ViaMichelin X-950: Hit the road, Jacques

ViaMichelin was surrounded by Garmin and TomTom at this year's CeBIT, but it managed to hold its own thanks to the new X-950 sat-nav system. It has all the usual features, with a voice-guided map system that should take you from Land's End to John O'Groats without a hitch. It's a slinky system, designed to be taken out of the car when you reach your destination. Its unique feature is that it comes with integrated Michelin guides.

The Michelin guide has listings for restaurants, entertainment and local points of interest, and the X-950 applies them all to the maps. The device has a battery so you can carry it around and use it instead of a guidebook to find the zoo.

We had a hands-on with the brand-new device at CeBIT, and it successfully picked up all the nearby Hanover restaurants. Brilliantly, the system even had telephone numbers to book a table, and -- best of all -- the menus, so we could plan our meal in advance.

The X-950 is launching in May in the UK, although exact prices are yet to be announced. -GC
