British firm White Knight has launched two low carbon tumble dryers that run on gas rather than electricity. Environmentalists argue that dryers are the work of the devil because of their energy-guzzling ways, but this new Eco Tumble Dryer duo may appease greenies and please families drowning under wet clothes.
Since natural gas has relatively low carbon emissions compared to the UK's predominantly coal-generated electricity, the Eco Tumble Dryers have a carbon footprint around half that of conventional electric dryers.
Using gas doesn't just mean the machines are greener. The 7kg Eco43A and Eco83A are also cheaper to run, thanks to the price of gas tariffs. Which? magazine reckons an electric model used every other day costs £95 a year to run, while a gas one should cost just £38.
It's worth noting the machines aren't entirely electricity-free. The natural gas is used to heat the air and dry your togs -- around 90 per cent of the machine's energy use -- but a small amount of electricity is used to turn the drum. Of course, if you want to be ultra low carbon you'll buy the greenest tumble dryer of them all: a clothes horse.
White Knight is unusual by virtue of being British company that actually manufactures products, but it also has a good green track record. in 2003, it was the first company to launch an A-rated tumble dryer.
