In what is possibly the funniest technology story ever, a judge has ordered that Apple must publicly apologise to Samsung -- and I can exclusively reveal what that apology will look like.
British Judge Colin Birss -- who is rapidly becoming my favourite person ever -- has ordered Apple to post newspaper adverts both apologising to Samsung and admitting that the Korean company did not copy the iPad at all. The apology must stay on Apple's website for the next six months.
Fine, so maybe we created the image above ourselves, but we can't wait to see what Apple actually comes up with. The adverts are designed to undo any damage to Samsung's reputation after Apple accused the Korean manufacturer of "slavishly copying" the design and even the packaging of the iPad.
Ruling on the case, Judge Birss decided that Samsung did not copy the iPad -- but in the same breath wiped the smile off Samsung's face by asserting that Samsung kit lacks Apple's "understated and extreme simplicity", hilariously adding Samsung is "not as cool."
And Judge Birss has wiped any trace of a smirk from Apple's collective face with today's unusual order. Sure, it's a bit daft to give a monolithic corporation human emotions, but it's hard to picture any company that takes itself as seriously as Apple. Anyone who believes Apple is excessively litigious will no doubt see this as delicious hubris, or at least irresistibly funny.
In another US case, a judge ruled that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 used similar ideas to the iPad, but Apple had no right to patent those ideas in the first place because they're too obvious. Patent disputes continue between the two companies in courtrooms around the world.
Should Apple apologise? Who's come out best from the patent squabble? And what should Apple say? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

