly Beans, as reports suggest the long-awaited update is arriving on UK devices.

The Android 4.1.1 update is arriving on the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, SamMobile reports, though it seems only the Wi-Fi model is being upgraded for now. One eager tweeter also got in touch to let us know the update had arrived on his UK tablet. If you've seen the update landing on your device, let me know in the comments, and be sure to say which country you live in to help inform other 'droid devotees.

The update brings Samsung's larger tablet onto a more recent version of Android, though it's not quite as cutting-edge as the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update, which is currently the preserve of devices such as the Google Nexus 4 and Nexus 10.

It's not quite up-to-date then, but Jelly Bean on the Tab 2 10.1 will introduce features such as Google Now, which gives you Google results and reminders based on your location and search history.

Notifications have been given a makeover too, and widget adjustment has been tweaked so that other widgets will kindly shift out the way when you organise items on your homescreens. Don't expect a massive visual change from the update though, as Samsung is filtering the update through its own-brand TouchWiz interface.

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 earned a solid three stars in our review, in which we praised the design and responsive screen, but criticised the high price and stutter when playing 1080p movies. While only about half a year old, it's fair to say the Tab 2 10.1 has already been outpaced by spangly new tablets such as the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, which is also made by Samsung.

Are tablets becoming obsolete too quickly? Or is the Tab 2 10.1 still a decent device? Have your say in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.

anonymous 8 December, 2012 21:44

No update here. I have a Tab 2 10.1 3G. I like in the UK, London area. No update.

I suspect this update going into the wild is a total internet fabrication. I saw a lot of hoax (I've got the update) posts on some websites when the s2 went to ICS. Probably the same thing!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 8 December, 2012 22:19

Also have Tab 2 10.1 3G in UK. As far as i'm aware only 'WiFi Only' Tab 2 has the update.

No sign of it on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tab but this morning it arrived on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" - right on time for my birthday!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 10 December, 2012 13:37

Got mine on Saturday and Sunday. I own two Tablets (one for my daughter and one for me /wife). The Google Sat Nav pre-installed on the Tab did NOT work before without Wifi but now does. i.e. you dont need Wifi as GPS works fine in the car. I presume you can take this Galaxy Tab 10.1 ANYWHERE in the World and it should work right? Don't need Tom Tom or Garmin. With £50 cashback offered by Samsung this has got to be the best deal around. If you have Ice Cream Sandwitch, just leave you Galaxy Tab on for a few hours with Wifi connected and dont play with it. After simply goto settings and look for upgrade and hey presto it should show 286 Mb of download. Nice work Samsung, beat the Apple Pad anyday

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 10 December, 2012 18:44

It looks like the firmware is available (and you can use Odin to install it) for only certain Note 10.1 versions - the N8010 (wifi only) is not available yet as far as I can tell

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 10 December, 2012 22:15

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 11 December, 2012 16:49

Got the upgrade today. First thing I noticed is the swipe L/R in Gallery photos is very jerky - not impressed, it was smoother in ICS

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 11 December, 2012 18:36

I think Samsung are releasing the Jelly Bean update in stages to different device owners. 3G/Wifi note 10.1 has it but the wifi version does not. Tab 2 wifi version now has it but the 3G/Wifi does not have it. Its probably Samsungs way of covering a larger range of customers without overloading its servers. Im hoping its next batch of releases will be the note 10.1 wifi version and the tab 2 3G/Wifi; we just need to be patient. I have the note 10.1 wifi version so hope the wait is not too long.

I am new to the whole Android tablet thing and downloaded the software upgrade yesterday (Hants, UK). I was then pretty gutted to find that my lovely home pages which I had put together in the last 2 weeks since I got the tablet had all gone and was replaced with those annoying apps and widgets that I don't want. I also prepared the status bar on the botton rather than at the top. How annoying. Be warned. Is there anyway of uninstalling the update and returned to ICS? Is it my imagination but does the home screen also not seem as sharp in clarity with Jelly bean?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 December, 2012 19:08

Samsung Apps wanted to download an update so I agreed to it - now I have a No1 showing on the Icon and the application takes ages to load up. Went into My page to see what the notification was about and that page just shows a thinking symbol. Looks like Samsung have a bug in their own program as it was working fine before the Jell Bean update. Like the person above I would like to go back to ICS- this is too much like the Windows problems - get an update and it screws up your tablet.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 15 December, 2012 20:17

Had my update a couple of days ago. Anyone else had any issues? when I view any hirse photos, instead of getting cripser and sharper after a second or two as normal, the screen dissapears into bright white?!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 December, 2012 00:50

I have had the upgrade but i have a problem the tablet will let me make the screen bigger but will not let me make it go back to it's normal size plus everything has become very jerky.

