Asus Eee PC 900: Nearly 9 inches of joy
Tags: asus, inch, eee pc, asus eee pc
The oft-rumoured '9-inch' version of the super-cheap, Linux-powered Asus Eee PC has just been unveiled at the CeBIT exhibition in Hanover, Germany. The Eee PC 900, as it's to be known, uses an identical chassis to the previous model but ditches the 7-inch display for one that measures 8.9 inches across.
Asus has managed this by replacing the large, black speakers that flanked the previous screen, with thinner, less unsightly ones. Unfortunately there's no word on whether the resolution has been increased from the standard 800x480 pixels, but you do get the option of 1GB of RAM and solid-state hard drives as large as 12GB.
The Eee PC 900 is set for a summer release and will cost around £300. Click back for more deets and a full review in the near future. -Rory Reid
Update: The screen resolution is 1,024x600 pixels. The original Eee PC's screen resolution was 800x480, not 600x480 as previously stated.

Thanks for that, looking forwards for this one.
The screen does look like a slightly different aspect ratio, but we'll see.

I agree 800x480 is rather cramped most of the time. I plug mine in to a normal LCD screen, keyboard and mouse if I'm working for any length of time on it at home (it's my main PC).
If I were choosing again, I would be thinking of spending £300 on a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Ubuntu on it. For me, low price is more important than low weight and small size though.

Why are some models black and some models white? I prefer black. I hope there's a black version of the Asus Eee PC 900.

this looks like the asus eee pc that most people have wanted since the beginning, however...while it's got the portability nailed £300 is getting awfully close to the low-end dells of this world.
You could even buy 3 Elonex £100 laptops and strap them together, you'd have almost a whole gigahertz of processing power then!

get the white. then you can stick any colour skin you like on it. and change clours every month too if thats suits your style. coloured skins dont look good on a black base.

have really deliberated on whether to go xp or linux. For 8gb more, and then end up installing xp for eventual use over linux, knocking off some of that 8gb, doesn't really make too much sense to me. At most perhaps, the face-value attraction is of having 8GB more and linux+XP combo where I would end up only using one.
Just bought my black version of xp 12gb (looks identical to my black asus 12.1 inch I bought 3 yrs ago)...looking forward to it in a few days time. I don't fancy skin changing anyway...
Will leave my user review in a week's time.

Rory, any news on the chipset/proc combo? Hope they upgraded that too (preferably to the intel atom setup)
