Photos: Hi-tech solar innovations

The University of California is expecting to plug its 'solar trees' into the grid within weeks. The 164-kilowatt installation is part of a larger campus sustainability initiative, which includes another solar parking lot. By installing the solar canopies, the university will reduce its electricity cost by $43,000 a year and reduce its carbon pollution by more than 80,000 pounds.
