MSI GT740 and GT640: Flamin' fast, polygon flingin' laptops

Attention people who like to shoot virtual things in the virtual face with virtual weapons: MSI has just unleashed the GT640 and the GT740 -- a couple of gaming laptops designed to chuck polygons around faster than monkeys fling poo.

Let's start with the big dog GT740 (pictured). This £1,399 monster packs a 17-inch widescreen display hooked up to an Nvidia GeForce 250M graphics card and the brand-new, ludicrously fast Intel i7 720QM processor. You also get 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 640GB hard drive and a Blu-ray drive, people. Ain't no skimpin' over here.

The only problem is it's not very pretty. Actually, that's being kind -- black and red might have looked good on Dennis the Menace or Freddy Krueger, or the CNET UK masthead, but on the GT740, like its GT725 ancestor, it just looks cheap. Sure, the machine will help you frag the hell out of your Alienware-owning mates at LAN parties, but that's only because they'll be too busy laughing at your MSI to frag back.

If the 17-inch GT740 isn't ringing your bell, MSI is also offering a 15.4-inch alternative known as the GT640. This uses the exact same core spec as its 3.2kg big brother, but weighs slightly less at 2.7kg and its battery has six cells instead of nine. It also costs £1,349, which leaves you £50 to spend on your favourite game.

The GT740 will go on sale in November and the GT640 will follow shortly after in December.
