WannabEees: Eee PC vs Elonex One vs OLPC vs EasyNote XS vs MSI Wind and more

Asus Eee PC 900, £300
The Eee PC 900 is the bigger, badder version of the original Eee PC 701. Announced officially at CeBIT 2008, this comes with an 8.9-inch widescreen display, an 1,024x600-pixel resolution, and up to 12GB of solid-state memory.
The chassis is very similar to that of the previous Eee PC 701, which we reviewed here, so it's still highly portable and the keyboard is still a tiny bit... tiny.
Still, mustn't grumble. The Eee PC 900 is an attractive proposition. It might be a tad expensive compared to the MSI Wind, but we're sure Asus will stay competitive. Watch for a release later this year, or read more here.
Update: A previous version of this article said the native resolution of the Eee PC 900 was 800x480 pixels. The correct resolution is set to be 1,024x600 pixels.
Update: Read our full Asus Eee PC 900 review.

so much advertising... so little thought and content. comparing a $1k machine to a $200-250 machine is like comparing a base-model honda civic to a turbo-charged subaru forester xt. stupid stupid stupid
AnonymousWed 12 March, 2008 3:02pm
Of course the OLPC was the first, and kicked off this market. One of the main differences is the OLPC has charitable aims not a commercial aims. The copies only serve to detract from the objective.
Rory ReidWed 12 March, 2008 3:06pm
Er... Where exactly do we compare a $1000 laptop to a $200 laptop?
Rory ReidWed 12 March, 2008 3:09pm
Oh, and Subaru Foresters SUCK.
AnonymousWed 12 March, 2008 3:20pm
It is an irrational comparison. You can't compare machines that are twice or three times as expensive as each other. Dumb article - great PR work be eee.
AnonymousWed 12 March, 2008 3:22pm
Why in gods name would you turbo-charge a subaru forseter? Thats like throwing a supercharger on a kia....
AnonymousWed 12 March, 2008 3:35pm
YOU ARE WRONG, the new eePC's screen resolution is 1024x600
AnonymousWed 12 March, 2008 3:51pm
One fact about the Asus Eee PC 900 series (with an 8.9" display) which was wrongfully stated in the article: the screen resolution will actually be 1024x600, and not 800x480!
In order not to confuse the readers, please check this fact and update the article accordingly. Thank you!
Rory ReidWed 12 March, 2008 4:07pm
You're quite correct. The story has been updated accordingly. Thank you.

Why are people quoting the actual price in BRITISH POUNDS as US DOLLARS?
Stupid, stupid, stupid. I'd say the Vostro 1000 with: 15.4" display, a Radeon x1150, 1GB 533 MHZ DDR, AMD 64 bit TK-57 dual-core set-up for $449, that's ~247 pounds (a bit more than the Eee PC for a macine that 0wns it in every regard except of course size, see macbook air if you want an over-priced under-powered WUSSIFIED laptop -forget the Eee! Unless you're buying it for an extremely physically weak child.). What?! If you can carry 3 kg, you can carry a Vostro, and an extra battery, all in a laptop case with ease.
AnonymousWed 12 March, 2008 4:39pm
Oh yea, the Vostro has free shipping (LIMITED TIME) if you're a Yank!
AnonymousWed 12 March, 2008 4:47pm
rory.. normally i don't involve myself in flame wars, but i have had nothing but good experiences driving the forresster.
i have to say that this years model was even better than last year's. better sunroof, and boy can that thing handle. i used to highway drive it at 140-180k for long periods of time, and it handled like butta .
AnonymousWed 12 March, 2008 4:54pm
"if you're a Yank!"
Why would anyone be anything else?
Rory ReidWed 12 March, 2008 5:01pm
You can't judge handling by driving it on a US highway. They're all long, straight lines. Most cars do quite well at going in a straight line. It's not exactly hard. I assume you're saying it was a smooth ride... which again isn't hard. What's tricky is making a car that goes round corners well. And we all know that butta doesn't corner well.

i like the look of the olpc. it is cute and it has a noble aim.

A bit of clarification on the Easynote:
VIA Nanobook is the name of the concept/design that VIA sold to Packard Bell for production as the Packard Bell EasyNote XS in the UK, and to Everex for production as the Everex Cloudbook in the US. It was not "Originally the Everex Cloudbook," the concept is called the VIA Nanobook, the US implementation of the concept is the Everex Cloudbook, and the UK implementation is the Packard Bell EasyNote XS.

