Ecolectric eco toaster: Morphy Richards greens up your breakfast

Green Tech

First it was the Eco Kettle. Now the humble toaster has become the latest kitchen appliance to get an energy-saving makeover. Morphy Richard has launched the Ecolectric 2 Slice Toaster, a toaster with an auto-closing lid and a claimed 34 per cent reduction in electricity consumption. Check out the video of the lid below.

If the toaster really does use a third less energy than a conventional model, I'll be impressed. A lid seems an odd way to save energy since toasters 'toast' bread primarily using radiation heat transfer (like a radiator). I'll test the Ecolectric toaster first-hand with SmartPlanet's 'Marmite Monday' team and let you know.

Aside from the lid and the energy-saving, this looks like the sort of average toaster you'd buy down Argos, replete with defrost and the usual settings. It earns extra greenie points for its recycled packaging.

The Morphy Richards Ecolectric 2 Slice Toaster is on sale for £35 now at Ethical Superstore and direct via Morphy Richards.
