13-inch retina display MacBook Pro is super-slim, but pricey

Apple's made a 13-inch version of its MacBook Pro that packs a retina display and is 20 per cent thinner than the current model.

Apple unveiled its new toy at an event this evening. The iPad-spawning company says the retina-packing MacBook Pro measures just 19mm inches thick, weighs about 1.6kg and has a stonkingly high pixel count.

Specifically, this aluminium box of tricks packs a 2,560x1,600-pixel panel -- nearly twice the resolution of a 1080p TV. If you liked the 15-inch retina-packing MacBook Pro but thought it looked a little bulky, this could be the laptop for you.

You can choose up to 768GB of flash storage and 8GB of RAM, Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processors, while other features include a FaceTime HD camera, two Thunderbolt ports, an SD card slot, HDMI output and USB 3.0.

The bad news is that this computing powerhouse will cost you an arm and a leg. The price starts at £1,449, but will quickly climb if you decide to add more storage or a more powerful processor. A model that has 256GB of flash storage is also available, and starts at £1,699.

The good news is this device starts shipping immediately, so if you've got loads of cash you want to get rid of, you won't have to wait long.

Will you buy this 13-inch retina MacBook Pro? Or would you rather own something cheaper? Tell me in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

We get ripped off here, especially when Apple pays so little back in tax I don't understand how they come up with these prices for the UK or how they are getting away with paying so little in tax. Legislation needs to change as there are too many loopholes. It should be around £1,065 but instead we have to pay £1,500 a joke.

Does this include include dedicated graphics card as per MBP 15inch?

So, for £1699 I can get a dual core 13" MBP with 256 hdd and a rubbish graphics card.

Or, for £1799 I can get the quad core 15" MBP with 256 hdd and a discrete card.

What a con. I love Apple products but these disparities will drive people back to PC and just when Apple where starting to challenge the PC hegemony.

How apple gets away with this? I don't really know. How can a computer priced at $1699 in the US ends up costing £1449 in the UK is beyond me. Someone in the house of common should take a good look at this. this is theft, £400 price difference for computers that aren't even made in the US! unbelievable. Apple is taking UK consumers for a ride. This has got to stop.

these are expensive! Though don't do a currency conversion- there's VAT over here (plus another UK specific tax) which amounts to about 25% on top of the US to UK currency exchange. Personally, I'd like it all to be free- or at least $1 = £1 (except when I go to the US!). Surely Apple can afford either of those?! I've got a nexus 7. If money was no object I'd get this because of the better apps in IOS. But as hardware goes the Nexus 7 is hard to beat.

Strongly agree with below comment. Prices are a joke and completely unwarranted. I was considering this as my first step into the Mac world. Needless to say when I seen the price I thought apple can shove it up there arse.

All other manufacturers are slashing the prices of the conventional laptops like these, cos there is windows 8 on the horizon and the hybrid model that it brings. But not Apple and why? Because they probably don't believe in the success of that product and think laptop will stay as a laptop we know today. We'll see how it turns out in the end, but my guess is in 3 years time Apple will be way behind Windows...
