Three reasons PlayStation Vita is no match for iPod touch

CNET Opinion

There's not that much wrong with the PlayStation Vita, Sony's latest handheld -- we awarded it three stars in our review, signalling that it's pretty good. But in the dog-eat-dog world of gaming, 'pretty good' doesn't cut the mustard.

I'm going to lay down three reasons why you'd be better off with an iPod touch, and then explain why even the most muscly-thumbed of joystick-wigglers should have a long, hard think before throwing money at the Vita.

1. It's really, really big

Obviously, right? The Vita is enormogigantic, and is way too big to fit in your pockets, unless it's all you're carrying and you're comfortable strutting about with a massive Vita-shaped bulge in your pantaloons. To lug this monster around all day, you'll definitely need a bag.

"Not a problem!" you might think -- but you'd be sorely mistaken, you poor, poor idiot. The glory of carrying something as tiny as the iPod touch around is that you can bust it out for a joyous jolt of Jetpack Joyride at almost any moment.

Think about it. That means gaming on the toilet, in the queue at Sainsbury's and while your mate goes to the bar to get the next round in. In short, you've occupied those all-too-frequent brain-numbing 30-second moments you hadn't planned for, but wish you could fill. Your friends and loved ones will be sick of it, but they don't understaaand.

Sure, if you've got a flight booked or a bus journey to make you can plan to bring your Vita along, but who wants the stress of planning these things? Better to lose the physical controls in favour of something you can take anywhere without even thinking about it.

2. The Vita is expensive

Like, so expensive. We're talking £219 for the Wi-Fi only model, and £269 if you want the 3G version that lets you use the Internet while you're outside the house (what a treat!).

"That's not so bad," I can practically hear you musing, but add to that the minimum cost of the memory card you'll need (£14.99 on Amazon for the 4GB one) and the cost of one game (let's charitably say £29.90 for Wipeout, though Amazon has Uncharted listed at the wallet-petrifying cost of £37.90), and you're looking at a minimum total spend of £263.89 to get a Vita with one game. That's enough to buy 26,389 penny sweets. And ask yourself -- look deep inside -- right now, would you rather play Wipeout, or eat a Cola bottle?

I rest my case. The iPod touch, meanwhile, costs £153 from Amazon, and the vast majority of its thousands-strong game library cost less than £2, and many are free.

3. Home console gaming on a handheld ain't all that

By this point hardcore gaming nuts will be desperate to reach through their monitors, shake me by the lapels (I wish I could afford lapels) and make me understand that Sony consoles are simply home to a different kind of game -- a more refined breed of electronic entertainment, the sort that features gorgeously rendered cut-scenes and involving narrative arcs, peppered with character development and a sophisticated control scheme.

They are right, of course. While smart phones and allied gadgetry is coming on leaps and bounds in the graphics department (Infinity Blade 2 is the example that usually gets rolled out), a touchscreen gizmo will never replicate the kind of rich, engrossing, testing game experience you get with a proper controller in your hand and a lovely big console humming away under your telly (or a meaty gaming rig and a cool glowing mouse -- have no fear PC gamers, we know you exist).

The Vita can make you feel like your PlayStation 3 is running in the palm of your hand. Hooray for processors. But is that really what you want? Our Vita experience largely involved two things: loading screens and cut-scenes.

The fact is, there are things about home console-style games that you don't want to bother with while you're roaming the urban jungle like some kind of stealthy public-transport tiger. There's every chance that by the time you've fired up a game, waited for it to load, scrolled through loads of menus and booted your save, your bus ride will be over, the lift has reached the ground floor, and it's time to put the Vita away again.

While gadding about town, I'm content with Tiny Wings, satisfied by the instant thrills of Land-a Panda. And when I eventually get back home, Nathan Drake is there waiting for me under the TV (not literally), with his impossibly perfect stubble, ready to welcome me into a proper, blockbuster, loading screen-addled adventure.

You are bias?

