Asus Transformer Prime is not an Autobot, says US court
A US judge has ruled that the Asus Transformer Prime will not be banned from sale in the lead-up to a lawsuit brought by toy firm Hasbro -- suggesting the Android tablet doesn't infringe on the Transformer name.
The case initially began in December last year, when Hasbro -- maker of the robot shapeshifters -- began a court case arguing that Asus' latest tablet/laptop hybrid was infringing on its property with its use of the Transformer Prime name. Continue reading...
New iPad battery issue is a feature not a bug, says Apple
Apple has spoken out regarding claims that the new iPad's battery displays charge inaccurately, saying that far from being a bug, everything is proceeding according to plan.
The criticisms stemmed from reports that Apple's new tablet continues to top up after the battery icon shows it having 100 per cent charge. Sounds devious, but Apple says this quirk is deliberate, and is shared with other iOS devices to boot. Continue reading...
New iPad refunds offered in Aussie 4G furore
Apple is offering refunds to people who bought a new iPad because they mistakenly thought it would net them super-fast 4G Internet connection when they're out and about.
The Australian consumer watchdog took Apple to court over the new iPad's 4G billing, pointing out the small detail that it doesn't in fact work with the Aussie 4G network. Apple has subequently offered refunds to cobbers and Sheilas who bought their new iPad expecting fair dinkum 4G. Continue reading...
New iPad under fire in Australia over 'misleading' 4G claims
The new iPad has been criticised by an Australian consumer commission, which reckons the tablet's 4G claims are misleading to buyers, CNET reports.
In a statement, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says it'll be applying to a Federal Court, asking for fines against Apple, corrective advertising and a possible injunction against selling the tablet. The commission believes Apple is fooling folks with promises of faster 4G speeds. Continue reading...
New iPad global network speed test shames the UK
Apple's new iPad has had its network speeds tested around the globe, but the results aren't too rosy for the UK -- hit play on the video above to see quite how dismal our networks look compared with the rest of the world.
Brave CNETeers from our San Francisco, London, Singapore and Sydney offices took the new iPad outside to conduct a series of speed trials, in order to determine which nation affords iPad owners the fastest network speeds. And it sure as sausages ain't us. Continue reading...
New iPad isn't fully charged until 2 hours after saying so
Reports have surfaced online that the new iPad carries on charging once it says it's fully juiced. So what's going on?
Ray Soneira from DisplayMate Technologies Corporation has looked into it. His findings suggest the new iPad isn't fully charged until two hours and 10 minutes after it says it is, ZDNet reports. So if you want to get the full nine or 10 hours out of it (depending on what you're using it for), you'd be advised to leave it charging that little bit extra. Continue reading...
Retina display MacBooks incoming this summer?
If you've seen the new iPad you'll know the screen is pretty great. It might be no great shakes on first glance, but the fact it makes every other screen look blocky, grainy and washed out is testament to its quality.
Well, now Apple is rumoured to be bringing the retina display to its forthcoming range of MacBooks. Great news if you're set on buying one, get ready to avert your eyes if not. Continue reading...
New iPad overheating a non-issue, CNET tests confirm
Fears that the new iPad suffers from an overheating issue look to have been put to rest, thanks to an exhaustive investigation from our US sister site CNET.com, which concludes that while Apple's new tablet does indeed get hotter than its predecessor, it's not too hot.
Our buddies across the Atlantic broke out the infrared thermometer gun, testing both the original iPad and iPad 2's temperature at the four back corners of the casing, as well as the Apple logo in the centre. Continue reading...
New iPad heat blamed on screen, Wi-Fi prompts new complaints
The new iPad's screen could be the source of overheating complaints, according to experts. Excess heat isn't the only problem with the Apple tablet either, as some iPadders have reported issues with its Wi-Fi signal.
Some new owners are concerned about weak Wi-Fi signals, although reports vary as to the causes and circumstances. Other customers have complained their new iPad gets warmer than is healthy while they're using it, and Raymond Soneira, boss of DisplayMate Technologies, reckons it's the backlit screen that's to blame. Apple denies new iPad overheats
Apple has spoken out against claims that the new iPad gets too warm, claiming that its latest tablet is "operating well within our thermal specifications".
Since the tablet went on sale last Friday, reports have been doing the rounds that one of the new iPad's corners has a tendency to become unduly warm during use. Continue reading...
New iPad online orders now shipping in 1-2 weeks
Online availability for the new iPad has improved, with shipping estimates for the desirable new tablet now showing "1-2 weeks".

New iPad sales hit 3 million in three days
Apple has flogged 3 million new iPads in the last three days, a figure the company reckons beats the previous two iterations of its glossy tablet.
The new iPad went on sale in the UK and other countries on Friday 16 March, and it would seem gadget enthusiasts are extremely eager to throw down cash to acquire one. Sales are likely to be boosted further later this week, as the new tablet becomes available in 24 more countries this Friday. Continue reading...
New iPad prompts 'record weekend' as Apple pays out £28bn
The new iPad ushered in a record weekend for Apple, the fruit-flavoured iPhone folks have revealed. Announcing plans for its £62bn cash reserves, Apple's boss said he was "thrilled" with the new tablet.
There were no sales figures forthcoming during today's announcement, but based on the fact that Apple has been making money hand over fist for quite some time now, it's safe to speculate that a record weekend for Apple involves some serious moolah. Continue reading...
Apple's new iPad overheats, irate users complain
It's the sizzling tech launch of the season, but it appears the new iPad is too hot to handle for some people, with complaints emerging of the device overheating.
The hot potato on Apple's support forums is that the iPad -- in a fair number of instances -- is prone to getting too hot in the lower-left corner, when held in portrait with the home button at the bottom. Continue reading...
New iPad jailbroken three ways by Sunday
Well, that didn't take long. No sooner had the new iPad gone on sale than hackers were trying to circumvent its security -- and at least three have succeeded.
On Friday, the day of the iPad's release, Dev-Team's MuscleNerd tweeted a couple of images showing that he had already jailbroken the device, meaning it could then run all sorts of apps that Apple wouldn't let within 100 miles of the App Store. The first is a terminal app (with a lot of code that means very little to us), while the second shows the Cydia Store -- the place from which you download apps for jailbroken iOS devices -- up and open. Continue reading...
New iPad benchmarked against Asus Transformer Prime
Apple's claim that the new iPad's A5X processor outperforms the Nvidia Tegra 3 when it comes to graphical power seems to be accurate -- or at least that's what a new test shows.
Australian tech blogger Richie ran a benchmarking test (video below) pitting the new iPad against the Tegra 3-equipped, Android-powered Asus Transformer Prime. He found that the dual-core/four-graphic-core A5X gave much better results than the quad-core/12-graphic core Tegra 3. Continue reading...
New iPad bashed over 'misleading' 4G billing
The new iPad’s 4G capabilities are available only in North America, but the branding of international models as 'WiFi + 4G' is apparently flummoxing consumers.
According to SlashGear, carriers outside of North America are more than a little miffed by the 4G billing, as some iPad buyers expect access to the blazingly fast speeds promised by LTE but instead are limited to the HSPA, HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA connections their non-LTE local networks provide. Continue reading...