Apple should apologise to us all for being such smug, self-agrandising, patronising global bullies. Schmucks.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:16
LOOL apple finally got what they deserve, there stupid lawsuits are stopping technology from advancing.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:18
i agree with boristhepie i love apple products there very user-friendly BUT ! BUT ! BUT ! there massively over priced products and not to mention money grabbing vampires apple in particular are several years ahead of the general population . . . . . did you know the iPad was designed and even had a pro to type in 2002 . . . . . way before the first iPhone was released!!!! they keep the same product on the market as long as possible to get as much money as they can !!
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:18
I suppose Apple should count themselves lucky they didn't have to print it on the boxes of their products too.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:20
hahahaha that would be brilliant
Nathan Explosion 19 July, 2012 13:21
Apple got absolutely everything they deserved. They have been holding technology back and passing their inferior and overpriced products via the media as the best thing since sliced bread for FAR too long.
Everyone with a brain knows that there are better and cheaper tablets than the iPad, and that anyone that's got an iPad is because
a) they are already locked in and have no choice
b) too lazy to investigate anything else
c) too stupid to investigate anything else.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:21
Dumbest thing ever!
Samsung blatently copies apple products, just look at all their designs pre iphone. anyone that disagees needs glasses.
I understand samsung want to complete but copying instead of innovating is just wrong, when Microsoft kicked apples asses for years did apple copy them? NO
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:25
http://www.macworld.co.uk/ipad-iphone/news/?newsid=3370905&pagtype=allchandate enjoy guys have a read of this ....... i wasn't joking !!
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:25
i hope they really do this on their own homepage
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:26
Personally I think that apple have a brilliant thing going due to the fact of their products but have no idea how iritating their little bugs are. If it shows that the samsung products don't have as many bugs I may actually switch sides!
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:33
i seriously hope Apple will go down... the worst thing ever happened to humans is Apple
Flor Bogs 19 July, 2012 13:38
After such an embarrassing turn of events, Apple should not allow their products to be sold in the UK. Apple doesn't need the UK market. They shouldn't give UK the pleasure of having access to Apple products. Apple will continue dominating mobile technology.
As an example of Apple's greatness and innovation, look no farther than the New iPad. It has 4G LTE, which is revolutionary, and then people want to claim that Apple is playing catch-up with other technology companies. Look also at the iPhone 4S. It has super-fast 3G, which is much faster than Edge. It's amazing and incredible. With innovations such as these, it's no wonder why technology companies hate Apple and want to copy them.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:41
I don't get it - Samsung tablets are more expensive than iPads, you can throw it in a bin after 12 months tops because new updates won't be available, every new gen is getting closer to Apple's design and if it wasn't for the logo at the front you would have thought its an iPad....
So all the Apple haters accept this and still go for an alternative. is it so they can say - oh yeah, it's comparable to an iPad?
Just FYI, Microsoft is the one reaping all the benefits of Android sales - do some digging and see for yourself. Hmm, Apple or Microsoft - who do you hate more? Must be a hard one...
:)
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:47
This is too good to be true. lol
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:47
I'm with the comments except the one that saids"Dumbest thing ever". I bet that comment is from Apple.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:49
when the first iphone was released, it was nothing but a sum of different technologies invented by other makes, only differently aranged. i remember my wife gloating over her new iphone, and asking to borrow my phone every single time she wanted to take a photo! well, even she gave up and got herself a galaxy s2. all this woudln't be an issue was it not for apple's blatant lies about their superiority and originality... i see apple going the same way as nokia, soon...
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:49
No I'm with the comments that says this is good
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:54
Wouldn't apples apology be more iApologise ????
anonymous 19 July, 2012 13:57
@ Flor Bogs your kidding us, Samsung are not trying to copy it. Anyway, Apple is not a complete electronics company, they only produce iphone, ipad, imac and one more thing i don't know. And also, did u think twice. Samsung Galaxy S III is currently dominating the mobile technology, its market share is the highest and there more better. Search Wikipedia.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:01
As an anti-apple guy (the company, NOT the products - they are nice), I fine this extremely hilarious.
Having said that, I sincerely hope this is the start of the bringing these stupid court cases to an end.
Build the products, the public will buy what they like best. Let them decide. Trying to increase market share by kiling off competition is not the way to do it. Competition spurs on innovation.
Bring on he next gen products !!!!
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:02
Lol, that is genuinly awesome, id buy all apples products if that appeared on their home page
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:02
Apple are trying to monpolise at every cost..
I love their products but hate their business strategies within the market sector and therefore, will not spend my money on them.
Plus now there is little value for money i.e Intel powered Mac's are more than double the price of a windows PC for the SAME SPEC!
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:05
Why sites like CNET lick Apple's a** so much is still not clear.
tuxtester 19 July, 2012 14:08
If Apple do this I reckon it will bring their web server down because of all the hits it'll get :-)
Samsung should also post a 'thank you' on their own web site, to Apple for all of the publicity they've received as a result of Apple's deluded behaviour.
Flor Bogs 19 July, 2012 14:09
Competition? Apple has no competition and are not worried about the Samsung Galaxy S3. If they were, they'd be quick to release the iPhone 5, but that isn't the case. iPhone has 3G, a dual-core processor, an App Store with thousands of free apps, and a 3.5 inch screen. No one can beat that. Apple will announce and release the iPhone 5 when THEY are ready.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:11
'LOOL apple finally got what they deserve, there stupid lawsuits are stopping technology from advancing.'
You have no clue what you're talking about.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:12
If i would create a technology company and find my company revolutionary then I bet Apple will do what they did to Samsung to me. And also if its revolutionary, I'll sell it to Samsung for 10 million dollars.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:16
Need not . For, Apple fight for what it belives and it is for Samsung to disprove it
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:16
An Apology:
Dear Samsung. We at Apple are really, really sorry we accused you of plagiarism. Hands up... Our bad... We got it wrong. The judge was absolutely right in her assessment when she said that your tablet simply wasn't as cool as ours. And there you have it, Samsung... you just can't copy that indefinable quality that makes something different from anything that's gone before... That special something that makes it cool... It's what's at the core of Apple (excuse the pun). Yep, Samsung, you can't copy soul.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:21
Michael Okuda had the original idea anyway in Star Trek.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:35
Just to add one thing to Flor Bogs comment. S3 has Quad Core processor and true 4G LTE not apples fake 4G ie. super fast 3G.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:37
Apples are for eating, period!
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:39
BWAHAHAHA... AHAHAHA... ... AHAAAAAA! Sorry, sorry, I'm fine now. This is just wonderful, Colin Birss is truly a legend among men - I only hope he can rule over every dumb patent suit that gets brought by litigious jokers like Apple who seek to abuse the patent process to stifle competition and line their pockets. Many of the patents under dispute should never have been granted in the first place but thank God Judge Birss is here to right the wrongs of simpleton patent clerks - and to stick the boot in a bit for good measure. Any company so arrogant as to apply for patent protection on "a black rectangle" or "moving your finger from left to right" deserve nothing less than utter contempt from the legal system and hopefully this will send a clear message to the patent trolls that they should think twice before wasting our court's time with their spurious suits. Now we just need to fix the patent system that led to this abuse in the first place - Judge Birss, have you got a spare minute?
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:40
Flor Bogs - obviously an apple employee
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:40
My brother and his whole family have Mapple products, darn they are pants!
Well, one day he may just return from the Dark Side and realise what a muppet he has been!
Whenever he calls me up about a technical issue on his Mapple, I can honestly and gleefully say I don't give a stuff! He bought them silly toys, now suffer!
anonymous 19 July, 2012 14:51
Get a 'Raspberry Pi'. Much more fun and educates in the basics of computing, and more. Brings back memories of programming my zx spectrum, but is obviously capable of a lot more :) It might just inspire the next generation of product/technology designers!
