Chromebooks connect to Three as Google announces UK network partner

Mobile operator Three will be Google's official Chromebook 3G connectivity partner in the UK, with the first wave of Chromebooks from Samsung and Acer due out in June.

Three is being particularly secretive about exactly what being Google's bedfellow is all about. Thankfully, Google has laid things out a little more clearly.

Each 3G-capable Chromebook will come with a SIM card that includes 3GB of free data that must be used within three months before it expires. After that, users can top up with a 500MB day pass for £2.99 (any unused data is wiped out at the end of the day) or 30-day plans -- 1GB for £10, 3GB for £15 or 7GB for £25.

That's not as generous as many of Three's mobile and tablet offers, but it still seems like a pretty good deal. We're not sure why mobile operators are so scared of people chomping through vast amounts of data on laptops as compared to tablets and smart phones. Until 4G arrives in style, Web surfing away from Wi-Fi can be painfully slow.

Although the word "exclusive" is not mentioned in the press release, that's effectively what it is. We have no inkling of when other network operators will be allowed to join the party, if at all.

It has to be said, the network has been doing pretty well for itself recently, pushing the HTC Flyer and the Nokia X7 and selling off huge bundles of data. There's one company paying no attention to Friday 13th fear.

That's great news, Three's 3G coverage is head and shoulders above others and they are improving it all the time. I think I might buy a 3G chromebook when they come out in June. It'll be awesome

The rates these companies charge for their connectivity is *absolute theft*. I will never buy into that. The Wi-Fi version looks interesting though, but again, the price is *way* too high for what it is, they must think we're stupid to pay that on it's release.

Agree with RobertB123 - can't believe Google would launch the Chromebook in partnership with the Second Worst UK mobile provider. I see hungry days ahead ...
