8 tips to beat the British Gas fuel hikes

Green Tech

If, like me, your electricity and gas costs shot up 25 per cent yesterday, you're probably in the mood to stick it to The Man. Get started with these eight ways to cut your bills, increase your independence from the utility fat cats and insulate yourself from future price rises.

1. Call in the eco experts
If you live in London, you should look up the heavily subsidised Green Homes Concierge service. For £200, it'll send round eco experts to audit your house, write a custom report with recommendations and then help you with tradesmen for a full year afterwards. Watch the SmartPlanet video for the full lowdown.

Outside of London -- or if you just don't fancy laying down £200 -- get free advice from the Act on CO2 helpline for personalised tips from a real human being. The number's 0800 512 012.

2. Get radiator reflectors and boosters
Sure, keeping heat in your house is vital. But how about ensuring the heat circulates in the right places, so you feel the heating and use it less? For starters, try the £20 putting insulated foil behind radiators. It's simple, but reduces the amount of heat going straight through your wall.
