We cracked open the Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo M9410 this morning and almost forgot what year we were in. You might not be able to tell from the picture, but this 14.1-inch laptop looks so damned old-school, it should come with a free subscription to Friends Reunited.
It's a 2.3kg unit which enjoys none of the design flourishes that adorn modern laptops. It's boxy like old Volvos and the grey-ish lettering on the keyboard makes it reminiscent of an electronic typewriter. It has both a trackpad and a pointing stick 'nipple', and there's a monochrome LCD info strip above the keyboard -- like on a calculator. Ads for the M941 will reportedly be soundtracked by Eagle-Eye Cherry.
It's just as well the components are well up to date. Inside there's a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600, 3GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive with ShockSensor and a DVD-rewriter drive. Plus it comes with both Windows Vista and XP, thanks to Fujitsu Siemens' TwinLoad system.
Where the Esprimo M9410 excels is the fact you can use it just about anywhere. The 1,280x800-pixel screen has a matte finish, so when you're outdoors you don't have to battle with your own reflection. Plus it packs built-in 3G -- just insert your 3G SIM card under the battery and Bob's your Web-surfing uncle.
You get all this for £839, which isn't too bad. And look at it this way -- at least nobody will rob you on the train. Unless they're some kind of violent antique-dealing weirdo. Expect a full review soon. -Rory Reid
