Xbox 360 Kinect vs PlayStation Move vs Nintendo Wii: Motion-control mash-up

Nintendo changed the face of gaming when it unleashed the Wii way back in the winter of 2006, pulling in multi-generational horde of new gamers, eager to shell out for the big N's pared-down, accessible fun. Skip forward to the present day, and in the run-up to Christmas both Microsoft and Sony are hawking their own nifty motion-gaming wares -- Kinect for Xbox 360 and PlayStation Move respectively.

But which of these three motion marvels deserves your hard-earned pennies this year? We've played extensively with all three and present our findings here.

Nintendo Wii

When it launched four years ago, the Wii was lambasted for its bizarre remote-style controllers and frankly hilarious name. An astonishing 74 million sales later however, and the Wii has not only snuck into just about every living room in the western world, it's made Nintendo enough money to purchase the entire solar system. Affordable, and so simple to use that your Nan could humiliatingly trash your high scores in under five minutes, the Wii is the motion-gaming system to beat.

Microsoft Xbox Kinect

If Nintendo shook things up by removing most of the buttons from its controller, Microsoft has gone one step further by scrapping the controller altogether. Kinect is powered entirely by your own body -- monitored by a sophisticated array of cameras mounted in a black bar that sits under your telly, you'll be flailing your way up the leaderboards in no time at all. Kinect doesn't hit the UK until 10 November, but we've given the hardware a thorough test.

Sony PlayStation Move

Sony's motion-gaming effort takes the idea the Wii made popular -- waggling a remote -- and skews it in a new direction. Move operates slightly differently to the Wii and like Kinect is able to deliver motion-gaming thrills in glorious HD. The PlayStation is also probably in the best position to bring motion-gaming to the hardcore market, something that could potentially prove very lucrative.

We're all about the technology here at CNET UK, but which of these three gaming systems brings the coolest tech to the table?

The Nintendo Wii blew our tiny minds when we first played with it -- we remember the childish delight with which we spun the Wii remote, observing how neatly the cute little Miis rotated along with our own movements. Despite the high-tech appearance, however, the Wii's motion-control system is deceptively simple. Hidden inside the Wii sensor bar (that grey thing that sits atop or under your telly) are ten infrared LEDs. A sensor inside the Wii remote is able to keep track of these sets of lights, and uses them to triangulate the remote's precise location.

This is then relayed to the Wii console wirelessly via Bluetooth. Inside each remote there's an accelerometer, and by attaching the Wii MotionPlus add-on, additional accuracy can be added courtesy of a tuning-fork gyroscope.

Move works on the same principle, but swaps a few bits around. With Sony's system, the sensor is the PlayStation Eye camera, and the infrared lights in the sensor bar are replaced by a great big luminous ball on top of each Move controller. The PlayStation Eye tracks the location of that glowing ball. The Move controller, like the Wii remote, is loaded with an accelerometer, but goes a step further by adding a gyroscope and a magnetometer, which monitors the controller's orientation against the Earth's magnetic field. Pretty cool stuff.

Kinect, however, blows both the Wii and the Move away in this field. Visually nothing more than a shiny black bar that plugs into the Xbox 360, Kinect sneakily houses three separate cameras. The one in the centre is an RGB model that identifies people standing in the playing area -- in front of the sensor bar. This camera distinguishes people from the background, so Kinect is able to track your entire body without getting the sofa in the picture too. It can track an impressive 20 points of articulation in each person.

Those other two cameras work in tandem to create a 3D image of the room, and your position in it. This means Kinect knows how far you are from the screen, and when you're rotating your body. We were highly impressed when tried this out. In terms of sheer technofoolery, Kinect blows our brains the furthest out of our ears.

Coolest Tech: Kinect

When the kids are going mental on Christmas morning, or when your friends are round and you have half an hour to fill before the pizza arrives, the inner gubbins of your gaming toys are the last thing on your mind. You want some proper fun. That means easy setup, and fast, frantic multiplayer action. But which system delivers?

The Wii has a pretty fiddly setup -- you'll need to cobble together all the Wii remotes strewn around your living room, as well as plug in the sensor bar, which has a needlessly long and tangle-prone cable.

