Apple doesn't want iPad used in bed as iOS 4.2 ditches orientation lock

We're starting to think Steve Jobs doesn't want you watching your Apple iPad in bed. In typically concise emails to a fan, reported by 9to5Mac, Apple's polo-necked panjandrum confirmed the firmware update to iOS 4.2 changes the handy orientation lock switch into a mute button -- whether you like it or not.

The switch on the side locks the screen in place so when you turn the iPad on its side, what's on screen doesn't flip sideways too. It's handy for when you're lying down and you want to keep your fruit-flavoured slate in portrait or landscape mode. iOS 4.2, the new version of the iPad's operating system software, will see the switch silencing any sound emanating from the device, as on the iPhone.

Although it's a minor software tweak, it's kind of a big deal for many iPad users. The orientation lock was originally hailed as a great example of Apple's eye for detail, and flair for simple usability. Tablet PCs are inherently meant for use away from desks and flat surfaces, whether that means curled up on the sofa, lying in bed or passing around a group of friends, family or other worker drones. The lock is a quick and easy method of ensuring such unconventional usage doesn't see the screen crazily leaping about like the bridge of the Enterprise going through a spatial anomaly.

The iPad doesn't even need a mute button -- it's not a phone, and won't ever ring at an inopportune moment like when in the middle of the library, tiptoeing out of a stranger's house the morning after, or hiding behind a crate as terrorists plot and scheme just feet away. If you really need your iPad to hush for a moment, that's what volume keys, pause buttons and headphones were invented for.

The orientation lock still appears in the forthcoming firmware update to iOS 4.2, and will be accessed from the multitasking bar onscreen. That means if you're watching a film and decide to lie down, or you're passing an iPad around a group, you'll have to jump out of the app for a moment to lock the screen instead of thumbing a handy button.

On a passing note, this Craver has long pined for the iPhone's mute switch to control Wi-Fi. The iPhone's battery life is so shoddy we find ourselves turning Wi-Fi on and off regularly in a desperate attempt to eke out the last batteryjoules of batteryjuice, which requires frootling about in the settings. The ideal situation would be the option to choose the function we want the switch to fulfill, whether it's muting, locking the screen, toggling Wi-Fi, or something else.

It's a small thing, but the devil is in the details, and it doesn't help that this is another edict handed down by Apple and applied to your kit whether you like it or not. iOS 4.2 will be available in November and, on a brighter note, also brings multitasking, folders and a unified mail inbox to the iPad.

Are you tired of being bossed about by Apple? Which do you find more useful -- the orientation lock or the mute button? And if you had a choice, what would you want the switch to do?

"...you'll have to jump out of the app for a moment to lock the screen..."

I'm guessing the reporter here hasn't even used 4.2 themselves, am I right? You don't exit the app at all. A simple double-tap of the home button brings up the menu bar without exiting the app. Your app continues running.

Also, if you've even bothered to follow the development forum for this release, Apple will allow the user to configure the switch to be used for mute/orientation through the iPad settings.

Please do your research before spreading incorrect information.

Is this really such a big deal? Won't iOS 4.2 just bring orientation lock in the multi-tasking user interface like the other iOS 4 devices?

Perhaps the anonymous person above should leave their name if they are about to accuse Rich of not doing his homework. I've got an iPad and find it very handy to have the mute switch as orientation lock. If you want to mute it at the moment you just hold down on the volume button for a few seconds and it's done. Simple.

I'm not looking forward to having to double tap and swipe. I am in full agreement with Rich that having the option of what the mute button does would be a benefit.

Rich hasn't done his homework whatsoever, I agree with anonymous above. I own an ipad, and I can tell you I use the volume keys to turn the volume all the way down more than I lock screen... and taking 2 seconds to double press the home key just to lock the screen is not a big deal.. it is not like you keep switching back and forth all the time. Most likely you will find a comfortable position and choose the app that you wish to use, and then the position of the ipad you prefer.
I would prefer my iPad to be as useful as it can be, even if it's regarding simple things. I found it somewhat annoying when I pressed and held the volume down button and the volume literally went all the way down, when I only needed the sound off for a few minutes... Then I'd have to slowly raise the volume again just to find the perfect comfortable volume. Having the ability to mute for a few seconds, then return to the same preferred volume is very convenient. It is not like we are losing the lock screen, just moving it. For anyone that had to remove the volume on their iPad, I am sure they know it takes more time and steps to raise the volume back verse "tap and swipe" to lock the screen.

Wait Robert, I am lost.
The anonymous at the top didn't mention anything about preferring one or the other, rather he just explained that there has been new developments which have not been correctly reflected in the article. So I do not understand why you are accusing him of saying something wrong?

I rather have the orientation lock as it is now rather than a mute control. Why? Let's say you are moving from, say, your couch to your bed. Whilst you are on the way, it would be handy if you could lock the orientation without having to look down at the screen. And besides, the volume can be muted quite easily by pressing down the volume button for a couple of seconds, and there is low chances that you are accidentally gonna increase the volume is there.

So long as they leave the option to configure it so it can remain a lock button, I will be happy. I find it extremely useful, certainly much more so than an 'extra' mute button. (I'm happy with the volume switch!)

It seems to me that the mute button is not for the CURRENT ipad but for a future one that will have FaceTime. Then a mute button would make sense, not to be interrupted... etc.
That would be quintessential Apple.

Anonymous 1 - What I meant was that even if you don't exit the app, you still have to interrupt what you're doing rather than simply flicking a switch.

