8 tips to beat the British Gas fuel hikes

4. Look into solar thermal -- but don't bother 'til Christmas
Solar hot water heating is one of the oldest and most tried-and-tested ways of generating your own energy. Most systems will provide up to 60 per cent of a home's hot water needs over a year. In summer, they'll likely provide all your hot water needs.

When shopping around for a system, follow the golden tradesmen rule of getting at least three different quotes. Expect to pay £3,000-5,000; everyone from big names like British Gas to old veterans such as Solar Twin offer installations. Pick a system that's compatible with the Low Carbon Buildings Programme, which offers £400 off solar hot water systems.

To make the most of next spring's sunshine and free hot water, factor in a three-month wait for getting a system installed.