No update yet for the Tab2 10.1 3G version. Samsung have told me there is no plan to release an update for their flagship 3G version!!! Anyone else got news on the 3G update?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 December, 2012 12:22

No way! They better release an update for the 3G version! Don't see why both versions of Note 10.1, Tab 2 7" and WiFi 10" has update and not 10" 3G? Surely it's round the corner!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 December, 2012 13:31

"Regarding your query please be advised that there currently is no
official release date for a newer firmware version for your product."
This is a response for the Tab2 10.1 3G Jelly Bean query.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 December, 2012 14:32

Just updated to 4.1.1 on my Galaxy Tab2 10.1 in the UK.
My scoll up/down does not seem so smooth.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 December, 2012 15:47

I can understand they can't provide anyone with an 'official release date' for the 3G version. Surely it will be released. I don't ever recall a certian version of a tablet not having a software update when another device of the same kind has it, For the past 2 weeks or so Samsung have released wave after wave of software updates for Note 10.1 and Tab 2 7"/10". I'm predicting a release next week. If there isn't one.. then I would get concerned..

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 December, 2012 22:04

Has anybody in the US received the update to 4.1 yet? Very few people are reporting what region/country they are in. I'm in the states, on tab 2 10.1 and still only on 4.0.4.

In UK. Have a Tab2 10.1 wifi/3G no update as at today.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 December, 2012 16:49

the update has really buggered my Tab2 10.1. In Gallery, when I swipe the screen the next photo hesitates when about half way across then snaps into place. Very hard on the eyes. Got a notification (orange circle with number 1 in it) on the Sam Apps icon but nothing shows up when you go to the info screen. Thinking about doing a factory reset but worried if this screws it up more. Anybody think that Samsung might put out a download to fix the problems that we all seem to be having - very tempted to get an Ipad (my son has never had any problem with his!)

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 December, 2012 21:32

since jelly bean uploaded my samsung account wont work. says enable but cant see to enable...
Rubbishhh

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 December, 2012 21:41

Damn, does seem to be a lot of issues with the update for people. Not sure if i'm looking as forward to an update for my 10.1 3G model. If it ever arrives, I will do it with a clean factory reset install. It is recommended for a smoother install and optimises performance. Hmm..

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 18 December, 2012 09:16

Did factory reset but JB keeps loading, cant get back to JCS. Anybody know how to get back the original ICS onto my Tab 2 10.1 5110 model?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 18 December, 2012 12:52

You may have to 'flash' the rom back to ics, a bit technical, depending on your ability to do these kind of things. xda-developers' forums are great at providing step by step guides into doing this.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 19 December, 2012 20:52

My tab 2 10.1 downloaded 280mb jelly bean update this evening, it doesnt look any different, no nexus7 style desktop or taskbar, settings menu looks different and has some new features, but it seems to work fine, no noticable improvements though.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 1 January, 2013 09:10

the Nexus 7 and 10 are soooooo much better. Samsung should spend more of the $6 billion it spends each year on marketing (8 times Apple and more than Coca Cola) on making quailty products!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 3 January, 2013 08:46

Ummm, the Nexus 10 is made by SAMSUNG! Sorry to burst your bubble... And the guy from Massachusetts, who bought the Tab at Best Buy, how is this possible? Was your item refurbished, because the Tab only comes stock with ICS? I would be curious to know. US always gets the leftovers, but hopefully we will get the update with less bugs in the mix (e.g. all of the problems listed in the above comments)...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 3 January, 2013 08:56

Coca Cola is already a very reputable product (circa 1886) and Apple has dominated the market (besides the nineties) since the mid seventies with the release of the Apple I, in personal computers. Samsung's first PC came out in 1982, but they have actually been around longer than almost all of the competitors (circa 1938). Only to find it's break in the electronic industry in the late 1960s. Their products are very efficient, but the Galaxy Tab 2 was meant to be a "budget friendly" model. It is not meant to compete against the rest, but it is a reliable tablet at a decent price. Many of their products are top of the line. Don't hate!

I am using the Wi-fi model in The Netherlands and still there is no update. I understand that 3G model receives the update late due to the cellular network providers in every country adds their own software. However, why the wi-fi model? Why do I have to wait that long. It has been more than 3 months that the update is released. Why? why? why?. This is enough.
I have recommended Galaxy Note to all my friends just because I was quite happy with my Galaxy Tab 2. I have changed 6 people who were considering to buy an ipad and they bought Galaxy Tab and galaxy note. However, I regret doing that. At least apple users get update for 3 or more years. It is not that I will switch to apple but you want to compete you have compete in giving updates as well.