anonymous 19 July, 2012 15:16
Claims of "originality" by Apple go out the window when you watch old episodes of Star Trek TNG and they're all using...tablets! Hmmmm, do Apple pay the producers of Star Trek a fee?
YES the design is VERY similar between the iPad and the Samsung, but just how many ways are there to vary the appearance of a large touchscreen with a really slim border?
How much cheaper would iProducts be without the expensive lawsuits, or how much better if the money was invested in more R&D?
anonymous 19 July, 2012 15:43
The apology will go something like this:
"Apple is pleased to apologise to Samsung for suggesting that the Samsung product is a copy of the Apple product. It will be obvious to anyone who cares to compare the two items that the Samsung one is a vastly inferior product.....blah blah blah"
Whether you are a "fan" of apple or not you must give then credit for changing the whole design of electronic toys. Before Apple you had the designs that looked a bit like a sardine can with knobs on each of the six sides (American) or a large bar of orange soap (Japanese) then along came Apple.
This however does not give Apple the right to rip off punters with excessive prices and unfairly restricting them to only Apple supplied add ons. Nearly every toaster looks the same, most televisions look the same so why not Tablets?.
Apple is, whether it knows it or not annoying a large part of the buying public with these silly law suits designed purely to frustrate other manufacturers and especially Google.
I like Apple design, dislike the price and the restrictions and the fact that they want to dictate what I can do with MY gear, that's why I will always choose Android, Linux and other unrestricted gear.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 15:51
i think Apple are getting what they deserve, I own an ipad and iphone and love them but Apple think they can control the world. They need a kick up the backside.
As for Samsung, they make great products but lets face it, they do copy a bit lol. Just look at how apple like the phone boxes are and look at the website and teh way theyhave started to advertis their products. its very Apple/
Flor Bogs 19 July, 2012 16:02
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is a direct ripoff of the iPhone. It has a touchscreen, dual-core processor, and a home button - things that the iPhone had first. People need to open their eyes and see that Apple is innovating while everyone is copying. Android is able to copy/paste text, obviously a feature stolen from Apple when they introduced the iPhone 3GS.
We will go thermonuclear on Android and will spend all of the money we have in the bank to correct the wrongdoings of Apple's competitors.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 16:07
what I think is that Apple or samsung should look for something different so as to bring true competition in the market..Neither of them should look to its fellow's technology we need revolution...its shawn Apple Man
anonymous 19 July, 2012 16:11
Bad ruling for consumers, slows down innovation and halts the tech from progressing.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 16:15
HAHA i dont know which i find funnier... the hilarious news that apple have to publicly apologise or the comments left by @Flor Bogs... dude you are such a d1ckhead! my favourite quote... "iPhone has 3G, a dual-core processor, an App Store with thousands of free apps, and a 3.5 inch screen. No one can beat that." ... LOL what?!?! youre right, what other phones on the market today have 3G, dual cores app stores and 3.5inch screens! AHEM HTC One X > QUAD core processor, Google Play, 4.7 inch screen.... Samsung Galaxy S3.. 4.7inch screen, quad core google play, 4.7 inch screen...Need i continue @flor bogs??? I think if you did your homework you would see that by your standards EVERYONE is beating the iPhone....
Some people are just so ignorant!
(PS am not a fandroid, i just object to mindless, pointless and unjustified idiots like @Flor Bogs)
anonymous 19 July, 2012 16:17
Or they could say:
Samsung have not coppied Apple, all Samsungs products are originated by Samsung. A UK Judge has stated on record that Samsung products are not as cool to be a copy of our hip, cool Apple products.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 16:24
"Android is able to copy/paste text, obviously a feature stolen from Apple when they introduced the iPhone 3GS."
Just like Apple stole it from Windows/Linux? Apple dont innovate, they steal other peoples ideas and pass them off as their own. Apple are a fail company who try to bully others instead of making better products. Lets remember that they're SO fail that Microsoft had to give them money to stop them going under.
Flor Bogs 19 July, 2012 16:25
"(PS am not a fandroid, i just object to mindless, pointless and unjustified idiots like @Flor Bogs)"
You don't understand the beauty that is Apple because you are brainwashed. Everything on the iPhone is revolutionary and amazing. Look at the home screen. It's the same home screen since 2007 and still revolutionary 5 years later. Android has widgets and live wallpapers, but Apple has a simple approach which you cannot understand. Did you ever see the revolutionary notification system introduced on iOS5? Android stole that from us too.
Samsung should be kissing our feet. We buy so many components from them in order to build the iPhone. I cannot comprehend why Samsung cannot play nice and just maintain a strong business relationship with Apple free of litigation nonsense and patent suits. Samsung wants to sue us all over the world and that's just a shame. We are just trying to innovate and defend our intellectual property. We may have lost this battle, but in the name of Steve Jobs we will win this war.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 16:33
Contrary to what most of you unthinking lunkheads think Apple isn't trying to "monopolize" but protect their designs and inventions as any company would. Notice Apple is NOT going after Microsoft who's designs are not slavishly copying Apples. All Apple want is differentiation in the market place and that means others should not copy their hard work and innovations by trying to confuse consumers into thinking similar looking devices must be equals. Shamstung is disingenuous to the max as they KNOW they copied Apple's lead but are playing it like Martin Short's Nathan Thurm character hoping to skate by. Thanks to judges making stupid decisions like this one.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 16:39
Flor Bogs you will find Samsung S3 has quad core @ 1.4 Ghz to apple iphone 800 Mhz dual
so basically 1 core of s3 is nearly iphone processing power not so hi tech in 2004 NEC had a 3g phone in uk it took apple quite a long time to play catch up a home button that's revolutionary again NEC had it in 2004 Note philips have a phone called fluid thats cool
Flor Bogs 19 July, 2012 16:46
You fandroids think that it's all about having the best specs. It's all about software. Apple's software is superior to Android. Apple gives so much flexibility on the iPhone that it's ridiculous. Meanwhile, Android users need to root their devices in order to do things with them. Sure, I can jailbreak my iPhone, but there's no need to because I already have all the features I need and all the features that Steve Jobs wants us all to have.
It's all about hardware and Apple has the best hardware. Apple is so good that their 800 MHz will still be faster than an Android's 1.5GHz. Quality over quantity. Apple offers better Hz quality than Android.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 16:57
There is no doubt that samsung design is very similar to the apple products but there is no other design that other companies can adopt to make it better then apple. the full touch screen is the best asset. Blackberry have tried to have buttons but now are ending up with touchscreen devices.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 16:59
@For Bogs
"Apple gives so much flexibility on the iPhone that it's ridiculous."
I remember when my friend and I were bluetoothing files over our friend and his iPhone. And I just love when I can plug my phone into ANY computer and use it as a hard drive (with my 55 GB HTC Amaze). Can your phone do that ?
Flor Bogs 19 July, 2012 17:14
HTC Amaze!? lol
Having an iPhone has completely changed my life. People look at me with respect now. I'm part of the "iPhone crowd" and love it. When you hold a Samsung or HTC phone, it doesn't get you noticed, but when you hold up an iPhone, heads begin to turn. You need to see the looks I get from people when I use my iPad in public. People want to be me at that moment and know what it's like to experience technology at it's finest.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 17:37
to Flor Bogs you will find S3 is more powerful than Iphone look at benchmarks you are so up your own As* and clearly know nothing about tech why is it you need itunes just to sync a song why not use the phone as mass storage sony xperia has a better screen res to iphone FACT the sale stats will prove which is the better OS oh sorry it is not IOS But Android smoke that one
anonymous 19 July, 2012 17:43
@For Bogs If you even begin to say that Apple has revolutionized the notifications on a smart phone you are just dead wrong. In fact that has been the pillar of the android platform since the beginning! Apple finally released notifications (which in light of their own practices should be sued for) after they undoubtedly stole the idea from Android. The future holds these headlines: "Apple, the hardware giant struggles to become the information company needed to create a better user experience." While Google just needs to streamline some design and manufacturing and use there already immense amount of data they have to make my life better!
anonymous 19 July, 2012 17:45
I think Flor is a hardcore Android fan. Judging from her comments, she definitely knows her stuff. Flor seems like a "cult of Apple" fanatic to the 100th power, but is wording things in such a manner that she is making true apple fanboys look like idiots for supporting Apple's overrated and overpriced products.
And if Flor is in fact serious, then we have seen the worst Apple fanboy in the history of the internet.

