Panasonic SCHT880: Tall boy home cinema
The Panasonic SCHT880 is a home-cinema system for the big boys. It combines a pure 1000W of power across its 5.1 speaker system, with one of the biggest subwoofers we've seen. Straddling this pure thoroughbred like a jockey is the DVD system, which will play back every single disc format going, including Panasonic's own DVD-RAM recordable discs.
In this collection of sound-blasting equipment, the balance of power is weighted firmly in the favour of the sub and the centre speaker, which offer 260W each. In comparison, the measly rear speakers, which are named 'tall-boy' by Panasonic, offer only 70W each. If you're watching a movie like Saving Private Ryan, it'll feel like you've got a full-on invasion from the front, compared to a light skirmish behind you. Nonetheless, the system will fit in well with any modern AV setup not only in terms of style, but its progressive-scan video output will service any flat-screen TV perfectly. As long as you can find somewhere to hide the huge subwoofer, all four satellite speakers have matching silver stands -- a nice touch.
The asking price for this big box of tricks? A mere £400. Not bad if you ask us, but we'll find out if it's worth the money in our full review later this month. -GC