Once everything's in place however, you won't have to wait long before multiplayer gaming can commence. The Wii has no trouble crowding four players round the telly at once for some arm-swinging action and each remote takes batteries rather than using an inaccessible, rechargable internal battery. As long as you have a steady stream of double-As to hand, nobody's left out.

Kinect is dead easy to set up -- you only need the Kinect sensor bar plugged into your Xbox 360 and you're good to go. There's a fatal flaw, however, when it comes to initiating multiplayer madness -- the games available at launch will only support two players. That could increase in the future, but the formality of switching places and taking turns is no substitute for crowding a bunch of baying crazies around your telly. One plus is that due to the intensely physical nature of the gameplay, Kinect will exhaust anybody playing, and is perfect for ritual humiliation.

Move's setup is pretty simple: just position the Eye and grab the Move controllers. Power is handled via internal rechargable batteries though, so if you forgot to plug in one of the controllers at the end of your last gaming session one of your friends will have to sit out. Not much fun!

Secondly, while Sony's offering supports four players simultaneously, when we reviewed Move we found it required a good deal of space to work properly. One game asked us to stand 2.5 metres away from the TV. Now bearing in mind you'll be waving your arms around like a loon, four people will need a good-sized room to play in, so it's not perfect for kids' bedrooms or cramped little student flats.

For simple, fast-paced fun, the Wii is still best. It gets four players huddled together furiously windmilling their arms with a minimum of fuss. Plus, as it's been out for years, the Wii boasts a huge back-catalogue of excellent games, such as the marvellous Wario Ware: Smooth Moves or Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Being new, games for Kinect and Move are thin on the ground, and will be more expensive too.

Best for Multiplayer: Wii

If you're shelling out for a new console and several controllers or cameras, you want to know you're getting decent value for money. Here's how effectively the different systems will empty your wallet.

You can grab a Kinect sensor bar plus Kinect Adventures, a Wii Sports-style minigame collection, for £130 when it launches in November. If you're starting from scratch you can buy it bundled with a 4GB Xbox 360 Slim for £250. That comes with one controller, though of course you won't need it for playing with Kinect.

Move is pricier. The PlayStation Eye camera will set you back £25, or you can buy the Eye plus one Move controller and a starter disc for £45. Additional Move controllers will retail at around £30, and the Navigation controller -- an optional extra controller that adds an analogue stick and several extra buttons -- will set you back about £25 each. You can currently preorder a 320GB PlayStation 3 Slim console with Move for £270 if you fancy bundling up.

The Wii is the cheapest of the three -- the Wii console with Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort and a MotionPlus controller will cost you somewhere around £180. Don't forget, though, you'll also need to buy three more Wii remotes and three more nunchuck peripherals to use the Wii at its full four-player capacity. Costing around £30 for a new controller and £15 for a new nunchuck, to get completely kitted out be prepared to spend around £300 or a little more.

We reckon in the long run Kinect is going to work out cheapest if you're starting from scratch, as you can have pretty much everything you need for £250, and in one box. The Xbox 4GB doesn't have much space for downloads and game demos, but if your primary focus is motion gaming, that probably won't bother you so much.

Affordability Winner: Kinect

We love the accuracy of Move, and the Wii will always hold a place in our hearts as the console that first got us jumping around like loonies, but we reckon Kinect is going to deliver the greatest gaming thrills this Christmas. It's a shame that at launch only two-player games will be available, but with easy setup, HD graphics and some really neat tech to boot, Kinect wins our hearts and minds.

Overall Winner: Kinect

There's a great deal we haven't covered in this article, so if you want more information we'd highly recommend checking out our Wii and Move reviews, and our in-depth preview of Kinect.

Uh huh.. and we're really excited about the idea of playing games like GT5 and Killzone 3 w/o a controller. Kinect will be cool for some stuff - but definitely not hard core games.

i dont think you can compare the kinect with these. Its a different type of system that is better for different games (family games or whatever). Whereas the move is better for say shooting games or driving games because you have a controller, same goes for wii. Although i do believe the move is a lot better then the wii now.

