Asus W2V: The best of both worlds

The universe is filled with unanswered questions. Why, for instance, do people say "the alarm just went off" when in reality it just went on? What was Captain Hook's name before the accident? Why is the word 'number' abbreviated to 'no' if there's no 'o' in number?

The most perplexing of all questions though, surely has to be "what type of laptop should I buy?" Powerful 17-inch laptops offer plenty of grunt, but they're big and heavy. Small, light, 12-inch laptops are highly portable, but when it comes to power they make Mr. Bean look like Arnie.

The solution could be the Asus W2V, which is large and fast, but not particularly heavy. It weighs in at a quite manageable 3.4kg, yet has a huge 17-inch screen and provides enough performance and features to satisfy most users.

It uses the fastest Pentium M CPU money can buy (2.13GHz), one entire gigabyte of random access memory, and the plucky ATI Radeon X700 graphics card -- which is fast enough to run Half-Life 2, Doom 3 and Tetris. At the same time. Probably.

The best thing about the W2V is probably its screen, which runs at 1,680x1,050 pixels and is so luscious to look at you'll want to lick it. The laptop also has a funky slot-loading DVD rewriter.

It'll set you back a cool £1,599. Watch for a full review shortly. -RR
