Should I see Avengers Assemble in 3D?

I donned my superhero cape and 3D specs to check out Avengers Assemble, the new film featuring Earth's mightiest heroes, The Avengers. Is it worth seeing in 3D?

Based on the Marvel Comics characters, Avengers Assemble sees leather-coated Samuel L Jackson recruit a roll call of superheroes when a powerful energy source is stolen, or somesuch. The Avengers are supersoldier Captain America, super spies Black Widow and Hawkeye, flippant philanthropist Tony Stark who suits up as Iron Man, brilliant scientist with rage issues Bruce Banner, who hides the Incredible Hulk inside, and Thor, the Norse god who puts the Pantene in pantheon.

I have to admit I had my doubts about uniting all these characters on screen. In a comic you can get away with a colourful cast of far-fetched superfolk pootling about in flying aircraft carriers and biffing aliens, because the medium just lends itself to gleeful, overblown ludicrousness. Suspension of disbelief isn't an issue the way it is in a film, which needs to be more grounded to sell itself.

And even setting aside the issue of whether we believe in all these colourful characters, there's just so many of them. But in the artful hands of Joss Whedon -- himself a comics veteran, as well as creator of Firefly and Buffy -- each character gets something to do.

So the cumulative ridiculousness is grounded by Whedon's deft sketching of each character with their own problems, their own agendas -- and their fair share of zinging lines. In fact the whole thing is surprisingly funny, keeping things light rather than getting too bogged down in geeky detail.

Hulk smash

But despite the even-handed treatment of the main cast, Robert Downey Jr inevitably steals the show -- until the Hulk shows up, that is. We're finally treated to a decent outing for the big green smashing machine, and even though he's still a little rubbery in the CGI department, he provides many of the film's best moments. As the Hulk's human side, Mark Ruffalo's assured turn shows no trace that he's the new boy among the cast.

The only weak link is Hawkeye, Jeremy Renner's master archer. As the only Avenger we haven't met before -- aside from a brief cameo in Thor -- we have little empathy for his plight when he's turned to the dark side just moments after we meet him.

Avengers in action

Fortunately, the crowded cast actually benefits and adds to the action. The action-packed set pieces are a joy to watch as we follow each character using their different skills in different aspects of each scrap. CGI often makes characters look weightless and unrealistic -- especially the dull rent-an-alien-horde in the final showdown -- but here it's less off-putting than the uninvolving and hard-to-follow CGI slugfests that end most previous Marvel outings.

Should I see it in 3D?

You'd think 3D would be perfect for a larger-than-life film like this, but the 3D element is curiously undercooked. There's barely any sense of depth during non-action scenes -- which is a shame, as there are a couple of flashes of how good 3D can be when used in an understated and thoughtful way. These moments include Hawkeye as an isolated figure standing in the back of a gunship, giving us a sense of scale as he flies towards the S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier, and Captain America running into a damaged engine room now yawning open to the sky.

In fact, my favourite 3D effect involved an evil scientist talking from behind a translucent plastic curtain, which had a real feeling of depth and added a sinister dimension to an otherwise relatively insignificant scene.

There are a lot of reflections adding subtle depth to scenes, including a scene where Downey Jr and Ruffalo get emotional through a transparent touchscreen. 3D movies sure do love their holographic user interfaces!

Unusually, I'd have liked more gimmicky 3D. Sure, I usually tire quickly of gimmicky shots of stuff flying towards me  -- but when the stuff flying towards me is Scarlett Johansson sprinting out of an explosion pursued by a roaring Incredible Hulk, how could I not want to see that in three dimensions?

At least you can watch in 2D without being put off by stuff that's clearly meant for 3D audiences. But while 3D doesn't add much, if you do choose the 2D option, you're missing out on a treat: the Hulk hulking out in 3D.

Avengers Assemble is in cinemas now in 2D and 3D. I saw the film at Cineworld, where if you book online you get 10 per cent off -- and pay no booking fees.

What did you think of the Avengers movie? Is it the best comic book movie ever, or an overcrowded mess? What 3D movies are you looking forward to? Assemble your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

I've only experienced Imax at the Science Museum in London, very impressive... SO looking forward to seeing this on the (incredibly) big screen... Hopefully the (original) Star Wars trilogy will make it's way there...

i saw at Bluewater on Saturday in 3D not because i wanted to be out of necessity as the 2D screenings were sold out. Some of the 3D scenes were pretty good so i would say use your own judgement

Don't worry, Anonymous, this review is spoiler-free! If you're referring to the mention of Hawkeye turning bad, don't worry - that happens in the first five minutes

Er... Rich... it doesn't flipping matter if something happens in the first 5 mins or in the last 5, I'd managed not to find out about it, until I've just read this article on your increasingly poor website (Hello Luke!) and very much counts as a spoiler. No one in the press, when reviewing Scream at the time, mentioned the fate Drew Barrymore suffers but by your logic telling everyone wouldn't have detracted from the impact the scene has in the movie. Your arrogance is a major turn off, consider this the straw, as a follower also of your social media sites, I'll be removing my support.

And apologies to those that haven't seen Scream. You really should, it's very good. Drew Barrymore dies in the first 5 mins, but we have little empathy for her plight.

Didn't mean to ruin the first 5 minutes for you, party_chancer. Hope you enjoy the other 135 minutes

It was an awesome movie. You asked if it's the best comic based movie? In my opinion The Dark Knight is, but The Avengers comes close at second!

