Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 battles Nexus 7, has boring specs
Samsung has a new tablet toy to battle the Nexus 7 -- but its latest effort is unlikely to have Google's popular tablet quaking in its boots.
The Galaxy Tab 3 is a 7-inch sequel to last year's Galaxy Tab 2, which came in both 7 and 10.1-inch versions. This year's model courageously comes in just one size, but the hardware on offer doesn't exactly set our hearts aflame. Continue reading...
Samsung renames all its PCs - they're all Ativ now
Samsung has decided its 'Ativ' brand has been so successful that it's renaming all of its Windows PCs with the nonsensical moniker.
Ativ is Vita backwards -- I'm not joking, that's Samsung's reasoning -- and previously only applied to the Ativ Smart PC and Smart PC Pro, both Windows 8 tablets. Continue reading...
HP Slate 7 Android tablet just £129, in UK on 1 May
HP's new 7-inch Android tablet, the Slate 7, undercuts the brilliantly bargainous Nexus 7 by £30, going on sale next week for the jaw-droppingly low price of £129, direct from HP.
The Slate 7 is HP's new effort at a touchscreen tablet for normal people, after the utterly disastrous TouchPad. Its strategy now seems to be to make it as cheap as possible to put a touchscreen in your hands, with significantly lower specs than Google's 7-incher. Continue reading...
Microsoft Surface Pro coming to the UK in May
Microsoft's proper Windows 8 tablet, the Surface Pro, is coming to the UK "before the end of May", according to a company blog post. The software behemoth has yet to announce prices.
The last we heard about the delayed Pro was several weeks ago, when Microsoft said it was due "in the coming months". It'll arrive in other countries next month too, covering much of Europe -- Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland -- and further afield in Australia, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Samsung working on mind-controlled tablets and phones
Here's some food for thought -- Samsung is exploring making mobiles and tablets you control with your mind, MIT Technology Review reports. Samsung researchers are working with boffins at the University of Texas to find ways to launch an app, select a contact, pick a song from a playlist, and switch a device on and off, all using just your thoughts.
Better hope nothing just pops in there. Continue reading...
iPad's dominance in the UK starting to slip, poll says
Apple's grip on British tablet buyers is slipping, according to the latest figures from YouGov.
In the first three months of 2012, 73 per cent of Brits buying tablets opted for an Apple-flavoured slate. A year later, Apple is still dominant, but the number has fallen to 63 per cent. Samsung, Amazon, and Google are all gaining on the Cupertino company. Continue reading...
Windows iPad mini rival tablets coming, Microsoft confirms
If you held off buying a Surface because it was too big or expensive, you might be delighted to hear that "a new suite of small touch devices powered by Windows" will be splashing down "in the coming months", according to Microsoft exec Peter Klein.
Speaking on a company earnings call, Klein confirmed that dinky Windows tablets are in the works, our sister site CNET News reports. He did say the software behemoth was working with partners on the small-scale slates, so other companies could be working on them, but he didn't rule out a Surface mini. Continue reading...
Tablets more popular than phones for iPlayer, BBC says
Brits used more tablets than smart phones to watch iPlayer in March, the BBC says -- the first time that slate-shaped devices have overtaken mobiles in the Beeb's viewing figures.
200,000 more requests to iPlayer came from tablets than phones last month, the BBC says, while requests from all mobile devices made up a healthy 30 per cent of all traffic to Auntie's on-demand service. Continue reading...

Middle-class bazaar John Lewis is offering one less reason to buy your gadgets from Amazon today, with six months of free broadband when you buy any Internet-enabled product.

BlackBerry Z10 could go 5-inch to rival Samsung Galaxy Note
BlackBerry could be about to take on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 with a 5-inch version of the Z10. A phablet packing BlackBerry 10 software could be BlackBerry's secret weapon to regain its past glory, according to experts.
The struggling phone-fabricator could launch the 5-inch touchscreen phone-cum-tablet in the last three months of the year, the crucial holiday season. That's according to Jefferies & Co analyst Peter Misek, despite other experts arguing phablets are a fad. Continue reading...
Windows 8 tablet prices to plummet, Intel promises
Windows 8 tablets and touchscreen laptops -- until now significantly more expensive than their Android-based brethren -- are set to plummet in price, Intel promises.
"If you look at touch-enabled Intel-based notebooks that are ultrathin... Those prices are going to be down to as low as $200," teased the chipmaker's CEO Paul Otellini, our sister site CNET News reports. That puts them in range of super-cheap slates like the £159 Nexus 7, which is powered by Nvidia's Tegra chip.

But instead of wanting revenge, he just wanted to find out what'd happened to it. So he activated a tracking app he'd already installed, called Hidden App, The Telegraph reports. Continue reading...

The Samsung Galaxy Mega is official and it's coming to Britain. Mega features include a high-definition screen and 4G, and a bunch of new features from the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Microsoft scrambling to build 7-inch Surface tablet, say reports
Microsoft is racing to produce a 7-inch version of its Surface tablet, according to the Wall Street Journal, which quotes sources at the company saying it's having to react to the popularity of smaller tablets such as the Nexus 7 and iPad mini.
The software behemoth hadn't initially planned a smaller Surface, preferring to keep the lineup simpler with just the standard and Pro versions. But Google's success in getting its slates in people's hands has forced a change of course. Continue reading...

Lower screen specs hint smaller Windows 8 tablets incoming
Smaller Windows 8 tablets could be on the way, if Microsoft's new guidelines are anything to go by. This month, the Redmond-based company relaxed its certification specs for manufacturers, The Register reports. The minimum screen resolution has been dropped from 1,366x768 pixels to 1,024x768 pixels, meaning future Windows 8-running slates could have smaller screens than the current crop.
Does Microsoft have tablets like the Nexus 7 and iPad mini in its sights? An exec has already hinted titchier tabs could be coming soon, after all. Continue reading...
