Asus Eee PC: £199 Linux laptop
Tags: laptop, inch, windows xp, asus
Asus has been eating the innovation cookies again. Not content with releasing punchable, scratch-proof monitors, the Taiwan-based company has unveiled a £199 laptop known as the Eee PC 701.
The 'Eee' signifies "easy to learn, easy to play, easy to work". It's a half-UMPC, half-laptop hybrid which measures 225x35x165mm and weighs a paltry 690g. Its 7-inch display looks similar to the one on the Asus R2H Ultra-Mobile PC, but there's also a 10-inch version planned -- good news for the short-sighted.
The Eee PC is based on Intel's Classmate PC prototype -- the parallel effort to the One Laptop Per Child PC. It uses an 'old' Pentium M clocked at 900MHz, accompanied by 512MB of RAM. Other interesting specs include 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a 4GB, 8GB or 16GB solid-state hard drive, 56K modem, 10/100MB Ethernet, a 0.3-megapixel video camera and four USB ports -- that's more than many full-size laptops.
The Eee PC uses a Linux-variant operating system that is said to require only 15 seconds to boot. Windows XP has been omitted in order to cut costs, but Microsoft die-hards should note that the Eee PC can run Windows XP. It'll ship with Open Office, Firefox and Skype, plus you can install any number of other open-source applications.
We love this thing -- £199 for all that functionality? It puts £700 UMPCs in the shade, doesn't it? Asus hopes to sell around 700,000 units this year, and our name is on at least one of those. -Rory Reid
Update: A review of the Asus Eee PC 701 is now on the site

Can't wait to get one of these next month. I am hoping to put up some videos and pics of taking it apart, running other distros of linux on it and many more things. I have seen some sites saying up-to $250 for the unit, but still thats a crispy price for something so usefull.

If it is going to be £199 in the UK, sounds like another case of Rip Off Britain!!
At £100 (current $->£ exchange rate) I'd be buying one for myself and a few for family members as it would be ideal sitting on the coffee table for quick web-browsing but at £199 ($409), I'd sooner spend a bit extra and just get myself a more fully functional laptop.

I just bought the 4GB on Thursday from Dabs.com - they have it for £218.99 and free delivery. Looked in the US as going there next week but couldn't see it for under $400+
so works out about the same.
Had a couple of problems to start with - the webcam icon was missing so couldn't use it. Also found it had been shipped with webcam disabled. Easy to go to Bios to enable it but still no icon. Then I noticed a couple more of the icons had mysteriously disappeared. So I started up holding F9 and then chose restore to factory settings.
When it started up everything was working fine and all icons in place.
Been using it today and it truly is a great little travel companion. I have two other laptops - An Acer Aspire 3630 and a Dell 11" - both of which weigh a ton. This is under 2lbs - it is just like carrying a text book with you. I am looking forward to using it on my upcoming trip to USA.

I am short sighted and with arthritic arms; waiting for the 10" model - may be (hoping) out early 2008. Allasus.com is taking preorders for the 7" model (toy !!!) @ $250 retail, out in Sept-07.

$/£200 with a solid state hard drive is fantastic. I imagine with the specs quoted the battery life would be excellent. As the previous commenter said at $100 I'd totally get a couple but at £200 I'd be more tempted to pay a bit extra for a fully speced laptop even if it is "just for the wife"

Hello, I'm very concerned about the price. How will British Business survive. Everyone will being sending off to the US to get the Asus eee at half the price. Then where will we be?
André SinclairThu 2 August, 2007 12:24pm
Has anyone been able to confirm this price so far? If it does come in here at £199, I won't be getting one, £100 would be coll, think £150 would be tipping point.
Just looked on the web, one well known site has a full laptop from a major manufacturer for sale for £300!!

Yeah, why should we always have to pay double the American prices for all these types of goods. Why should Europeans always have to foot the bill, so that the US, Asia, and just about everywhere else on the planet can have lower prices than us?
I also read about these $199 machines, it's not fair that these multinational companies rip us off like this. UKP 199 = $400 USD. That's double. How long are we going to put up with it? Who makes these decisions?
What a ripoff, especially for a product that's supposed to be aimed at people who can't afford expensive laptops. What a bunch of t******. You could buy a Dell desktop for cheaper.