Sometimes we get accused of being biased towards a particular company when we write things that condemn or celebrate particular products -- enough so that it's worth addressing.

I don't want Apple to crush Sony (or Nintendo, or Microsoft for that matter) and take over gaming. Actually, to be more accurate, I don't care -- here at CNET UK we respect our readers more than faceless tech giants. In brief, the company that we're 'biased' towards is whichever we think gets you the most bang for your buck.

And if you're shopping for on-the-go gaming, I think the iPod touch has things pretty much sewn up right now. If you don't agree, the comments are the place to have your say. If you're new to the Internet (hello!), you'll find them just below. Oh, we have a Facebook page too -- welcome along.

Yes I do want a ps3 in my pocket and the dumb free game apps keep me amused for 5 minutes on my phone and then they are deleted. I want to play console like games on my break at work. Not some stupid swype to attack game. that is just plain retarded.

Oh dear, well I can tell you are very ****** off at the size of the Vita. Otherwise you are trolling to hear how much people love them.<br />
<br />
IMO the vita is great. All that tech in a small package is going to be epic for homebrew and it's nice have a PS3 controller with u. On top of that the screen is nice so ssh and dlna servers are at your finget tips.<br />
<br />
I love having something to do on the hour bus ride to work.<br />
<br />
the only drawback I can see of it so far is how it handles personal data and the game account.<br />
<br />
each to their own... I like wipeout, keep your cola bottles

Actually, this article is REALLY biased, whatever you say.
So... thanks. I'll completely disregard your useless opinion, and go to someone more trustworthy who outlines BOTH sides of the argument and properly weighs their decision.
I hope Apple paid you a lot for this.

The iPod touch is *incredibly* limited in terms of the type of games you can play. Great, I can touch the screen - what else can I do? Yep, still touching the screen... The Vita does have touch-screen (x2 including the back), but it also has the joysicks, d-pad and physical buttons you need to play proper games.

Yes, the Vita is big, but if it was smaller it would p*ss me off - I want to actually be able to see what I'm playing. You seem to be one of the few people that see the size of the screen as a *bad* thing.

Then there's the type of games you can get on the iPod touch - it's pretty limited to very casual games. Which if, like me, you're on a train for an hour each way to/from work, gets old quickly. If, however, you can play something like Uncharted, FIFA, etc. your journey seems a lot quicker.

iPod touch is a music player with games thrown in as an afterthought. Vita is a gaming console that can also act as a media player (quite admirably and without the need for iTunes). So comparing them like for like (especially in terms of price) seems foolish.

Public transport tiger! I like it. I've only ever really bought angry birds and free fruit ninja on iPhone4 which are great in those short boring periods.

With the amount of other crapola I carry on work road trips, having another device to play games is too much

3 Reasons why CNET believes ipod Touch is better than Vita

1) they cant' do one article without mentioning an Apple product
2) they're funded by Apple
3) they have no idea what they're talking about

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 1 February, 2012 12:12

And all this coming from some guy who says enormogigantic and pantaloons. It's people like you that are trying to steer people away from purchasing in my opinion one of the best pieces of technology I have seen since the ps3. You people can keep your tablets, iPads, and iPods because while you are playing gimmicky games like angry birds, I will be enjoying my Playstation Vita that plays real games.

The vita fits in your pocket, it's bigger than a touch but it still fits (ok, maybe it has to be a coat pocket but you can still take it to the toilet if that's what makes you happy)

Which makes me ask - wouldn't comparing vita to iphone be more appropriate? Why are you so obsessed with the touch?

A lot of people have smart phones - so why would you buy an ipod touch too? After all - it's a smart phone - the 3G. Even if you have an old fashioned nokia - an ipod touch is still 2 devices to lug around in your pocket (to the toilet - which is where we do most gaming right???) , so these people might prefer the vita to a touch (because the games are better - or if you prefer - different).[

Of course, if they want a touch that's fine too - I'm sure people can decide what's most appropriate for themselves.

