Samsung to launch first Blu-ray player

The BD-P1000 will be the first Blu-ray player to market this year, Seungsoo Park of the Digital AV Division for Samsung has announced.

The BD-P1000 is set to land in September for around £800, following a launch in the US in May for $1,000 (£580). The player will support 720p and 1080i high-definition playback, as well as backwards compatibility with DVD and CD formats.

Blu-ray discs will come in 25GB and 50GB sizes, which is enough to store a movie in high definition as well as more interactive bonus content. Samsung's player will also come with a memory card reader to play MP3 and JPEG files from SD, MMC and MemoryStick media, among others.

Crave sat down with Samsung's AV Division vice president Seungsoo Park to discuss all things high definition, and he said that being the first to release a player alongside the films was a major consideration for the company.
