Zepto Znote 6615WD: a Viking's laptop

Laptops

Scandinavia rocks. Sweden's famous for its adult entertainment, Denmark gave us kick-ass bacon and Norway invented the paper clip, the humble device that kept our world in order in the dark days before the Internet.

That last one's hard to top, but Denmark has gone a giant leap further than pigs flesh and sent us its Znote 6615WD, from the country's biggest laptop manufacturer Zepto.

On first impressions, this Viking laptop didn't exactly rape and pillage our fancy. It's a sort of greyish, beigeish colour and left us wishing Asus hadn't taken back its bright yellow Lamborghini VX1, or that Sony hadn't taken out a restraining order against us for the attempted kidnapping of its Vaio TX2.

Still, there's a reason for its lack of sexiness -- it's cheap as chips and is actually rather powerful. 'Value', 'Power' and 'Extreme' versions are available, all of which use dual-core processors. Zepto sent us the Extreme model, which has a 15.4-inch screen running at a high resolution of 1,680x1,050 pixels, a 2GHz Intel Core Duo T2500 CPU, 1GB of RAM and a GeForce Go 7600 graphics card.

As a result, the dodgy-looking Zepto is a real goer, and is a cheap date at only £1,045. But we don't think it's cheap enough. We've seen more stylish laptops with similar specifications for the same price, and the Zepto doesn't even come with an operating system -- the humble Windows XP Home will set you back an extra £59. Boo!

We're off to give it a thorough once-over, so watch for a full review shortly. -RR