Cnet - on the Apple payroll much?

Regardless of your little disclaimer, your site has become sooo Apple biased in the last 2 years it's unbelievable, and even if it's with a 'might be' or 'could be' rumor re the iP5 or iP3.

Come on CNet, why do you need to tell us infactual crap that we all assume/or already know without looking at your site? 90% of the time your recycled rumors turn out to be false anyway.

Wish you would just keep to impartial facts in future instead of being the ultimate Apple Fanboy Rumor website that you are rapidly turning into.

I seriously need to find a way to block CNET from my searches, I despise Apple products and their idiotic fanboys and I'm not interested in reading articles claiming that crappy, overpriced Apple products are superior to wonderful game systems like the Vita. Every single time I'm ever linked to a CNET article they say something about how Apple products are sooo much better than the Vita and that Apple products are killing off dedicated handhelds when that can't possibly be further from the truth. It's just absurd how INCORRECT an OPINION can be sometimes. Geez.

That disclaimer doesn't cover your tracks, Westaway, you're clearly either paid to say these things or you need to get fired for writing idiotic articles ASAP. I'd prefer that you get fired, personally, same with all the other people who write for CNET and say such phenomenally idiotic things.

Playing games on an Apple product is like eating some of the worst fast food of your life. Playing games on a dedicated handheld(specifically the Vita) is like eating at a 5-star restaurant. There is no comparison.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 1 February, 2012 13:17

Maybe CNET could actually employ a gamer for these kind of reviews? Clkeraly this reviewer has no understanding of games beyond Angry Birds. Also a very similar article could have been written about Smartphone V Vita, thus at least slightly disguising the Apple bias that is rife on CNET.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 1 February, 2012 13:23

Idiot. First off, an 8GB iPod Touch won't get you far with games. That means you'll be paying $300 for a 32GB- $50 MORE than a Vita. Second, how hard is it REALLY to carry it around?? It's pretty lightweight. Also, if you're buying a Vita, it's NOT gonna be to play Jetpack Joyride. It's going to be to Uncharted and Escape Plan and Little Big Planet. Also, it's not ONLY for console-like games. Look at Escape Plan, look at Gravity Rush. These aren't games you'd normally play on a PS3 or 360. These are games that can only be played on the Vita.

anonymous 1 February, 2012 13:55

Plus as a Home-brew Fan i cant wait to develop some games on this thing beautiful screen dual joysticks....endless possibilities. I dont even know how you put the Ipod/Iphone games in the same category lol. good job C-Net you got yourself an idiot writing for you!!

Vita £30+ per game -100 games, iTouch free - £4 for a masive cataloge of games ~97,000 700,000+ For other apps. If you all ready have a smartphone the vita and to a degree the iTouch are irelivant.

Kicking up a bit of a sandstorm here Luke!

While i agree with the issue of lugging around a Vita and the price of the device and games i can’t quite understand why you have chosen an iPod touch as the best option for gaming on the go....

Yes it is good but trying to play most touch screen games is nearly impossible on a daily regular commute in the urban chaos of London. The tubes and trains move around so much that you will end up frustrated as your jerky fingers shoot your angry birds off in random directions, and that’s of course if you can actually get the damn thing out of your pocket in the first place being crammed in like a sardine!

Thin touchscreen devices may be very fancy but there is something very comforting about having physical buttons to touch when playing a game. I find the easy to control touch screen games are a little boring after a while and the more complex ones leave you wishing you had a third hand to hold the awkwardly shaped device while you play.

I currently own and use a Game Boy micro and find it is the perfect gaming companion.

- it is small enough to fit in your pocket
- There are hundreds of games available on eBay for less than £1
- The games will last long enough that you only ever need to carry one around at a time.
- The device is comfortable to hold and makes you feel more involved.
- It doesn’t cost much at all.

What more do you need? For all other travel requirements my Galaxy SII is there ready and waiting!