Also at what point does the category 'coolest tech' come in ahead of say build quality, ease of use, game lineup. Kinect is obviously going to win coolest tech that because its the only different one in terms of the tech used, move and wii are more or less the same, just the move is more accurate. But hell thats just my opinion on it.

Oh and also you could have compared the gaming packs that are going to be available such as bundles etc.

I dont think kinect should be the winner, its very limited in the type of games that can be made for it.

kinect may seem the more impressive toy for now but in the long run I think it will die out...

Didn't EA just make a statement that Sony is likely to overtake the UK market? This article is on CNET UK.... I smell Microsoft's hand in this article... Don't you????

Why in the world would you play GT5 or Killzone 3 with any motion controller, let alone the Move? Have you tried playing games with the Move? It is barely better than the Wiimote.

Bad bad article! How much did Microsoft pay CNET for this? Wait for the Android vs iOS vs WinMO 7 article in a month or so.

Giving Kinect the winning slot even though it hasn't been released yet ?! That's clever Luke.

Let's see if you still think the same in a few months time, when it becomes quite apparent to the whole world that attempting to play a 'proper' game without a physical controller is virtually impossible with Kinect's basic technology.

Move owners will be enjoying AAA titles with a greater level of control, while Kinect users will probably still be tiring themselves out just to get through a basic menu system for a game of 'Kids Party 360".

Microsoft are going to have egg on their faces when the consumers realise that the Kinect holds no ability to live up to the hype. Even the ageing Wii with it's SD graphics has more going for it.

This article has 'uneducated' written all over it.

as a ps3 owner i plan on the getting the move but the games atm dont live upto it. i also dont mind paying around 80 quid for navigation controller and the starter pack but then to hear that games like "the fight" and some events on sports champions that then require a additonal move controller is a set back
soo all in all
starterbundle about 40ish
extra move controller 30ish
a few games maybe around 90ish pounds
is it worth it?

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 29 September, 2010 07:55

@ the poster above - you're obviously not a real PS3 owner are you ?

Who told you that some events on Sports Champions 'require' an extra controller ? THEY DON'T !
You can use an extra controller for a better experience, but you most certainly don't 'need' one.

As for the games not living up to it, have you tried Resi 5 using the Move and Navigation controller yet ? Or Heavy Rain ? ......thought not.

Just another kid making assumptions on something before they've actually tested it out.

Just because something from microsoft won, all the ps3 fanboys go mad. Hilarious to watch.
They just can't accept their precious sony brand has been beaten. lol.

Obviously these systems are not for hardcore gaming, and Kinect is the more advanced technology, but Sony are pushing motion controllers forward. Good job for both of them. And that fighting game on ps3 looks pretty awsome.

Plus the fact that Sont is pushing 3-D which is also a cool tech, but nintendo seem to have better ideas at how to display 3D to the consumer. Looking forward to getting both of these systems in the near future.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 29 September, 2010 11:56

@above - it's nothing to do with being a 'fanboy' - posters here are just highlighting the fact that this article has been written with an obvious lack of experience and knowledge. As for these systems not being for hardcore gaming, the Move is the only system here which can accommodate intelligent control of both present and future fully fledged AAA titles by use of both motion control and physical controllers.

Microsoft have shot themselves in the foot by trying to be too clever, and in the process have limited themselves with the ability to only play relatively basic, party-style games using Kinect. They should've engaged their brains before hyping it up - funny how titles like Milo are now being described as 'just tech demos' by Microsoft bods, when initially it promised so much. They realise that putting it into practice is technically impossible !

Shameful that the creator of this article hasn't thought about any of the implications this limited technology will bring.....

to the person assuming im not a ps3 owner i do love my ps3 uncharted 2 is gotta be the best game ever! i didnt personally enjoy resident evil and ive got heavy rain allready and i preffer playing that type of game sitting down and not waving a wand in the air to make him brush his teeth i dont see why they havnt made a offical bundle that include the naivgation controller that WILL be needed for games like resident evil, socom etc i know you can you turn the controller i allready have sideways to play but thats just akward
but you missed the point . the expense of it all just to play a game like a wii game.

