Far removed from the low-power single core chips of early tablets, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime packs a whopping quad-core processor running at a nippy 1.3GHz. It should chomp through the most demanding of tasks with a slobbering snarl and a look that says "come at me, bro".
There's even a fifth core in there, running at lower power, which it'll switch to for less demanding work. That should hopefully mean its battery power can be used more efficiently.
The Transformer Prime is the son of the original Eee Pad Transformer, so like its proud dad it's still a tablet that becomes a netbook when it docks with the keyboard add-on. The Prime will also be running the latest version of Android's unified mobile and tablet operating system, named Ice Cream Sandwich -- or at least it will after an update (due before it reaches the UK).
The screen on the Prime has a resolution of 1,280x800 pixels, which should make web browsing a pleasing experience. It's covered by hardened Gorilla Glass too, so you don't need to worry too much about accidentaly leaning on it. There's an 8-megapixel snapper on the back with a 1.2-megapixel video calling camera on the front.
Due here in January and costing £499, including the keyboard, we're really very excited about the Transformer Prime and can't wait to get our hands all over its sleek body and benchmark the brains out of its hefty processor.

This is a fantastic tablet! I will definitely upgrade from my current transformer, altough I wait for the 3G version.
Before that I try to win it on its forum: transformerprime.info

January ?
Most other sites claim it will probably be launched in december. Would make much more sense to launch it before christmas.
it seems quite unfair that it is 499$ in US and 499£ in UK .... even though the £ is weak it is still not on level with the $.

re: anonymous
including the dock it costs $648 if you convert that to £ it comes to roughly £420. you then have to add VAT which is now 20% (the US doesn't include sales tax in their asking price). After VAT it comes to £500 ish.
so we are paying asus the same amout as the US are

Excellent review! I know nothing about Android and have this question with the Prime. If I had the Prime and keyboard dock would it be possible to plug in an external 2.5 disk, mount it (whatever works, ntfs, fat32, ext4, etc) and copy files from the SD card to the external disk? I use a Asus 1015PN now to do this and even though it works and is a great little computer if the Prime did this I would move over to Android.

I know it's probably a redundant question but do you think I can connect my floppy disk drive via the USB port? I have some valuable Word 97 files that I would like to be able to edit. I don't trust USB sticks because they're too small and easy to lose.
