Watch Exclusive: MSI Wind hands-on video video in the Videos section
We've spent the day playing with the MSI Wind, a cheap laptop that's set to rock the world of the Asus Eee PC. It runs Windows or Linux, with the Windows version set to cost a mere £329 when it hits the shops in June. There are a couple of details we can't reveal about it until the official launch on Tuesday, but until then watch our video for a full hands-on tour of this exciting new product, check out our hands-on photos here or discuss it in our MSI Wind forum.

that 30% heavier is because of the larger battery giving this device in the 6-7hour range. to get anywhere close to that with the EEE you will have to buy a 3rd party extended battery which will increase the weight & price.

I was about to get the wife an Asus EEE - now I'm torn as this one looks a lot more practical with the larger keyboard and better display. Do you know what resolution it will output to if I connected to a monitor?

It uses an Intel integrated graphics chip that can support non-plug&play modes (at 60Hz and up to 32bpp colors) including 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200. It should also support custom widescreen display modes.

can i run games on that machine? I know the answer depends on the game ... so low end WoW e.g. and high end 1st person shooter?
Thanks!

Not really, no. But check the final specs of the MSI Wind when they're unveiled next week, then check the minimum requirements for your favourite game.

very interesting !!!!

@Rory Reid
-How would you describe the stability (stretch resistance) of the keyboard and the display cover?
-Is the quality of the hinges as good as the ones on the HP Mini-Note?

I doubt this thing'll run any DX9 game. Anything that requires a geforce 6800 min spec is definitely out of the question; you could probably bump that back to the 5 series. Since it's not a discreet vid card, your system memory will be shared with video...
This is meant for browsing, office apps, and being very light, portable, and cheap.

Nice video, will a model with SSD come out? It is the only criteria that makes me undecided. I rather have 16GB (+ whatever SD card you put in) which makes the laptop faster and lighter, and in case I need massive storage I can always bring an external 2.5" hard disk along. I tried my friends eee pc 900 with linux and I can't believe how fast it turned on and ready to be used.

Are we ment to guess what speed/make of cpu is in this? I'd have though that it should have been one of the first things said in the video.
AnonymousSun 1 June, 2008 8:30pm
CNet aren't allowed to say the chip speed; one of the conditions of having an early exclusive review.

What about the Linux version? You Windows-centric people are so depressing.
Also, what about some interesting facts like boot time compared with eeePC. That was a really poor review, which is *not* a good thing.

This is NOT a review.
It's an early hands-on video. Think of it as a teaser before the main event.
Regarding the CPU -- we weren't allowed to mention it at the time, but it's an Intel Atom 1.6GHz N270. There will be a Linux version, possibly costing around £200 later in the year. You can read a preview by clicking the 'MSI Wind' link at the beginning of the story above.
We'll have a full review with benchmark tests very soon.

I don't get it - I paid £249 for my Advent 9912; a celeron-M 1.73, 80Gb HD, Vista and a 12" screen. Just as portable as these 10" mini laptops yet way more practical and cheaper.

Good review Rory - looks like the best alternative to the Eee, which seems to have lost it's way a little bit with the follow up machines.

1.3Kg is 30% more heavy than eee 9xx or about 1/3 more than eee 7xx.
too bad the 8.2" version will have the same chasis.
Anyway why can't we get bluetooth with the linux version?
And why not an option for small flash SSD in linux version?