i will getone through but just not at the minute waiting for killzone 3 that might be worth it, hopefully by then the price will be dropped just a tad i would love to see and i think a lot of people would love to see a good lightsaber star wars game developed for the move that would be steal the show

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 29 September, 2010 21:48

I bought the starter kit with motion controller and camera as well as an extra motion controller and sports champions for £95 from play.com at launch which is all you need at the moment for multi player fun (you can even use the dual shock in place of the navigator if needed), and as far as I'm concerned its far superior to the wii due to the accuracy and kinect will be far too limited in its games due to lack of buttons.
So basically this article is wrong on price as 2 player move is cheaper than kinect if you already own the consoles and comparing the bundles with the consoles is ridiculous as you get a 3d blu ray player thrown in with the ps3 which is a massive bonus for very little more money as the move starter pack is currently bundled with the 320gb ps3 and a game for £285.
Also because of the superb accuracy and the fact you cant cheat as you can with the wii in terms of not moving around as much creates superbly tense multiplayer games that are every bit as challenging/ satisfying as the real thing.
In short the move beats them hands down, plus sony got there first with controllerless motion tech re: PS eye on ps2 which was great fun although obviously nowhere near as accurate as current tech.

thought the whole idea of playing console games was about sitting down chilling out and enjoying yourself not jumping up and down like a muppet lets face most people who are lets say a bit on the large side wont want to be doing to much exercise.the people who write most of the articles on this website must live on another planet get joe public of the street to review the games consoles i.e. some one who plays and knows what there chatting about.

I own all three consoles, so I'm pretty unbiased.

Kinect will probably put the Wii out of business party-games-wise, and then the Move will kick it while it's down with better graphics, far more accurate and easy to use.

Kinect will fail with the hardcore gamers. If you deny that, you are a fanboy. However, it's going to be a huuuuge hit with family and party games.
Move will... well it'll probably take off very well. We've already got great games putting it to good use.. (Killzone 3, Heavy Rain, GT5 and Resident Evil 5)
The Wii will suffer huge troop casualties, that will FINALLY send Nintendo back to the drawing board on creating a new console.

That's juts my opinion..

Kinect could be great, I enjoyed playing controller less gaming on my PS2's EYEtoy. They need to drop the 'contoller-less' side of it as they are missing out on the hardcore gamers. If they use Kinect along side the use of a Pad it could be excellent.

Although I own move myself, Im surprised that people are just labelling it as a 'copy wii-mote'. It seems way more than that. The move has given me my first experience of literally reaching into a game (Tumble) and using real skill (table tennis).
Where as I loved tennis on the Wii but it really is just gesture/reaction based, where the move you have to move around to hit the shots, if you gesture you will miss, you have to move to the ball. I loved the Heavy rain demo, and also believe MAG & other FPS's will in fact be easier to use the move instead of the DS pad.

I'm really looking forward to 'The Fight', it could be the best game ever. It could also be a big let down, but I have my fingers crossed on that one.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 October, 2010 15:27

how could kinect possibly win on price? wii obviously wins... and of course move wins overall because its the most accurate, cheaper than connect if you dont have as many people playing, you can have four players if you want, and it has a shiny ball at the end! what more can you want?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 19 October, 2010 18:14

Yeah, PS3 Move does look good, but is just copying it's old mate, the 'eyetoy' and stealing idea's from Nintendo's Wii.

Kinect, is just a whole new idea, may look like it does what an 'eyetoy' used to do, but is far more superior in how it works, and picks up all of your motion, not just your hands.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 19 October, 2010 21:57

Kinect = Great concept ( weather it will work for the mass market, lets just wait an see)
Move = Am improvement on the wiimote

You can not compare these two types of controllers, there both aimed at a different market, kinect, family based fun. Move an all rounder, however no where as near as intresting as kinect.

The Xbox 360 Kinect looks Fantastic.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 21 October, 2010 19:22

Screw that! Not a fair review in any way.

On the price one, lets pick a 4gb xbox and a 320GB PS, the biggest hard drive of the lot!!!
To make it fair lets add the xbox's biggest hard drive available. A 250GB hard drive will cost £69.99 from GAME add that to the 4gb xbox (£139.97 from Argos) and you have £209 plus change. Fair enough the 320gb playstation is £270 but your still getting 70gb more!!!!

