LinkTheater DVD player: Buffalo's bison

These days, if all a DVD player can do is spin those movie discs, we just don't have time for it. We've been tantalising you with players that support DivX, DVD recorders with hard drives and Denon's ultimate all-format disc player. If you've still not made the upgrade, you might want to invest in the Buffalo LinkTheater, a DVD player that will jump onto your home network over Wi-Fi and stream your media across to your TV.

Yep, this new piece of convergent technology is the halfway house between DVD dullsville and a media centre metropolis. Sure, it'll play all your DVDs and DivX movies, but if you have some MP3s sitting on your computer, then you can stream them over a wireless or wired network. You want more? Try full progressive scan outputs and high-definition support for DivX HD and WMV HD. Sweet.

All you Mac-heads out there will be disappointed there's no support for OS X -- the LinkTheater prefers Microsoft Windows 98SE and above. We wonder if a PC peripheral manufacturer will be able to match the big boys on AV performance, but if this is going to be the future of DVD players, we'll let you know in our full review soon. -GC