So lets stop believing a touch screen device is perfect for everything and start acknowledging there are other better options to buying a Vita.

I'm not sure if the Vita is already released in the US or in Europe but, here in japan it was already released and I have one. I can say it is one of the best things I ever bought. It's like having many gadgets put together into one. The author of this article says that its big. I barely even thought anything about its size when I carry it or put it in my pocket. The buttons may be a little small but the screen is big so overall its not really thaat big. He said it was expensive. I'm not sure if he is saying on purpose or he is just stupid. The quality of the graphic of Vita is just breath-taking. the touch response is super-fast i think(second touch screen device) and the gyroscope sensor is just great. I think the price actually quite cheap. lastly, Home console gaming on a handheld is all. being able to play with other players or friends. Chatting with them and connecting with each other is all that for me. Having a ps3 on my hand is awesome. I can play anytime anywhere. I can play while lying down, while sitting while standing while walking, while eating, while watching TV, while on the toilet, while taking a bath (yes taking a bath), waiting for laundry, while on the bus, while.. you get the point. I just can't believe that the people here on Cnet can be such an ignorant boob. No wonder Nobody reads the articles here anymore.

For me these reasons and many others are why i chose to go with a 3ds this time around. Perfect for me as i tend to do a lot of short bus journeys, so want to avoid loading screens which would prob take up too much of my trip.

Games seem to be broken up into smaller chunks which again is perfect for me (see super mario 3d land)

Don't get me wrong, i can really see the potential in the Vita, but for me it's just to expensive, maybe a bit too big and I have a ps3 and found it to be poorly supported by Sony here in the UK. My fear being will Sony fail to deliver on promises again.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 1 February, 2012 16:09

I can't help but feel that Luke has missed the point of the vita a bit. I'm not going to post something full of vitriol, I'm not a 'hardcore gamer', and I have no plans on getting a vita, but I can see that the vita is targetted at a completely different market than the iPod touch. Can you play skyrim on an iPod touch? It just seems like a bit of a silly point to try and make, and playing into the hands of the people that are convinced that cnet is on the apple payroll. Whilst i don't think that cnet is on the apple payroll I also dont think that Luke is that into games, and as this is a product targetted specifically at people who are, it should probably e reviewed as such.

Food or though: When apple released the iPad everyone said they were trying to answer a question no one had asked. "Who wants a kingsize iPhone that you cannot fit in your pocket! And i can use my laptop for portable computing!!" But where are we now???

5onthe5's avatar

5onthe5 1 February, 2012 16:12

I wonder how far iOS games will go. There are milliions of iPad owners in the world - I would be amazed if some developers don't start to make deeper and more polished games for them. Something like the Nintendo DS Zelda games would be workable on an iPad. iOS sports games are improving all the time. Platformers are just a matter of a good control system.

Plus the iPad 3 will have quite a bit of graphical heft.

Choccie Milk 1 February, 2012 21:12

One thing I'm sure Luke's not suggesting is that the ipod offers a better experience and therefore I suppose it just comes down to whether enough people want a proper gaming experience on the move and I very much hope that there are enough people to keep the handheld industry going strong. Sure a smartphone/ipod can offer some very decent games but if you're going out and know you're going to have to be hanging around, going on a journey or on holiday your always going to want a dedicated gaming platform. There's only so much you can do with a touch screen.
Surely there must be enough people who want to be able to play a proper games on the go (mario kart on the tube anyone) and I think the sales of the 3DS show that dedicated handheld gaming consoles aren't dead (which would be nice of you to recognise in your podcast where you said that it appears that handheld gaming is dead due to the sales of the Vita). If handheld gaming was to die which I very much doubt because of game apps I'd be very sad as I'd never be able to play games of quality on the move.
I definately see your points on the Vita's portability it seems like a bit of an oversight to me but most people have bags while travelling.
And one last thing the title of this article seems designed to get people ranting, to suggest that the Vita is nowhere near as good as an ipod is ridiculous and only going get people to say even more ridiculous thing such as Apple pays you. A;though an important thing to note is the big OPINION written on the top of the page.

