Apple unveils 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro

At its keynote at Macworld today, Apple excitedly announced a 17-inch MacBook Pro, featuring the unibody chassis we've seen in the new MacBook models, an LED-backlit display running with a 1,920x1,200-pixel resolution and a contrast ratio of 700:1.

At 25mm thick, it's the thinnest 17-inch laptop in the world, Apple claims. It features an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, Nvidia 9400M and 9600M graphics, a glass trackpad, FireWire 800, three USB 2.0 ports, and up to 8 hours of continuous performance from an insanely capacious new battery.

The battery -- which Apple designed itself -- isn't user-replaceable, which was apparently an essential design decision in order to make the battery 40 per cent larger, and thus longer-lasting. It uses something called 'adaptive charging' to reduce the wear on the cells that occurs during recharging.

UK availability begins at the end of January -- it's available to pre-order now at the Apple Store -- with prices starting from £1,949. Holy cripes!