"that they're SO fail that Microsoft had to give them money to stop them going under."
Please get your facts straight. MSFT *BOUGHT* 150M in shares from Apple, at somewhere around $20 a share. They sold it a year later! If they still held it it would probably be worth more than MSFT as the shares split twice and ran to over $600.
Why did they buy them you ask? Two reasons. One, MSFT were under DOJ investigation and were eventually convicted of being a preditory monopoly (what a genius court to figure that out) but were not the slightest bit punished in the US. Not even a slap on the proverbial wrist.
Secondly, MSFT were caught stealing Quicktime code from Canyon Software (who Apple had contracted with to provide a Windows version). MSFT felt it would be just hunky dory to PASTE it right into WIndows Media. No kidding, look it up. Not many references left to it, but look up Apple computer vs San Francisco Canyon, if you don't believe me.
What is worse is that MSFT also threatned Apple repeatedly over this, as usual that they would stop development of Office.
Please stick to facts and quit repeating ridiculous FUD which is only believed by knuckle draggers who can barely read and are content to repeat MSFT-branded (and one of their few inventions, BTW) FUD.

Judge Birss has ruled that Samsung did not slavishly copy the design of the iPad. So if you want all of the beauty, power, excitement and coolness of an iPad, get an iPad.
anonymous 19 July, 2012 21:39
Microsoft vs Apple. Google vs Apple. Samsung vs Apple. It's not surprising that Apple reacts the way it does – aggressively defending its corner when everybody wants a piece of it.
And why do they all want their pound of flesh? Simple. It's human nature to want to compete with, and defeat the very best. And regardless of which side of the fence you're on, anyone with half a brain would realize that without an Apple Corp. in the world, we would simply not be where we are today with our iPhones, Galaxies, Androids et al.
Apple made us desire this technology because they made it so damn sexy. At first, nobody gave Apple a chance stating consumers wouldn't get it, and that it would be too expensive. Only Apple pro users would buy this stuff, and there's only a few of those left still loyal to the brand. What the heck would you do with one of these crazy devices anyway? Apple proved their detractors wrong. So wrong, in fact, that even during the hardest economic times ever, Apple were still able to create the need for this technology – and they continued growing market share and amassing huge profit while others were wilting under the heat. All this because, as the UK judge so wittily put it. Apple is cool. No kidding!
Look. Marconi didn't invent the vacuum tube, nor a stack of other components, that when put together, made his visionary invention, the radio. In the same way, Apple have been bloody clever with their integration of hardware and software and with their strategy to invest in the technology that would fit with their vision. And boy, what an amazing vision. And we're benefiting from Apple's courage and conviction to their core values right now – not in xx years down the line. Could you imagine a world where everything was still square, plastic and beige? If it would have been left to the accountants to drive technological innovation, it would have been.
Apple's DNA is to innovate – that takes vision and the courage of your convictions. And those attributes are fundamentally what many of the would-be-Apples sadly lack. Civilization will remember Apple. And it'll remember Microsoft and Google too. But Samsung? Samsung who?