Finally some non biased source is raking the Vita over the highly neglected coals. The Vita has to go down for the biggest ripoff for personal handheld gaming.

Why?

No included memory, proprietary memory cards that are a ripoff, games on carts with no save data room, games that will not load unless you buy the proprietary over priced memory card, 3G offering that is too slow for online gaming making its actual existence questionable, no backwards compatibility, over priced digital version of physical games to actually give incentive for people to purchase them, a list of games that are just smartphone and tablet games making those games pointless, an expensive screen with almost no reason to have it when developers wont push games to that extent on carts because larger carts cost too much, a list of watered down console games that have only appeal to PSP owners that were brainwashed into believing portables should play bad console games instead of great portable games, a horrible battery life with no way to improve upon it, and a crappy design that makes it not a pocket portable unless you own jumbo pockets or force people to carry a purse.

At least the PSPGO had 16GB of built in memory. Could Sony make it any more clear that they do not care about their customers?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 1 February, 2012 23:20

from a another website:

"Let’s not beat around the bush; we like the PlayStation Vita, we like it a lot. In fact, we’re happy to say that we have never fallen for a handheld games console as much as we have the PS Vita. It is to hardcore gamers what a Penny Black is to a philatelist.

Admittedly, it has few rivals battling for our affections. There’s the Nintendo 3DS and, er, that’s it. Some might say that the Apple iPhone or iPod touch are valid competitors, but to compare it to an iOS device, in gaming terms, is to compare a Lamborghini to a Ford Ka, and anybody who tries will come across as an idiot."

enough said!

anonymous 1 February, 2012 23:21

In no way can the iPod touch compare to a real portable gaming console. No one wants to play Angry Birds for 2-3 hours on a flight. I, however am still skeptical of the Vita. I don't like playing shoot em ups like Uncharted on a 5 inch screen. Nintendo had issues selling the 3DS because there weren't any good games out immediately, and in my opinion Sony is right on track to have the same problem. Nintendo has been dominant in the handheld world of gaming (not bullshit iPod games) for almost 14 years and I don't see Sony making the right moves to change that.

You say you are not biased but how can you recommend a mp3 player to people if they are looking for a portable game console?

Comparing apples (funny right?) to oranges is just plain wrong.

0.99-10$ apps only offer a few minutes or at most an hour of entertainment but on the other hand a game like Uncharted Golden Abyss with it's deep story, multiple game controls and awesome gameplay will keep you hooked for around 12-15 hours.

I wear cargo pants and have no problem lugging around my PSP in Logitech Playgear case. Regular or cargo pocket. I guess it might be large in the pocket if you wear genital smashing Wranglers, or those thin-leg girl-sized emo pants.

iPod has a punier dinosaur-tech screen, a weaker GPU and CPU, no expandable memory port, no user-serviceable battery, no physical controls. Of course it's cheaper.

But you want to talk memory? Apple charges US$100 to upgrade from 8gb iPod to 32gb. That's US$100 for 24gb memory. Sony gives you a full 32gb for that price.

You're just lying your eyes out trying to negative spin Vita games. Let's see here, Bird-poo-flinging or fully-featured console title in the palm of your hand? Gee, I think I'll take the fully-featured game.

Your bias is obvious, especially if you call the iPod touch more bang for your buck. You can't touch Vita-level tech in a smartphone for under US$600 unsubsidized.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 2 February, 2012 07:38

I've been looking for a UK tech site that provides coverage of what's actually going on in the UK - reviews, releases etc. Many of the US sites are so biased towards / obsessed with Apple and/or MS (usually the former) that it's toe-curlingly cringeworthy.