I have to agree that the 3D was underused, though I believe it wasn't filmed with the intention of being 3D and was converted later, so perhaps Whedon wasn't taking that into consideration (I may be wrong). There were a few good sweeping shots of the sets that came off brilliantly in 3D (if inadvertently) and I think it's under-use really helped the film to not appear gimmicky.

Even so, there were so many Whedon-isms in direction, camera angles and dialogue that he probably wouldn't be paying much attention to shooting 3D-fodder anyway.

Doesn't matter if you know or don't know the history of Hawkeye, a spoiler is a most heinous act. Re-read the article, there's way more than one spoiler in there anyway. And even if there was only one it would be way too many. There's an unwritten rule passed down since the dawn of the silver screen that you just don't give away any plot details to those who have not watched said film. If you do then you are, justifyingly, forever labelled a w*nker. E.g. Richard Madeley revealing the plot behind 'Sixth Sense' live on daytime tv. What is it with people called Rich?

After the spoiler about Hawkeye, I stopped reading before you gave any more away.

Some don't care but I do.

Sorry I happened upon the article.

Agree with others commenting on spoiler...some of us have fond memories of Hawkeye from the comics, to let the cat out of the bag in an article that is supposed to be about whether it is worth watching in 3D is asinine. Was this your first time writing an article? Seems someone in the industry would know better, heck I know better and That is just based on common sense.

Just saw the movie in 3D. I usually avoid 3D movies because they usually leave me with a headache. The Avengers was so long that it left me with a headache AND fuzzy vision after the movie. For someone who usually has 20/20 vision, that was disturbing. I don't think 3D added anything to the movie--not even in the "hulk out" scenes Rich mentioned. If 3D messes with your eyes/head like mine, I totally recommend the 2D version; you won't miss out on anything in 2D.

All things considered, I give The Avengers 3 out of 5 stars. It wasn't what I expected, but I enjoyed the superhero interaction, and I finally liked a movie Hulk as much as the TV series and comic Hulks (for me, a good movie Hulk was the best part of this movie). The biggest problem the movie had was that the main conflict/villain seemed almost...like an aside. First of all, the cast of heroes was so large that half of the movie had to be dedicated to reintroducing all of the players and proving to skeptics that they all were equally-necessary members of the Avengers team. I'm still not convinced that Black Widow or Hawkeye were necessary, but that was the most entertaining part of the movie IMO, so I didn't mind the intros. Second, even with an alien army behind him, it was a little hard to believe that it took that many superheroes to defeat Loki. Impending doom/destruction just never really registered for me, and I think it didn't register for the filmmakers either, which is why they included *spoiler alert* an extra, Earthly threat...but still, even that didn't strike enough fear in the hearts of the audience. Overall, I came away from the movie thinking that a sequel will be better. The introductions will have already been made, and the filmmakers will try to outdo the first movie visually, action-wise, and villain-wise. All of that will make for a better movie.

You will "try and be more sensitive about spoilers in future"?

Better idea, why don't you just take the spoilers out before you spoil it for even more people. If you had taken them down after the first complaint then you wouldn't have spoiled it for other people, myself included. If Whedon thought that it was a good idea for people to know Hawkeye turned to the dark side before they saw the movie, he would have put it in the trailer. How about you stop apologizing and just fix it before someone else who doesn't want to read that line reads it... And how about next time you write a review you think at least a little bit about what you are putting in there... Or just stop reviewing movies, because quite frankly anyone who doesn't know enough about movie reviews to avoid putting spoilers in there doesn't need to be reviewing them in the first place.

And before you or anyone else says "its only the first five minutes" or "it isn't really a spoiler"... That is your opinion. Obviously other people think it is. Just because you don't think it matters doesn't mean that it doesn't. Some people genuinely like knowing as little as possible about movies before they see them, and to those people this is definitely a spoiler.

I wish this guy would have stuck to the subject of the article rather than spoiling the movie. Thanks a lot, journalism at its finest.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 9 May, 2012 06:09

My god people leave the poor guy alone! I thought it was a well written review and if one is THAT sensitive to the slightest spoiler then mayhap one shouldnt search for movie reviews that are bound to contain a few tidbits. Chill the heck out!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 11 May, 2012 00:52

I didn't come to this article for a movie review, I came for what it says on the tin: should I see the Avengers in 3D? I didn't ask for anything else, not the moments of action that happen and certainly the hell not Hawkeye's fate.

Seriously, this is ******* ridiculous and it should either be labeled as containing spoilers, or, I don't know, take out the ******* spoilers! It doesn't matter if I'm seeing the movie in an hour or a week, I'd stayed spoiler-free (and I roll around in tumblr) right up until this moment and I think it's a disservice to everyone that's tried the same until they had the misfortune of coming here to get a simple answer to a simple question.

PS: I still don't know whether I want to see it in 3D or not for the kicker.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 12 May, 2012 20:07

You spoiler drama queens are some sensitive *******. If reading a throwaway line like that upsets you so much, you clearly have no idea of the REAL evils of the world waiting for you out there. Grow-up, sack-up, and stop being such whiny crybabies. My God.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 28 May, 2012 12:26

Ignoring the spoiler ramblings and getting back to the 2D / 3D issue, if you find the glassess uncomfortable and keep taking them on and off as I do, then you'll realise that only a small proportion of the film is in 3D at all. It's a 2D film with a few mintes doctored for the 3D effect.
