Sony to release touchscreen Vaio laptop

Laptops

A Sony Vaio laptop with a touchscreen interface is on its way, a company executive said on Thursday.

In an interview with Laptop Mag, Sony executive Mike Abary confirmed that an upcoming laptop will have a touchscreen that will take advantage of the touch feature in the upcoming Windows 7.

Asked about the possibility of a touchscreen laptop before the end of 2009, Abary said: "There are certain things that will be native on Windows 7 that we are certainly going to take advantage of. Without giving too much away, we think touch on Windows 7 is something we find compelling and we will certainly introduce touch into some of our products at the launch of Windows 7. You will see touch capabilities introduced on Vaio products that take advantage of Windows 7."

Whether this will come on a Sony Vaio laptop like the Vaio P-series Lifestyle PC or the Vaio Mini-W netbook remains to be seen.

Sony will probably have competition in the touchscreen laptop category once Windows 7 is released in late October. Although there are some on the market already, they tend to be convertible laptops, like those from HP and Asus, favoured by business customers.
