8 tips to beat the British Gas fuel hikes

3 Insulate your loft and cavity (already!)
I know these two are on every energy-saving list. But there's a good reason: they're easy and, even if you pay someone to install it for you, you'll make your cash back within five years. After that, the average home will be saving £100+ a year (a figure likely to rise given the way gas prices are going).

If you're over 70 or on certain benefits, you can get your loft insulated for free -- just give your utility company a call. Everyone else should use this grant-finder before splashing out.

Finally, if your priority's not just saving cash but cutting carbon too, make sure you read my comparison of the best low carbon insulation materials (including, yes, sheep's wool).
