LG Optimus Pad set to bring the G-Slate tablet to Blighty

LG spilled the beans on its G-Slate tablet earlier this week, but now the company has announced that it will be taking the wrappers off its long-anticipated Optimus Pad device at Mobile World Congress later this month too.

The latter news came buried at the bottom of a Korean press release today, below lots of information about the G-Slate, which is launching in the US this March. What the release doesn't make clear is whether the two devices are effectively one and the same.

We do already know a fair bit about the Optimus Pad, though. LG talked about the device last November, revealing that it will have an 8.9-inch screen, run the Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS, and include the Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor for extra grunt.

"While the existing tablet PCs focus on e-book, movie, music and the Internet functions, LG's new tablet PC is jumping into the market with more diverse content based on powerful functions," claimed an LG official at the time, hinting at more of a focus on HD video and perhaps gaming.

The US-focused G-Slate will also run Honeycomb, use the Tegra 2 processor, and support 720p HD video on the device, or 1080p video when connected to an HDTV. It's also got a 3D-capable 8.9-inch screen, albeit one that makes you wear 3D glasses. It's reasonable to assume that the Optimus Pad will feature the same specs.

Via the wonders of Google Translate, here's the key quote from the Korean press release: "2011 tablet PC market in earnest bloom competition to take place in the industry. LG Electronics North America, as well as global tablet PC market will cause the blast." Indeed.
