Nokia 700 bringing Symbian Belle to all UK networks

Nokia is putting the slim in Symbian with the Nokia 700. It's the slimmest phone to be powered by Symbian, Nokia's own software, and it'll be available on Vodafone, O2, Virgin, Orange and T-Mobile.

So the 700 is leaner than a fashion model during Lent, but what features will you be sliding into your skinny jeans if you bag one for yourself?

The screen is a 3.2-inch touchscreen that displays 16 million colours. The 5-megapixel camera shoots high-definition video and has a flash for low-light situations. There's 2GB of memory on board to store music, films and pictures, and you can listen to tunes for two days straight without needing to recharge.

All this is powered by Symbian Belle software. That means there are six home screens, which you can customise by dragging and dropping apps, widgets and shortcuts so your favourite stuff is always to hand.

Shortcuts to your friends show their pictures so all you have to do is lovingly stroke their face to call them, or if they've kept you waiting outside the Brixton Ritzy for nearly half an hour (ahem), you can angrily jab at their face to ask them where the goshdarn heck they are.

The 700 also features near-field communication (NFC), which lets it communicate with other devices just by waving them together. In theory that could mean paying for things by touching your phone on a till, similar to a contactless credit card or Oyster card, but few shops are set up for that yet. Instead, you can share your pictures, videos and music to a friend's NFC phone with a dainty tap of the two phones together. There's even a tie-in with Angry Birds.

If you already have a Nokia phone, you should be able to try out the Belle update without paying a penny. The update is coming to the Nokia N8, E7, C7, E6, X7 and Nokia 500 before the end of the year.

Price will vary depending on your network and contract, and you can choose from Vodafone, O2, Virgin and Everything Everywhere -- that's Orange and T-Mobile. The Nokia 700 will be on sale in early October.

WHY? Why does symbian refuse to die gracefully?
Can someone get a gun, and take this ailling donkey into the pastures and put it out of its misery!

I don't see anything ailing. I see a really nice smartphone.
Why do you want less competition in the market ?
That sort of thinking got us MS Windows.
Sorry if you'd like a tidier life dude.

Nokia, please please, let it go. It was nice while it lasted, but symbian is gone over. move on, go to android (or WP7 if you have to) just let it die.

I would argue though that nokia still are one of the largest market leaders in actual device sales...mainly due to the price range especially in smaller countries etc....so hell, if they are STILL making money on it (though I know they did post a profit loss recently) I would keep milking it...

But I would say, the moment that symbian starts taking more money from the R&D department away from say their Windows Phone 7 development, then yes, maybe its time to put that old girl down..

Though I still don't know why they didn't just cut back full as a phone maker and go with both Android and WP7...seemed to a company losing money that would of been the smarter move to make, to really cover all their bases and probably secure a much larger percent of the market again with superior hardware....well could you imagine a dual core 1.5ghz 1GB ram Nokia phone on both Android and Windows....it would be a probably be a phone of the year...well...if we don't count that fruit phone....what was it again? lol

I like it, Android and IOS is boring me now its all the same just wrapped up differently and none of them are solid performers. Is it just me or are smart phones becoming a pain in the bum with the constant app updates constant battery charging. WTF I miss the Nokia days when everything just seemed to work properly, no insane promises no crazy half finished apps just good stuff that did the job.

I may get this because im sick of having the same shit that everyone else has Nokia is dead long live Nokia..

Sorry, that's Symbian? You sure someone at Nokia hasn't just skinned Android onto it in Photoshop?? Because it looks a lot like my Gingerbread powered ZTE Blade (only mine has the HTC clock)!

Anyway, Nokia, bin Symbian, it's passed it's best before date. Oh, and bin Windows mobile off, yes yes, it's excellent, but still not as good as Android!