I found the ASUS EeePC 701 7" but not the 10" version anywhere. Price tag in Holland is 199 Euro for the 7" with Xandros Linux. I'd prefer Liux Suse on the 10". Has anyone experience with Suse on this Asus ?

I've found the allasus website where you can pre-order for the US. Does anyone know where we can pre-order for UK? I'd like one b4 Xmas and i keep hoping it's gonna be below £200!..

How easy would it be to replace the operating system, and how would one do that without using CDs or DVDs? I want to run solaris.
AnonymousSat 24 November, 2007 10:00am

It looks incredible! - It comes out just before my birthday too.
My only concern is how it will be possible to put XP on it if it doesnt have a CD drive...
AnonymousThu 6 September, 2007 12:36am
Why on earth would you want to put XP on this if it is running a stable operating system? OK it may be outisde your comfort zone but learn, go to your local linux user group. Network this laptop to your XP Desktop and use synergy http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/ so you can drag and drop between the two computers. Linux is a complete bugger to connect to the Internet but otherwise so stable and realtively so fast per functionality to Windoze.

Do none of you understand?
the $199 version is the bottom spec, 2gb memory, 256 ram....its $400 for the same spec as the UK version which at £200 is the 4gb with 512mb ram! (or if were lucky the 16gb solid state!)
Ill be purchasing one when it out! Yeah i can buy a ok spec laptop for £300 but its no where near and portable and evidently spanking as this is!!!
AnonymousSat 27 October, 2007 8:18pm
oes anyone have any idea when this is going to be available? The last release from Asus seemed to suggest late Sept/early Oct - but clearly that date has passed and there's still no sign! Doe sthis suggest it's such poor quality it'll be more trouble than it is possibly worth??

My one had the same problem with the webcam, the link to it was simply missing. I followed the same procedure as above though, and now everything is absolutely fine. It's a great machine, perfect for the daily commute to university as carrying my larger 15" Asus laptop became tiresome. This is the perfect lecture companion,

What a joke, for $400 you can get a better system on Ebay, or a new Acer!! They will probably sell over the estimated 700,000 because people in general are dumb when it comes to computers. IF YOU ARE THINKING OF BUYING ONE, PLEASE READ: Go to Ebay and get an IBM T22 or T23, the specs are close to the same, except the thinkpad will have a bigger HDD. They can take a kids beating as well and still work.
AnonymousSat 12 January, 2008 6:10pm
Oh, yeah, and the IBM Thinkpad has a freakin disc drive as well. This think is a real joke.
AnonymousFri 15 February, 2008 4:26pm
Lot's of people commenting about price, you try and find a umpc for £219ish pounds, yeah it has no cd/dvd drive, an exteranl these day being about £30 all in all £250ish pounds for a umpc sounds like a bargain, think this will be my next purchase, my only grumble is the winlux os as it is not true open source.

The Asus EEE looks great for what I use my main computer for. I record my voice and videos with my external mic and video recorder, but it is a hassle to get a decent microphone and video camera to record my singing. So far I've heard from my friend in America who has one of these EEEs, and she has sent me a reording of Hushabye Mountain, and it is absolutely brilliant quality!

Battery Life of 2.5 hours not sufficient for mobile use. Otherwise OK, if SSD can be upgraded later.

i just bought one of these and i can tell you its amazing. i have to choose between the asus now and my macbook, i choose this often. the operating system is awesome, anyone could use this, even if they had no previous pc or internet skills, its even easier than mac os x, that does not though mean its better. if your wondering about this then know that it is well good,

'everyone' - It is called value added tax (VAT), you egit! Does America or the rest of the world have NHS etc...?
AnonymousSun 1 June, 2008 9:42pm
They are bunch of greedy sods just trying to make as much money out of people in the UK. £199 is far too much and only people with more money than sense would buy it. It would be so much better to pay an extra £100 and buy a laptop with higer spec.

Hi,
the Asus Webpage says 199$ for the 7" version of the EEE! Where is your price from?