Needless to say I won't be back. Apple fanbois don't make good journalists, or even good proofreaders judging by this piece of inane drivel.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 2 February, 2012 07:54

Actually cnet, to be unbiased would be to have an article with something along the lines of should you get a vita. I like apple personally but you always worship them in your articles.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 2 February, 2012 08:48

I'm sorry but this opinion is a bit biased. By the same logic would you like to say that the iPad is no match for the iPod Touch? I mean it's a bigger screen and does everything that the iPod Touch technically can do. But people do seem to be moving towards the tablet more than the other thing.
Comparing apples to oranges is quite ridiculous to be honest.

Personally I don't think there's any problem in having a few handheld and portable devices. Most people these days do have bags and don't really carry things in their pocket if that's the worry about size really. Honestly the size is actually a good medium not being too large and not being too small which makes it decent for gaming (Which is one of the reasons why people buy an iPad to be fair).

If you want to have a fair criticism you could say it has no internal memory, that's valid but on the plus side it does allow for memory cards which does make it nice like Android devices and if PS Suite takes off we'll probably have certified android apps which puts it on par with them.

As for price now that again is highly dependant. This obviously isn't meant to be in the iPod Touch category the screen for this device is bigger than the face of the iPhone not just the screen. Also they do seem to be willing to try different price ranges. What should be pushed now is PS Suite so we get the so called cheap apps faster, if that is a priority.

As for home console gaming on a handheld? It is all that unless you're someone single with no partners or kids. You can't always hog the TVs and if your partner is into gaming it's nice having your handhelds to last you while they're busy.

Seriously there are valid comparisons that can be had where one trumps the other, but these comparisons are just ridiculous and seem to be bad paid for articles.

I agree that this article comes across as very biased but if you read between the bias there are some good points to be had.

For most people the vita is a bit big to be something you bother carrying around with you..... thats all you need to say there

For most people when you add on memory cards and cost of games, it is pretty expensive and probably not worth forking out that much for most people.

And finally, again, most people arnt fussed enough about having things like uncharted and wipeout on a portable system. Add to this that games for smartphones are getting better and better to a point that saying " I dont want to play angry birds for 3 hours" shows you are completely out of touch with the smartphone gaming marking. There are many games out on there that are way deeper and longer than that. And they are continuing to get better and are a reasonable price.

Is the Vita a great handheld for people who want a home gaming system on the go?..... yes...... but those are the hardcore gamers and only those that want this experience on the go. Most people don't fit into this category and will be happy enough with there smartphones instead.

So yes while this article comes across as biased so do many of these comments.

Where do Cnet get their writers from? Luke’s journalistic career isn’t going to last very long if he continues to insult people reading his article who have a different opinion. That being said, this statement: “"Not a problem!" you might think -- but you'd be sorely mistaken, you poor, poor idiot.” Just reeks of a moron and an editor that needs to be sacked. How can Luke have the audacity to call someone a poor idiot because they believe they can put their PS Vita into a bag and be happy with it? Madness.

So how much did Apple pay you for this article?

As many people have said they are completely different markets. One is a hand held multimedia device, with gaming tagged on. The other is a gaming device with multimedia tagged on. Do your research you poor excuse for a journalist.

"The Vita is expensive
Like, so expensive"

What sort of British ponce wanabe American high schooler used this out of date phrase of "like" in an article that is trying to be taken seriously? It's just like an other proof like cnet like should get like some new journalism like that know what they're talking about.....like!

I am not a fanboy or hater of either company. I strongly believe in buying the best my money can afford and unless I've had a truly awful experience of a past company then I go with who ever I think is best from reviews and users. But this nonsensical Apple loving fascism that Cnet seems to adore needs to stops.

ps. You have something on your nose, it's there. Right there! Oh god! You've just spread it all over your face, that's like disgusting!

