Alienware M14x and M18x are gargantuan glowing gaming laptops

Sure, we like elegant, refined technology. Most days. But occasionally we feel the need to strap on our safety goggles, grit our teeth and gird our loins for a gaming laptop powerful enough to melt our eyeballs. The new Alienware M14x and M18x laptops will doubtless satisfy our craving for raw grunt -- 14-inch and 18-inch machines, they're two new additions to the Alienware family.

We've got a UK exclusive preview of the new M14x, so for an in-depth look at the more petite of the two new machines, including our benchmark results, we'd recommend checking that out. In the meantime though, here's an overview.

The M14x packs Intel's second-generation Core i5 and i7 processors, and can be kitted out with up to 8GB of RAM, plus an Nvidia GeForce GT 555M graphics card. It's a lethal triumvirate capable of wrestling your games to the ground and stomping on their sensitive regions. When we tested the M14x's graphical prowess we were extremely impressed.

Meanwhile the M18x (pictured above) is quite possibly the biggest thing in the world. An 18.4-inch screen is only the beginning -- this monster's angular, aggressive styling means it'll completely dominate your living room, and it looks so heavy we expect it'll crush your pelvis if you're foolish enough to actually use it on your lap. With a 4GHz Core i7 CPU, and the option to add up to -- wait for it -- 32GB of RAM, this gargantuan glowing Goliath looks set to satisfy even the most grunt-hungry gamer.

Both models are just as slathered in LEDs as their equally ridiculous cousins, the M17x, M15x and the tiny M11x. Glowing keyboards, logos, speakers and power switches are all present.

Alienware's also refreshing its successful M11x gaming netbook -- updated processors and a more capacious battery are the order of the day, and Alienware reckons you'll now squeeze 8 hours out of this miniature marvel.

The M14x and M11x R3 are available in the UK from today, while the M18x will be hitting shelves soon, probably in the next month or so. The starting price for the M14x is £1,100, while we don't have pricing for the M18x yet. We're confident it'll be more expensive though, so er... start saving now.

We'll be getting full reviews of every machine posted as soon as we're able -- stay tuned.