I'd like an OLPC. It reminds me of the good old BBC Micro days and for kids should be great with the mesh networking and the ability to get to the code.
I've been reading stories about people in third world places where actually food is available and what they need is education. What some are now forming cooperatives to do or being helped by charities to do is get that education. People are thinking of their children's future.
I think the OLPC is a much better platform to do that, hopefully to give the same kind of introduction and get the same kind of interest in computing as the old BBC Micros did! It really beats just learning how to use a single brand of word processor which is what some people seem to think computer education should be.

"You can't judge handling by driving it on a US highway. They're all long, straight lines."
That was ignorant. Brush up on your geography. North America has more mountainous roads than anywhere else in the world.
Yup, a Canadian defending the US - who would have thought.
Ignorance may be bliss, but it's also annoying.

I had my doubts on this EEE Pc but the minute I got it I realized that the Big guys were going to be scared. The EEE does not promise to be a PC replacement but a basic internet and word proc. compter which is ultra portable. In my opinion it has met my needs 10 fold. Everyone I have showed it to has purchased one.
AnonymousThu 13 March, 2008 4:34am
unread because you have no "print" link
AnonymousThu 13 March, 2008 4:50am
Starving but IT capable child? The OLPC is not meant for places where food is a problem. I suggest you do some basic reading on their website.

Review missed Intel classmate and its versions. The one in India which HCL is selling is good and cheaper compare to eee pc
AnonymousThu 13 March, 2008 12:11pm
Rory, good roundup. There are a few that you missed (HP one, forget the name and my new personal favourite, the ECS G10IL which still has no specs announced yet) but still good.
One of these is definitely going to be my next mobile dev machine since the missus is getting to touchy feely with the eee at home, so it was very useful. The Dell is unfortunately too big for some stealthy coding so it is out but the performance and build quality you can't argue with.
To add my 2 pence worth on the Forrester issue, I agree with you, Forrester's are pants, i'd take the Civic and supercharge it! anyway SEAT Léon Cupra for the Win!
PS One of the most random discussion threads I have seen in a while. Keep it up guys/gals :D
PPS Where did Rory compare a $1000 machine to a $200 machine? must of missed it

How do I view this in one page - i.e. without clicking several seperate pages.
A "print-view" would work for me?
As someone above commented.. "unread because you have no "print" link"
Same for me too.

unread because i'm too busy standing in the library shouting at the books "where is your print link? I refuse to turn pages!"

AnonymousWed 2 April, 2008 9:28pm
I Agree that the MSI looks the nicest.... i mean some of the others are so ugly you couldnt be seen dead with them. For the eee pc i just cant settle for 2 or 4gb SSD....so if MSI release a 2.5" (80Gb) option that would be better for me!

Just a gentle reminder that many grownups have slender fingers - think females for a start. A woman I knew touch-typed brilliantly on an HP Jornada 710. If I could have afforded one at the time, I'd still be using it. And the Eee is on my buy list - but I do want to see the next model first.
AnonymousThu 17 April, 2008 10:22pm

Intend to buy xp 900 asus - have a laptop 15.4"- but this is for web and email on holiday - does anyone have a list of downloads for the 900 or one of useful accessories? also not sure what the lack of hard disk means in practical terms replaced by flash memory - will the ansu 900 take most software made for a standard PC? Thks
AnonymousThu 5 June, 2008 10:40am
Why can't you compare things which are five times the price? I recently compared jersey potatoes with cornish potatoes at the same sort of price differential. I bought jersey the first time (treat - first jerseys of the year) but bought cornish until last week when the jersey price had dipped sufficiently to make it better value for money.
What's this about a print link? I've never seen a print link. Do only the yanks get those?
By the way, it's only the more expensive EEE that gets the higher res screen.
I agree about the randomness of this thread.
AnonymousMon 16 June, 2008 6:24pm
i agree completely, yanks are pants.
AnonymousThu 19 June, 2008 9:08am
Surely the point of including the Dell is to make a reader think about whether he/she really wants a light weight portable computer. There are now many cheap laptops, but lugging them around would be painful on the arms. Cost and weight are the factors here, aren't they?
AnonymousSat 28 June, 2008 12:19am
The EEE is still the best!
(So is my Land Rover Freelander TD4:)

AnonymousSun 10 August, 2008 6:03pm
Asus 901 much better than the 900. It has a much longer battery life too (supposed to be 8 hours, but in reality perhaps it will be around 6 hours). They've also brought out the 904 but I'm not sure if it's the same size screen. Asus 1000 is 10" screen.
