HP Envy x2 Surface-rival with full-fat Windows costs £799

HP's tablet-laptop hybrid Windows 8 PC has been given a price -- the Envy x2 can be yours for a quid shy of £800 when it goes on sale.

The Envy x2 looks like a tablet, but like many upcoming Windows 8 devices will slot into an accompanying keyboard dock, transforming it into a tablet. HP says the Envy x2 will go on sale in late October, meaning you should be able to pick it up over the next few days.

Like other Windows 8 touchscreen gadgets, the Envy x2 is living in the shadow of Microsoft's own Surface tablet, which has an attachable keyboard cover and is significantly cheaper at £399.

There's a catch however -- the Surface runs Windows RT, which only lets you install programs from Microsoft's own app store.

The Envy x2 on the other hand has the full version of Windows 8, making it much more like an ordinary laptop in terms of what you can do -- but one that turns into a tablet and runs software built for touchscreens.

I know what you're thinking, on paper it's the perfect device. I have a few reservations though -- will the Atom processor inside this unusual gadget be powerful enough to avoid the occasional sluggishness that plagues the Surface?

The full-fat version of Windows could prove tiresome to the x2's battery too, and we're still waiting to see how prices for these hybrid devices settle. In a month or so the £800 Envy x2 could look like a real bargain, or a total rip-off.

As such, I'd advise waiting for our in-depth review before splashing your cash. We'll have a full evaluation with a star rating as soon as possible, so stay tuned.

Surely noone would be thick enough to spend 800 quid on a glorified netbook? Thats what the Atom was designed for
I'd expect at the very least an i5 CPU for that kind of money

I thought they'd learned from their mistake *cough* HP TOUCHPAD *cough* ....evidently not. You're going up against competition with an underwhelming product. HP touchpad was an alright thing but the OS lacked the backing of developers...here you are pricing it against ultrabooks and expecting it to sell when it's powered by an Atom.....definitely not learned a thing

Seems over priced and most tablets from the iPad to Nexus 7 to even the Blackberry Playbook you can get an attachable keyboard.

I don't know why people are comparing this to iPad and Nexus 7?! This is a fully functional laptop and can be used as tablet too... But I agree that the price is too high.

I don't know either Bassam. I guess because it falls in the tablet category, but in my opinion Windows 8 offers so much more. I don't care for the lack of apps on the surface interface ( i dont use my tablet for apps or games anyway cos of touchscreen interface), with core i5 on board the laptop side of those devices will run all of Windows programs and games, which there is more than android and ios combined and then multiplied by a hundred ;-)

Its a "tablet-laptop" hybrid. The keyboard only provides a battery boost and nothing else from what Ive read so far about it. There are numerous cheaper tablets out there that can do the same, although the keyboard may not be directly made by the tablet manufacturer but is endorsed by it. And yes I like Windows 8 OS and dont mind the lack of apps but rumours of pricing made me get a 'Droid phone instead.

HP and many other hardware companies are good example of why we have to always complain about Windows. But time will teach them that they may be able to keep cheating Windows OS, but hey may not succeed to keep cheating consumers. And for consumers, all they would need to know id what is the line between laptop and tablet

This should be 650 at the absolute max, especially when us price is $849 (excluding taxes)...