OPEN LETTER FROM SAMSUNG (you wish)
And if someone could channel William Tell back from the dead so he can observe this history lesson before passing his expert judgement on 'the Apple'...
Dear APPLE
and Rich Trenholm Who WROTE THIS ARTICLE
and any spectators.
Unix was free and open to massive FREE developments - and Apple hijacked it.
Apple stole it's original GUI from Xerox PARC.
Apple sued Microsoft for nicking the GUI off of them.
Xerox sued Apple on the same grounds.
Apple 'PERMANENTLY BORROWED' its CPU from a much cheaper Intel PC.
Apple stole CUPS Unix printing software from OPEN SOURCE (yet MORE hard work for them) but it doesn't have to abide by its open-source license terms ( refer back to the OS).
Apple then Hacks its OS to render it useless to MILLIONS of 'unsupported' Mac OWNERS (Who paid through the nose for it in the first place.... LIKE ME!)
Apple then tries to sue Samsung for making something that has more user definable options with a LINUX system on it - And - making Apple cut their price.
Apple B@#$%X
If a Mac cost the same as a LEGALLY LICENSED AND VANILLA KERNEL'd Top line Hack' - Which would screw the Apple to a table and knock seven barrels of UNIX out of it,
and have easily NOT EXTORTIONATELY PRICED replaceable parts (Like NOT when it is shaped like a gold fish bowl and/or when the power supply must be soldered to the motherboard) -
And then NOT re-engineer obsolescence in older machines buy altering significant pieces of code from the OS, and requiring UNPAID MAC DEVELOPERS (A Mac developer account costs $99 per year BTW) To FIX THE SAME SYSTEM so it will run ON A MAC! Like a 2006 Intel GMA 950 GPU, 2GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, and just 1GB of RAM (And running quite happily reports suggest - with FULL ACCELERATION!) and still to mention OTHER unsupported Macs...
And Er.. Embarrassingly - Reports of 2ghz 3gb 120gb SSD RUGGED - YES - RUGGED TOUGH BOOK ($500 for an almost indestructible machine plus LEGAL LICENCE) running everything but the touch panel!
$2000 says you cant drop YOUR Mac down the stairs into a bath of water and reverse over it in your car without killing it.
I ask - What are WE paying for?
You pay Apple to -
Make stuff out of white shiny plastic
Make odd shaped white boxes,
install the OS
Put the magnetic connectors on our laptop power supplies (which you can DIY for 5 bucks)?
Sell more Ipods/phones
Sue everybody they can - win or lose -and attempt to completely monopolise the market
Did they give you a Quad core 8gb ram 250gb SSD 1gb graphics a 42 inch plasma panel for $1500?
NOO no no... They don't want to give you that!
You have to hack one out of 'not freebay' for $700 including the second hand screen + Licence and shipping. How unimpressive???? MMMM....
At that price I think my dual core 'Power PC' is buggered.... And so is APPLE.
Off course after all that rant, I cannot say or suggest that it is a simple task to DIY a Hack,
but it can be with the correct hardware!
And if you don't know how to DIY an Apple Hack or don't want to know, or just plain could never afford it - you could always just pick a machine from $50 quid upwards to whatever your budget is like, and easily install a fast Linux / Unix OS, for free, with free software suites and free support!