Missed out online play cost on the xbox, £40 a year if I remember correctly, and a quick gloss over the fact the 2 wii controllers plus numchuck (which you have to have) will cost you £90 two Moves will cost 60.

Agree with the multiplayer result but not their logic, you need space for the wii and you need the same space for the playstation.

Coolest tech is fair enough Kinect is a nice bit of kit, a couple of techy issues but we'll see. But I'm not seeing the amount of quality games that the wii has

Sorry guys I think you made that fit your own opinion.

From what I've seen, Kinect plays pretty much like my EyeToy does which I bought 7 years ago. And unlike the Kinect, the EyeToy and game cost me just £40! I still can't believe the Kinect is £130. I know someone who thinks its a bargain, but the most I feel its worth is £60-£70.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 1 November, 2010 19:11

All you idiots that say this copies the Eyetoy, you are a complete moron. It uses three separate cameras to control FULL 360 motion and measures depth height and width. It doesn't just put your image on screen attempt to lineup to the corresponding images, it measures every joint and 100% accurately control motion in a 1:1 ratio. I have played it and with already 5+ hardcore titles coming out in 2011 which will show just how it will work with hardcore titles.

As for the "THE FIGHT" it has gotten absolutely horrid reviews and is a gigantic flop, as we will see with future move games. So you guys enjoy your dildos and I'll enjoy the future.

Fanboys... hilarious. Almost as amusing as MaI had the same problem with my update not wanting to download... first it complained about my connection to xbox live... check the network connection. Then when I checked it, it had to install the update to actually run the test. Connected fine to my network though.

I think the Kinect will be great fun, and personally I am looking forward to the "Wii fit" style games and the dance games, as well as just browsing for movies online and if they actually do release that Star Wars game etc.

The PS Move seem like what I WISHED the Wiimote was like... except looks wise. It does look like a lollypop.
Tried one out and it was really accurate and truly great fun to use.

Wii... I am sorry, but it just looks so damned DATED, graphics wise. Wii sports is still the best game for it.

As for the article, I think it was fair, though based on a multiplayer experience. I like my games mostly solitary, but I guess it will come in handy playing these types of games instead of being a controller short.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 4 November, 2010 10:32

eyetoy!? Kinect?? They are NOTHING alike! I toy only used ur image in the somewhat disgusting games, kinect uses ur body motion as a controller IT IS DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGY!

Im quite looking forward to nintendos nexy inovation, everyone seems to copy them, like PS3 controller, it is FACT that PS3 controller was not going to be motion until wii released their specs which is why the six-axis was so lame, it was an after thought!

Xbox will have a lot to live upto with kinect but i think it is a much better idea to be controller free than just release another controller!

I own all three consoles and play the 360 more than other two because the online is just years ahead of ps3, for a start, ps3 private chat is useless and requires out of game status! saying that, 360 did mess up by being standard dvd and i am surprised that the new console STILL isnt blu-ray.

For those of u that dont believe i have these consoles pls check

360= A Knobhead
ps3= knobhead
wii= cant remember cause u gotta use the long ass number instead of a simple tag like ps3 and xbox

good luck to all three imho, its us that benefit so stop complaining about consoles u dont have and enjoy what u do

At the end of the day they all have great technology which has come on along way. Why does everyone get all defensive if they own an xbox and someone calls it crap, same for PS3. Buy what you want and dont worry about other people. If you want to have some fun with no controler get Kinect if not get PS Move or the Wii.

I like playing PS move sport champion (archey and frizzbe gold is awsome), but I equally like wii sports and I will be getting kinect for my 360.

No need for all the BS that people post on here. Chill out and enjoy life.

Thanks for a good article. I own an Xbox 360s and PS3 slim and also have both move and kinect. Kinect is currently used the most I have to say which is therefore is the winner in my eyes too.

p.s. 'PS3 only' commenters, stop moaning all the time, every forum I'm ever on it's full of ps3 only whingers, I have one too, but feel no need to xbox-hate - the world seems full of them - why maon and hate so much - I dont get it.
