Photos: Oxford's revolutionary horizontal tidal turbines

A new tidal turbine design hopes to slash the cost of green energy generated by the sea. Engineered by Oxford University, the new tidal generators eschew the conventional underwater wind turbine shape (pictured above middle) in favour of a horizontal 'tube' (above right).

The team behind the new tidal generator estimates the manufacturing costs of its design are 60 per cent lower than existing devices. Let's take a closer look at Oxford's next generation turbine over the following pages.