"Apple have been holding technology back ..."
What planet are you from? Do you remember phones before the iPhone, or tablets prior to the iPad? If these things are so obvious, then why was there an explosion of products only after Apple released their products?
Once again, Apple does the R&D, creates the market and the rest follow with incremental changes ...
"Look we added a USB port", "Ours has a stylus"
Such innovation.

"Your joking, right? Apple had copy/paste in 1984."
And they stole it from Xerox. Apple likes to steal ideas, their customers are big enough suckers to think that Apple thought it up too.

I think Flor Blogs is either deluded, being sarcastic, or maybe just a bit "special"
If its the latter, it would justify my opinion of the average iPhone4 owner
The fact he mentioned brainwashed in his post REALLY made me laugh

What a load of bichin. Apple's design is premium and looks cool. the handset is overpriced for the technology it offers. Because they only bring out 1 iPhone a year their technology soon becomes outdated by the competition. There is no perfect mobile out there. If they were perfect then none of us would have to upgrade or anything. They all try and push new technology on us making us feel inadequate with our old phones. Just get a life people and dont fall for all the rubbish. Just get a phone that suits you and stop trying to beat your neighbour. Goodbye geeks!
anonymous 20 July, 2012 11:33
I dun get.
I didn't know (I am 15), that in a civil action the judge could punish the accusing party for accusing. Or so it would seem..
I suppose brand damages but what damages have Samsung had from Apple's suing?
Apple was the one who took Samsung to court didn't they? Why are they receiving punishment?

You idiot. No one with the time could even begin to respond to your comment. Check your sources, check yourself because you don't make sense.
Buying a chip off someone was stealing or borrowing when?
'Intel: I have a few million chips laying around would you like to borrow them?
Apple: Sure.
Intel: Make sure you give them back though!'

What do you expect happen?
All operating systems and computers become redundant.

To the 15 year old that does not understand why Apple has to apologize:
Imagine you are being accused of stealing from your local grocer. He comes to your school and during an assembly of all the students he announces to everyone that you are a thief and have stolen from him.
Months later, in a quiet courtroom, a judge says you are not guilty of stealing from him and you are allowed to go on your way. Has the person who accused you of stealing caused you any damage? What do your classmates think of you now? If you go back to school and tell them one by one that you were found innocent, would they believe you? Has your reputation been damaged?
Now imagine the judge ordered the grocer to go to your school, call for an assembly of all the students, and announce to everyone that he made a mistake and you are innocent. You did not steal anything and you are not a thief, and he is very sorry for saying you were.
That is what Apple has to do because they damaged Samsung's reputation by publicly accusing them of something they did not do.
anonymous 20 July, 2012 12:22
I like Apple products but they are too expensive. They should not be blocking the other vendors trying to come into market with less expensive competitive products. Just imagine how much would be the Apple products if they are manufactured in US and not in China.
anonymous 20 July, 2012 12:41
I hate Apple but NO one can deny that Samsung is the biggest thief, the whole company is based on copying other not only Apple but even before the iPhone they were always stealing from Lg & Sony.. I bet that judge was bribed by Samsung as usual..
Gus Van der Walt 20 July, 2012 12:43
What I find sad is that Apple has been copied. Look at the Asus table (can't remember the name now) has the exact same styling features. Samsung did copy Apple as well. Yes Apple might be slightly over protective but they are correct.
Half the comments here are about how sucky Apple is. Look at the stats, it takes the entire android product range to compete with just the iPhone and just the iPad. Who is better?
Samsung should ditch android entirely and move over to Microsoft and then they will be better off.
Apple make beautiful devices and the rest of the industry try (and fail) to copy that.
trick202 20 July, 2012 12:47
I hope when they apologise, they do it on a backdrop of the 3gs next to the Galaxy S.
That would be nice.

