Lenovo ThinkPad 2 has Windows 8, gets up in iPad's business

Lenovo is hopping aboard the Windows 8 train, with a new slate that wants to out-business the iPad.

Details of the upcoming ThinkPad 2 tablet surfaced at the Verge, revealing that the 10.1-inch device will play host to 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Meanwhile specs that surfaced at Techin5 tip a 9.8mm thick frame, 650g weight and an 8-megapixel camera strapped to the tablet's rear. All that plus stylus support and dual-core Intel processors -- be still my beating BlackBerry.

An optional keyboard dock has also leaked, complete with an iconic red pointing stick in the centre.

Lenovo's ThinkPad tech is aimed at snappy-suited types who need technology to power high-profile meetings, speaking loudly on Bluetooth headsets and guzzling boardroom snacks.

Powered by Windows 8, the first version of Microsoft's desktop operating system designed with touchscreens in mind, the ThinkPad 2 could prove a nifty gadget for anyone who needs to access Office files, or would prefer a tablet that allows for multiple user profiles.

Those are both things that the iPad is rubbish at, and this is where gadgets like Lenovo's tablet, or the Windows RT-powered Microsoft Surface, could really shine. Apple's tablet may be great for lolling around on your sofa watching cat videos, but there are professionals out there pleading for a business-savvy tablet they can use at work.

Would you use this business-minded slate? Or should tablets be less about work and more about play? Let me know in the comments below or on our Facebook wall.

I cant help thinking that I expect thse who wish to look cool and media companies will continue to opt for Apple but Companies want a much more business approach will opt for a more familiar Windows operating system which soon may include Microsoft Office tablet version. Sure this will put a dent in Apple's sales figures.

I dont know too much about processors so Im not sure if a dual core intel processr will be better that a quadcore Arm but 2Gb of RAM is really good. Hardware aside, for the leisure user, apps is key and Apple far lead the way in this area.

I must admit I have on eye on a window tablet though. My work is specifically windows internet based and this would be a major plus.

Apple has a large app store but Apple's approach is very limited. Windows 8 can run actual programs and makes the ipad look like a toy rather than a serious computer. I think this is why business users will end up goiing for Windows 8 tables and general users will continue using the ipad or android based tablets. I only wonder with mobiles getting bigger screens i.e Galaxy note, will there really be a market for consumption only tablets like the Ipad or nexus7?? It's like when people used to carry round an ipod/MP3 player and a phone.

Finally, a tablet that proves, with a little help from Microsoft, that we really aren't living in the Post PC era... this is just another touchscreen based PC that will run circles around an iPad on many different levels.
