While there's no government mandate on the future introduction of energy monitors, industry trade body the UK Energy Retail Association has been calling for a timetable for deployment of smart meters -- montiors capable of two-way communication with utility companies.

Ofgem and four energy companies are piloting the meters in 18,000 homes. Results of the experiment -- including feedback on the durability of the devices, consumer acceptance and how the meters affect consumption -- are expected in 2010.