Flor Blog, you are a genius. I was fooled until the post about the copy and paste in Android being ripped off from Apple. What's most worrying are all the Anonymous users saying "but Apple ripped it off too" rather than "no, Android had it before iOS" LOL...
brutalexcess 20 July, 2012 14:50
What's with the fighting about who is better than who?
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, stop shoving it down each others throats as if we're going to change it. Let's face it, regardless of the situation between companies, they are just trying to make products for peoples entertainment. True, some people can be idiots and have completely no common sense and look for anything to get money (my reason for hating paparazzi's, among other things our society in general), but regardless I am happy with my iPhone.
davelidstone 20 July, 2012 14:50
The design of Pad like devices pre-date Apple devices by several years. In 1989 we were testing a "GRiDPad" device for In-Car data logging on existing Analogue mobile phone network. The GridPad was a Touchscreen Tablet manufactured by Samsung for GRiD Systems Corporation. It was running IBM Dos.
It was used by several entities including the US Army.
For those interested check the Wiki entry for GRiDPad.
anonymous 20 July, 2012 15:19
Flor Bogs, well played. I haven't seen a successful troll like that in a while.
People want both hardware and software. I have clients who like the bigger screens of Android, who like not being tied down to iTunes to do everything, and I even have one client who is getting a Motorola (The horror!) because it has a physical keyboard instead of a touch screen.
Yes, I will cede to Apple that they have good designs and ideas, but their major ability is to take concepts that are already out in the world, and make them as flashy and attractive as possible. I know my parents were using the HTC Apache, from back in 2005, which was able to do everything the iPhone did and more, a good two years before it came out.
Honestly, my biggest complaint with the iPhone is how tiny it is. My old HTC Touch Pro 2 is bigger than it is, and that has a slide-out keyboard!
anonymous 20 July, 2012 15:20
Gawd, that took people an awful lot of posts to get that Flor Bogs was just posing..
anonymous 20 July, 2012 15:35
Bottom line: you can argue that Samsung copied the design aesthetic of the iPad but Apple rightly lost this legal action because they had no valid right to patent it in the first place. Patents are not designed to protect "look and feel", they are designed to protect actual intellectual property. Patentability requirements in the UK and most other countries explicitly state that an invention must be "sufficiently inventive" to be applicable. Making something black and rectangular is not "sufficiently inventive" by any reasonable standard.
Obvious example: if Apple designed a television that was black and rectangular with a single on/off button on the front, should they be able to patent the concept of "black rectangular televisions with an on/off button on the front"? Of course not, because they haven't "invented" anything, they've simply styled a product in a distinctive but entirely non-unique way. There's nothing there that warrants a patent, which is lucky else your TV would have cost twice as much as it's actually worth.
Samsung did copy Apple's design aesthetic but since it was never legally patentable it's only right that Apple lost their case. And since Samsung have been vindicated, it's perfectly reasonable that Apple should publicly retract their erroneous statements of wrongdoing. It's that simple.
anonymous 20 July, 2012 15:54
I think the author should apologize for the incorrect usage of the word "hubris". Hubris is defined as exaggerated pride or self-confidence. "Delicious irony" might be more appropriate.
anonymous 20 July, 2012 16:21
I'm not a fanboy of either side, but people who are saying android copies apple and apple copies android are both correct, android 4.0 has the same swiping home screen as apple, but apple copied the notification center from android. But I don't think it's right for apple to patent EVERYTHING on their devices and then sue other companies for coping the design. Most phones and tablets are the same, look at the droid razr, it has edge to edge screen which is pretty much standard these days, but apple believes it can call it its own. I'm surprised apple hasn'tbeen sued yet for monopolizing like microsoft was in the past
anonymous 20 July, 2012 16:23
All the talk of people/companies "stealing" ideas from one another just brings the old saying to mind, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." All successful companies have copied or mimicked something from a competitive company at some point or another, it helps keep the competition alive and if people like it, then why not use it or something similar to it? The patent system anymore is a joke, I'm surprised someone hasn't patented breathing or eating yet. I think Apple got what they deserved in this case, since it's essentially what they wanted to happen to Samsung.
I personally love Android, but iOS has it's place too. I own and use both platforms, they are both useful for different aspects. Straight out of the box, the iOS software is simpler to learn and use than Android is and usually does run more efficiently on similar hardware, out of the box. So for less tech savvy people or folks that just like simpler to use, it's for them. But you get into the jailbreaking/rooting aspect of things, and I'm sorry, but no Apple product can hold a candle to a similar Android-based product. There's just undeniably more innovation and creativity in the non-corporate Android developer community. You want to get the most out of your device, Android hands down. I just wish that cell providers would stop putting all their extra crap on Android before the sell it, that plays a major role in why they don't run as efficiently as iOS on similar hardware.
Let's just hope that Apple as well as every other company that uses patents as aggressively as Apple will learn something from the outcome of this. Innovation and creativity should be the focus over patents and stifling competitors. That's how the consumers want it to be, so you should listen to them.
sam7 20 July, 2012 16:33
I see that pro Apple CNet is stirring it up again for brainwashed apple fanatics and Samsung users. It is obvious that Samsung products are better value for the consumer, simply look at the specs. Go to any neutral tech review site and make the comparisons yourself !<br />
<br />
If the brainwashed apple users can see past their glazed dreamy eyes you cannot fail to agree!<br />
<br />
Why do you stay with a product that is near impossible to upgrade, At least Samsung provides Micro SD card slots woth it's phones and tablets allowing up to 32 Gb or 64 Gb of extra memory plus replaceable battery options.<br />
<br />
If you want to upgrade an Apple product you need to bin it !!!<br />
<br />
And now that Apple are bringing out a Ipad Mini, would you agree that they are copying the Samsung 7" Tablets?, it's the same logic right?<br />
<br />
Samsung are not copying, would you say that when the first motor car was built that all subsequent motor companies should not be allowed to build their version??<br />
<br />
Where does that leave the consumer who would have no choice but to buy from one manufacturer?, is that what Apple and Apple users want? MY God, you are a bunch of blinkered geeks. Join the rest of the human race will you?<br />
<br />
And that goes for CNet too, your reviewers are so blinkered and biased towards Apple it's embarrassing!<br />
<br />
Samsung are providing consumer choice and thank god for that. Otherwise we would all have Apple products.. OMG, I feel like I want to vomit at the thought.<br />
<br />
Sam :) xx

