AJP M575U: Shiny, happy, lethal

Desktop and laptop specialist AJP has just given us an exclusive first gawk at its M575U laptop. It's a real multimedia powerhouse, incorporating a nippy dual-core Intel T2500 CPU, 2GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX card, the fastest single mobile graphics adaptor money can buy.

It uses the Style-Note chassis as developed by Taiwanese laptop manufacturers Clevo, and while it's not the most aesthetically pleasing laptop we've seen, it's very shiny. And that's good enough for us superficial tech types.

While we liked its glossy body, we loved its 17-inch widescreen WUXGA display. This, incidentally, is also very shiny thanks to some contrast-enhancing shine-o-glaze coating, but uniquely it runs at a monster native resolution of 1,920x1,200 pixels.

That's higher than the high definition Holy Grail of 1080i (1,920x1,080 pixels), and higher than you get on some 24-inch TFTs. As a result, the M575U is outstanding for watching movies on.

We're going to spend the remainder of the afternoon with our feet up watching various high-definition trailers from the Microsoft WMV HD Content Showcase Web site, possibly finding time to write a full review somewhere along the way. Don't go looking for this £1,733 laptop anywhere else online. It's ours and we're not giving it back any time soon. -RR
