Imagine a phone that tracks your movements and -- with a touch of a button -- shows you how to green your car journeys by taking public transport instead. If a team of five Canadian guys get their way, you won't have to imagine any longer. They've created Eco2go, a carbon-cutting mobile phone app designed for upcoming phones running on Google's Android operating system.
Eco2go's at concept stage right now, but it's already been voted one of the 50 most exciting bits of software for Android.
Here's the theory on how it'd work. The software runs in the background of your phone, tracking your travels. When you ask, it'll then show your recent car journeys and suggest public transport alternatives for each route -- if there is one. You'll also be able to see tips online from other Eco2go users. Finally, it'll calculate the carbon emissions you've created and suggest you offset 'em.
It's not clear yet which offset companies Eco2go would partner with and how the tracking would work. GPS is possible, but using masts would require the networks' co-operation, which is unlikely.
You'll have to wait a while to try it out, too. Andrew Lim, mobile phone expert over on our sister site CNET.co.uk, guesstimates Android-powered phones aren't likely to land in the UK 'til late 2008 or early 2009.
