Google Nexus 4 delivery down to 3 days, Nexus 7 dock on sale
Delivery time for the Google Nexus 4 has been slashed to its shortest time ever. Order now and you'll have the phenomenally popular Android smart phone in as little as three days. And the Google Nexus 7 now has a dock too.
After stock shortages saw the Nexus 4 available to buy for just a few hours in its first couple of months on sale, delivery times are now down to between three and five working days. Continue reading...
Microsoft Surface on sale at Currys, PC World, not in shops
The Microsoft Surface is coming to Currys and PC World -- but you still can't try it out, as it's not coming to your nearest shop, yet.
You can only order the Surface online, whether for delivery or to have one sent to a Currys or PC World store for you to collect at your convenience. But don't think you can pop down to your nearest branch to have a poke and a play with the Surface, as they won't have them in shops either to try or to buy. Continue reading...
US judge slashes Samsung's $1bn Apple payout by 40%
It seems like a long time ago now, but remember when Samsung was ordered to pay Apple $1bn (£660m) in the tech trial of the century? A US judge has ordered that amount be slashed by 40 per cent, and wants a new trial set too, to assess the level of damages, the BBC reports.
That's right, it's back to court for the two tech giants. Continue reading...
Surface Pro confirmed for UK 'in the coming months'
If you were a little disappointed by the Surface Pro being exclusive to the US, you won't have much longer to wait -- Microsoft is bringing the full Windows 8 Surface to Britain "in the coming months".
While Microsoft didn't exactly offer much explanation as to how many months that would be, or if it'll be on sale in John Lewis like the ARM-powered Surface RT, it did say the rollout of the Surface PCs to more countries will begin in late March -- and why wouldn't the UK be an early bird? After all, we did get the RT early. Lucky us.

Firefox OS, Tizen and Wi-Fi coffee machine shown off at MWC
As Mobile World Congress rumbles into its third day, the CNET team on the ground in Barcelona has been combing the show to make sure you don't miss a single product or announcement. Here are the highlights from the last tech-packed 24 hours.
Operating systems have been big news at the show this year, with Firefox showing of its new OS on Sunday and the Tizen Association unveiling its own OS at a press conference yesterday. Continue reading...
Apple no longer most admired company, but tops UK brand list
Apple could be about to drop off the top spot from Fortune magazine's prestigious World's Most Admired Companies list. The list doesn't come out until later in the week, but according to a blog post by Forbes' Brad Chase, the company isn't likely to retain its number one placing.
It's not all bad news for Apple though. It's just been voted top of the Business Superbrands list here in the UK, and second in the list of Consumer Superbrands. Swings and roundabouts. Continue reading...
Nokia 720 and oversized phones from LG, ZTE at MWC
CNET staff hit the ground running on the first official day of Mobile World Congress yesterday, turning up bright and early with not a bleary eye in sight to make it to Nokia's 8.30am press conference.
A series of budget and midrange handsets were launched, chief among them the latest additions to Nokia's Windows Phone 8 range, the Lumia 720 and 520. At the budget end of the scale was the Nokia 105, a €15 phone, which with a 1.5-inch screen and weeks' worth of battery life in standby mode, harks back to the Nokia we know of old. Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Huawei Ascend P2 kick off MWC 2013
Phone fans assemble! Mobile World Congress 2013 got underway yesterday in sunny Barcelona, and already a whole bunch of goodies have been unveiled.
Samsung got the fiesta off to a flying start by lifting the lid on the Galaxy Note 8, an Android tablet to rival Apple's iPad mini. It'll launch with Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean on board and proudly packs a 1.6GHz quad-core chip with 2GB of RAM. Continue reading...
Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 leaks ahead of MWC
And the leaks continue. The show stands at Mobile World Congress are still being set up as we speak, but someone's plugged in the Samsung screen early, accidentally showing off the Galaxy Note 8.0, Engadget reports.
It's pretty much as we expected, just about the right size to hold in one hand from the looks of things, and comes with a stylus. No doubt that'll be the same S-Pen that comes with the Galaxy Note 2 and the Note 10.1. But what's that in the top corner? An ear speaker? Is this thing going to make calls too? Continue reading...
Asus teases a new PadFone ahead of MWC
Everyone's at this teaser game nowadays. Maybe not quite to the same extent as HTC, but still, you can't get through the run-up to a major trade show without being teased left right and centre about upcoming products. Asus' latest is a little odd.
