Asus SplashTop: Zero to Internet in 10 seconds

If you're anything like us, you'll have to wait an age for your laptop or desktop PC to boot into Windows -- particularly after you've been bogging it with pointless freeware. But there's good news -- a company called Device VM has been demonstrating SplashTop technology at CES, which will let you surf the Web in less than 10 seconds after hitting the power button.

The technology was demonstrated in a series of Asus laptops, and it works phenomenally well. You simply hit the SplashTop button, and after about 8-9 seconds, a Linux-based graphical user interface loads, from which you can fire up a Firefox-based Internet browser and surf at will.

SplashTop also lets you do common operating system tasks such as watch DVD movies, listen to music, view images, send instant messages, and all the common day-to-day tasks we normally rely on Windows to perform.

SplashTop will be available in a range of Asus laptops later in 2008, but you can get it right now on your desktop PC if you buy one of the following six motherboards. It's available in the P5E3 Deluxe WiFi, P5E3 Premium, M3N-HT Deluxe/Mempipe, M3N-HT Deluxe/HDMI, M3N-H/HDMI, and M3N-HD/HDMI.
