BBM still missing from BlackBerry PlayBook, after 2.0 update

What a week for BlackBerry. First news comes that the PlayBook 2.0 OS update is delayed. Then that BBM will have to wait until another update. And then word reaches us RIM is being sued over the name BBX, for its upcoming mobile and tablet software.

And all this follows its three-day global outage that left customers stranded with no BBM, internet, or email. So tell us, now will you be buying a BlackBerry?

Apparently RIM wants PlayBook OS 2.0 not to disappoint, hence the delay. A post on the official BlackBerry blog reads: "As much as we'd love to have it in your hands today, we've made the difficult decision to wait to launch BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 until we are confident we have fully met the expectations of our developers, enterprise customers and end-users."

BBM is being held back for a later update, with the post saying only, "We are committed to developing a seamless BBM solution that fully delivers on the powerful, push based messaging capabilities recognized today by BlackBerry users around the world and we're still working on it."

In other words, it's taking longer than we thought.

BBM 2.0 was demoed at BlackBerry's DevCon 2011 event last week. Still, at least its BBX tablet- and smartphone-friendly OS is coming along ok. You know, the one that lets you run Android apps on a BlackBerry PlayBook? Everything's fine with that, right?

Oh, well it seems there are a few niggles in that area as well. Namely that RIM is being sued by a software company alleging trademark infringement for the name, reports the Los Angeles Times. Albuquerque-based software company Basis International claims it has used BBx as shorthand for its Business Basic eXtended line of software development tools since 1985. (The names aren't exactly the same, as Basis International's uses a lower case x.)

Basis says it trademarked the BBx name in 1995. It's seeking an order barring RIM from using the BBX name, as well as damages.