We see Christopher Columbus atop his Monument in Barcelona (the city where Mobile World Congress takes place). But wait! He's not holding a scroll, but a tablet. He takes a call on it, speaking Spanish, telling the person at the other end, "I'm at work right now," and then hangs up. I've embedded it after the break. Continue reading...
Where to find CNET's coverage of Mobile World Congress
We're all going to sunny Spain for Mobile World Congress, the annual trade show for phones, tablets, apps and mobile services. Held in Barcelona, over 65,000 people are expected to show up to see what the latest trends are.
You don't need to go anywhere, though: for the first time the different CNET sites around the world are combining forces to bring you the best coverage of this show on the net. We'll have a team of 20 people scouring the show floor for the hottest stories, and we'll be live blogging all the press conferences that matter. As soon as something interesting is announced, we'll have a story, photo and video of it. Continue reading...
Chromebook Pixel has retina-beating touchscreen for £1,049
Android-maker Google has made an unexpected move, crafting a MacBook-rivalling laptop with a stupendously high-res screen, and a price to match.
The Chromebook Pixel has a 12.85-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 2,560x1,700 pixels, for a pixel-per-inch count of 239. That's even higher than the ludicrous number of pixels jammed inside Apple's 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, which has a 13.3-inch, 2,560x1,600 display, at 227 pixels per inch. Continue reading...
Asus 'Metallic Miracle' teased ahead of Monday debut
Asus has teased its biggest new gadget in a cryptic Cloverfield-esque trailer that promises "Miracle Metal", and possibly a hostile takeover of the Catholic Church.
The clip itself, embedded below, gives little away, but shows a large metal object flying over Barcelona in Spain, before plonking itself down in the middle of a large church.
Google Nexus 7 and 10 first to try new Ubuntu tablet OS
Ubuntu for tablets is a new operating system for slates, joining Ubuntu for phones -- and you can try out features such as phone apps sharing the screen with tablet apps on your Google Nexus 7 or Nexus 10.
Although it's optimised for the ARM chips that power tablets, the tablet version of the OS shares most of its code with desktop Ubuntu. That means you should be able to dock your phone or tablet with TV, computer or keyboard and the interface will adapt accordingly. Continue reading...
Sony patents touchscreen gaming device dubbed 'EyePad'
Sony is set to reveal the future of PlayStation this week, but it seems that direction may be something we never expected -- a touchscreen gaming tablet to take on the iPad, known as, er, the EyePad.
A European patent filed by the Japanese company last year, which was recently published and spotted by the Gamechup blog, details a gamepad with a screen, similar to that of the Wii U, which will track your movement using the glowing light on the side of the device, much like the PlayStation Move. Continue reading...
iPad concept from 1982 and 'Baby Mac' revealed in new book
Contrary to what it would have you believe, Apple didn't invent the tablet -- but it did have some promising concept designs sketched up as early as 1982.
The snap above, which shows an Apple tablet design decades before the introduction of the iPad, is one prototype gadget detailed in a recently published book of design written by Hartmut Esslinger. Continue reading...
Nokia won't launch a tablet at MWC, analysts say
We've heard more than a few murmurings about a Nokia tablet in recent months, but one analyst company reckons it'll be a while before we actually see the device. That's because the Finnish phone firm won't launch a slate PC at Mobile World Congress in a week's time, according to Strategy Analytics.
It's been conducting "extensive channel checks" and found that Nokia doesn't have a tablet in the works. At least, not at a stage ready for production. Continue reading...
Norfolk Apple Shop changes name: We sell cider, not iPads!
The Apple Shop in Hoveton, Norfolk, can't help you with queries about your iPhone or iPad. That's because it sells a different kind of produce altogether, namely local cider.
Unfortunately, since the Apple Store opened in Norwich in 2009, the cider-seller has been inundated with tech queries, so much so that the owner has decided to change the name to avoid any confusion. Starting in the Easter holidays, the Apple Shop in Wroxham Barns will be renamed The Norfolk Cider Shop, Norwich Evening News 24 reports. Continue reading...
Smaller Windows 8 tablets could happen, Microsoft exec hints
Smaller Windows 8 tablets could soon take on the Nexus 7 and iPad mini, according to Microsoft's chief financial officer Peter Klein, speaking during a Q&A session at the Goldman Sachs Technology & Internet conference yesterday.
When asked about Microsoft's plans to address different sized form factors, ranging from 4 inches all the way up to 13 inches and even bigger, Klein said that the company was ready "to respond to demand". Continue reading...