LOL. Apple ended up putting their foot in their mouth, serves them right for going on a suing spree. I want to say first of all i am no apple fanboy. I like apple's business model and all, but I kinda lost some respect for them when they went on this suing spree. Apple is now the biggest comany in the US now, isn't that enough? Why do you have to take out the competition when you are already be biggest game in town?
anonymous 20 July, 2012 17:08
Apple should apologise for creating lawsuits when their products don't sell because they're too damn expensive and stopping technology from advancing and trying to control every single other company out there.
Flor Bogs 20 July, 2012 18:00
My T-mobile Dash from 2006 does things that the iPhone 4S can't do. I can send/receive music and other files via bluetooth, something that Android has no problem doing, but Apple can't for control reasons. It has a microsd slot. I have NES, SNES, GB/GBC, and Genesis emulators on it and it plays with perfect framerate, except that SNES won't play if sound is enabled, but then again it only has a 200MHz processor.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and am more happy with it than any Apple product I've ever owned. I will get rid of my old iPhone before getting rid of my Dash because it's a nice phone that I hacked/modded like crazy. I like it when manufacturers encourage modding/tweaking because it can only make devices more fun. Apple's approach is to only allow the set features that they want allowed. Most iOS users don't know that they can do so much more if they gave Android a chance and stopped being iSheep.

if judges start making companies do this with making them put retractions on there websites will make companies think twice about the stupid patents claims . i cant this will piss off the company then any loss in a patent case
anonymous 22 July, 2012 02:21
Well done on the judge. Apple have been playing games to inhibit Samsungs market share and the whole thing stinks. I hope US judges are watching this. Apple I am not impressed - less litigation and more design as it stands you'll be copying android and Samsung for years to come.

Probably one of the most interesting tech battles in history seems to be unfolding. It is tribal (both), it is about open source (android) it is about control (apple), it is about dirty tricks (apple), it is about innovation (both), it is about restriction (apple), it is about functionality (android), it is about megalomania (jobs)

You know, to be perfectly honest, Apple and Samsung should do what Apple and Microsoft did over thirty years - Pretty much deadlock rivals, both pushing, both serving the world. I've experienced both worlds, and I'm only 17, but now that there's a new market in portable stuff rather than big, bulky machines, the best two producers should just do what they are best at, and maybe, yes, they may well decide to cooperate as Apple and Intel now cooperate. in 20 years, maybe even sooner, we could be looking at the future of computing technology.

And, in the apology letter, they should say "Samsung dreamed up everything up themselves. Especially the rubbish bits."
Apple FTW.
Samsung Sucks BTICH
anonymous 1 November, 2012 14:08
ha! serves them right. Apple has not come up with ONE thing that's not existed before in the world of mobile phones. sony/ nokia/ motorola/ ericsson/ panasonic/ blackberry/ etc etc have played a stellar role in defining the industry and all the products that we see now. apple came along and copied from everyone to come up with their hallowed product. good that people outside of USA have slammed the company for what it is indeed the case. sucks for apple though, the game is going to just like mac/ pc. all over again.
