Remember that Buffalo all-in-one wonder box that we looked at only last week? Well, something very similar has landed today in the shape of the KiSS DP-558. We were so impressed with this DVD player/hard drive recorder/network media player when we saw it at Berlin's IFA electronics show that we got straight on the blower to the strangely named Danish company to freight us a fresh model for our delectation.
So here it is, what does it do? Well, the real question is what doesn't it do? It'll play all your DVDs and spurt them out via high-tech component outputs. It'll record TV to its internal 80GB hard drive. It'll stream your DivX movies, pictures and music from your computer across a network cable. It'll download a TV guide, check the weather and upgrade itself, all from the Internet. In fact, once you've played with this box, it'll be hard for you to go back to a normal DVD player.
All these cool features might sound like the DP-558 is a media centre PC without the PC part, but don't go throwing that Microsoft box out of the 'Window' just yet. KiSS' player isn't that powerful, and the more eagled-eyed among you will have noticed this is a DVD player, not a recorder, so you can't archive your episodes of 24 that easily. However, KiSS does have a trick up its sleeve: you can access all your recordings from a computer and if you have the right software, edit out all the advert breaks. We'll find if this really could be the best DVD player ever in a full upcoming review. -GC