What these comments prove is that different people use the iPad in different ways, and Apple should really consider that and give you the option. We'd like to choose what the button does, as you can choose what a double-click of the home button does. These absolute decisions annoy as many people as they please.

Anonymous 4 - Good point about FaceTime. If anyone ever uses it, a mute button would totally make sense.

Does the person leaving comments under the name "anonymous" (particularly on 25 October, 2010 13:07) happen to work for Apple by any chance?

Personally I don't like these updates. I had an old ipod touch where the Wi-Fi stopped working (unfortunately out-with warranty) and according to the Apple store genius it was likely a "firmware update" could have been what caused the permanent damage. It was a pain on an ipod, but it would totally ruin an ipad

Whats the point? You can mute an iPad by holding the "Volume Down" button for a second or so

Absolutely outrageous. I have bought this hardware with the vital rotation lock switch. They have no right to take away the feature I bought the machine with. IMO this is breach of contract. The screen button that is supposed to do the same thing doesn't. It only locks it into portrait so there will be no way to lock into landscape which is my preferred mode.

They will have to change this if enough of us complain wide and far. I really don't understand why apple always let their products down with this kind of 'we know better' domination attitude. They don't deserve the vast success they have achieved.

Anonymous 25 October, 2010 18:11

OH NOOO, I use the lock button all the time while surfing or reading :(

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 25 October, 2010 18:58

I have rotation lock turned on most of the time on my iPhone. To toggle the setting I press the big button twice, slosh the ram-resident icon list all the way to the right, and touch the rotation lock.

I am not sure why that's a big deal. Since there are more iPhones out there than iPads at the moment, Apple switched the iPad to line up with the iPhone.

Anonymous poster up there is saying there WILL be an option to change it back to an orientation lock. So who is lying?

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 25 October, 2010 21:30

The only thing that annoys me about this article is the link bait title. How moving the orientation lock from a hardware to software switch shows Apple doesn't want us to use the iPad in bed is beyond me.

1. Steve Jobs has publicly said there would not be a way to change the way the button works once the change over takes place (4.2). I don't know if you can change it by jail-breaking it and using Activator.

2. I assume they are doing this as a way to unify the workings of physical buttons between all iDevices so as to avoid confusion. I know I've forgotten and flipped the orientation switch when I was trying to mute the iPad.

3. Between FaceTime, and other alarms coming from various apps (Calendar, 2Do, etc...) I'm glad I can toggle mute without changing the volume level.

Wait wait hang we have several people saying exact opposite things we have some saying that there will be some there wont and that apple are being idiots not giving you a choice so the Q is, is there going to be an option or not I have an iPad and dearly hope for the option as when I use it it is very useful and whilst it may be for future models why not 1.make an option? 2.just include in iPad 2? And anonymous 25 October 16:25 Apple completely deserve they're success they make several products that are highly popular problem?

Anonymous 26 October, 2010 08:51

I understood that there would be a software solution, like a button in settings to lock it. So what's the big deal

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 26 October, 2010 14:36

Unlike the 4.1 implementation on iPhone, the 4.2 version on iPad supports landscape and portrait locking.

Eurgh -.- If You Had An iPhone 4, You Would Know That When You Double Tap Your Home Button For Multitasking, You Slide Too The Right An Oh, A Magical Button That Clearly Says "Orientation Lock", I Have Never Had The Need Too Constantly Lock Orientation On My iPhone, Or My iPad, So This Is A Good Thing, Now it Wont Randomly Start Playing Music Out Loud when I Sit On The Ole'Bluetooth Headset = )

iPad switch?

Use it to trn on/off 3G

Worst power sucker in the world is a 3G receiver with no signal.

Apple need to sort this out... immediately!
I don't want a mute button
I don't need a mute button
i bought a device with an orientation lock
I want my device to keep it's orientation lock.
Sort it out Jobs!

FFS. Double click the home button, swipe, turn on orientation lock. Keep using iPad. Is it really that big of a deal?

It makes sense, if the controls are the same for all iOS devices it saves confusion for new users, or people who frequently switch between devices.

Anonymous 30 October, 2010 14:02

I would want the switch to control 3G data - I have 3G turned off most of the time to avoid getting charged and save battery, but turn it on when I actually need it. That would be useful

On the Gold Master 4.2 OS for iPad the switch is NOT user assignable. Jailbreaking is your only recourse.

If the guys here at CNET think its a big deal then it really goes to show that they have to work very hard to find faults with iPads and iPhones that make a real life difference.

Maybe they should all just talk about Android Tablets from now on coz they are all class acts.

Sigh.

Anonymous 18 November, 2010 22:34

It was an orientation lock and should stay this way. I bloody paid for it, so don't take it away from me.
Mute button is completely pointless.

I use 4.2 beta right now and found the lack of an external orientation lock annoying.
If it needs to be changed - make it a function switch to which you can assign your own action (ie. mute, screen lock, 3G?Wi-Fi toggle or else).

If you were stupid enough to buy an Apple product... then bend over... smile.... and let Apple do what they do best..... screw their customers!!!!
What do you really expect.. Apple is about control, they tell you what to do and how to do it.... remember to register with iTunes guys!

If you really want any level of freedom use Android (or variants. HTC, etc) for you mobiles and for laptops/PC's use Ubuntu, Mandriva, Open Suse.... etc.... which all offer a truer Linux experience....

Choice, don't be so easy to lose it!
