Microsoft must 'think twice' about its upcoming Surface device, Acer has warned, saying the kickstand-sporting tablet could negatively impact the entire computer business.
Acer boss JT Wang told the Financial Times that the Taiwanese company had given Microsoft the stern warning.
"We have said, 'Think it over. Think twice,'" Wang intoned, possibly waggling his finger in an authoritative manner. "It will create a huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction."
Rather than worrying about whether shoppers will take to Microsoft's own-brand Windows 8 tablet, Acer seems a bit more concerned with whether Surface could shove Windows kit built by other companies (let's say Acer, just for example) out of the limelight.
"If Microsoft is going to do hardware business, what should we do?" said Wang, whose company, one of the biggest computer makers in the world, builds some decent Windows laptops, and the Aspire S3 ultrabook. "Should we still rely on Microsoft, or should we find other alternatives?"
Tough talk, and I'm sure there are other Windows partners feeling snubbed by Microsoft's decision to craft its own hardware. But having seen so many Android partners -- including Acer -- failing to make an impact in the bitterly fought tablet war, I can understand why Microsoft wants to take matters into its own hands.
Google seems to be thinking along the same lines, having recently released its own-brand (and excellent) Nexus 7 tablet. Although built by Asus, Google is doubtless hoping it can use its recognisable name to persuade shoppers to take a chance on a non-Apple slate.
Microsoft is rocking the boat, but could building its own tablet sink the software giant? Or sail the Redmond-built ship toward a brave new horizon? Send me your predictions in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

If you buy Acer products you should be lobotomised.

I had an Acer Ferrari laptop for 8 years, it's the best Windows laptop I've ever had. Apart from my MacBook, I would say it's the best laptop I've ever had.
Nothing wrong with Acer Kit. They are right though, if MS find themselves the only company producing windows tablets, they'll lose out. Which would be sad, even though Win8 is completely wrong for desktop computers, it looks like a great tablet OS.

Basicaly what they're saying is that they don;t think they can compete with Surface because it's better than what they can do.

If you say "If you buy Acer products you should be lobotomised." three times you will be lobotomised. ; )

I bought an Acer Timeline laptop around three years ago and it was the most poorly manufactured laptop I have ever come across. It looked great, worked okay for the first year but then different components started failing. First the headphone jack stopped working, then the screen stopped working, then the hard drive developed a fault and finally the battery suddenly died overnight. So far I have replaced the screen, hard drive and battery to keep it going but I have no doubt something else will break soon.
Basically I would never buy another Acer product, regardless of what Microsoft does or does not produce.

@Peter Hudson - I wouldn't say best ever but I too was extremely happy with my Acer laptop at uni. Very cheap for the spec and a great build.

It is nonsense from Acer. Apple has been doing it with consistent fabulous result, Google is about to do it, there is no evidence to prove Acer statement is right. If Microsoft stays unchanged then the current trend will prevail, Microsoft will definitely become another IBM, it will not die but it will not be significant anymore.

Google should make Android 5.0 a fully desktop-capable OS (it already has keyboard + mouse support, all it needs is a taskbar and resizable windows) and aim it squarely at Windows 8 refugees. They could make desktop Linux a reality.

microsoft just seem to be doing what google did with the nexus line, whats the big problem and yea acer are rubbish

There is nothing any worse about Acer than other makes, so the lobotomised comments are over the top. I would recommend to Acer they start using Linux thereby avoiding Microsofts over the top costs. This way they can lower the price of their machines making them more popular.

Microsoft will not stop in their aim to be "all things to all people" unless they are frustrated financially, as they have been a couple of times by the EU. Even then it only slowed them for a couple of breaths.

Linux is amazing, might give people opportunity to see for themselves :)

Yes they should sell their laptops with dual boot to Linux, just to scare M$ a bit. Then M$ will stop making HW in a heart beat! Hehehe ;-)!

Acer may have a point in recognising that the Surface will have an effect on the existing Windows eco-system, including the PC manufacturing sector, but the market is sufficiently large to accommodate this. And the surface and the subsequent "metro-isation" of the user interface for the Microsoft Windows 8 eco-system should drive sales of computing devices across all form factors.

Linux is awful, well the versions I've tried are. It took about 10 times longer to install the same app on Ubuntu as it did in Win 7
I want to click an installer and it work, rather than d1cking around with terminal commands
Not to mention the fact that the 2 times I installed it I got different results, using the same version! CRAP