This review is like comparing a TI-84 Calculator to a Smart Phone, the PSVita is not meant to compete with Itouch to a precise level, firstly 2 of your points the Itouch/Iphone DO NOT even have, IE: the I-product cannot stream games from a console... Period... Secondly, When I first bought my Itouch 4g when it came out, It cost me $300 Plus Tax, Same as PSV (Wifi), Also to stay current with the Itouch's and Iphones you need the newest ones to use the newest apps in most cases, because most apps can differ between versions, So not only to stay up to date you need to constantly update your product, Let alone, You pay for Apps, Music and Movies and Games just like the Vita, So all that price needs to be added in as well. They are equally Expensive

anonymous 2 February, 2012 16:47

This is dumbest piece crap I have ever read. The vita will blow away any handheld gaming. I have to repeat what some others already said. Games on the iphone, ipod (all apple crap) and any android phone keeps you entertained for 5 - 10 minutes and feel very limited. I want a system that I can play full games with incredible graphics with a controller rather than having to use the touch screen for everything. And in terms of size... If anybody hasnt noticed already but big handhelds are the new thing! Cell phones keep getting bigger and bigger (I've seen 5" - 6" screens already) And anyways people who buy the vita are getting it to play games. Its not a cell phone and even if you are going to use it to listen to music thats not its primary function. Handheld gaming is still alive and no ipod or itouch or tablet is going to replace it.

A games doesn't need to be a full console game to potentially be ruined by the common smartphone form factor. Even the most basic game like Pac-Mac are hindered and if the industry lets the quality of control slip so severely then many genres will suffer and the gaming experience will be dumbed down.

Physical media is another factor, you can't cram all your gmes on an iPods flash memory, do you realise how large many 3DS and PS VITA games are? With iOS you don't even have the option to expand.

I am fed up of these silly, uninformed articles written by people who don't have a proper understanding of gaming and all the elements that make them great.

Here's a thought Luke, why don't you put an Apple sticker on the back of it and then you will be gooing all over it. Let's face it, if it does not bear the Apple logo cnet won't touch it. All I can say is "Dude you're a Barista".

aliward15's avatar

aliward15 2 February, 2012 19:41

I agree. The iPod Touch is cheaper, more easy to carry round and most games are free. Plus, it is much better for a handheld device to be SMALL. Hence the word Handheld. The Good part about the Touch is you can whip it out whenever and shove it back into your Jeans whenever like Luke said. You can't with a vita. So what is the point on taking it out to the shops to play the odd game when your bored if you have to either carry it around, or take a bag?

And I'm fed up with people who always moan at Apple, saying they hate them!! Why? There successful and make great products. Apple came third in the most successful mobile phone brand. It might seem not that good, but they only make THREE phones compared to Samsung, LG, Nokia, HTC who make loads. The iPad is the best tab and the iPod Touch is the only music player/handheld gamer out (oh until Sony decide to 'try' to compete with it with the Vita' All you lot who complain at Apple are just jealous.

And no I'm not biased. I have an iPad but don't have an iPod Touch or the Vita. For handheld gaming, the iPod Touch is the best though.

aliward15's avatar

aliward15 2 February, 2012 19:45

Also, all you lot who say Cnet are biased toward Apple is a load of rubbish. If you look at what Cnet post before you ongoing to complain, you will see that THEY actually voted the Samsung Galaxy S2 the best phone of 2011. Beating the iPhone 4S. So stop complaining.

Luke Westaway. You sir are an absolute idiot.

I can't believe the tripe you're shovelling and it has angered me to the point of actually registering just to tell you so.

Comparing a handheld console to a iPod Touch? Although you are not the first to do this as other such idiots have attempted to, can you tell me Wipeout (or insert other Vita title here) is a comparison to iPod gaming?

No sir, you'll tell me "what about N.O.V.A." etc. Well I can tell you, without bias, I've got an iPhone AND a iPod Touch AND EVEN an iPad! Playing those games is downright annoying. Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja etc are fine. Let's keep it real shall we. One minute games whilst on the loo. Nothing more. Anything even attempting to be engaging and timeworthy pretty much fails on anything less than an iPad because your fingers are covering half the games!!

Do me a favour, keep your cr@p to yourself and either give people an EDUCATED opinion or butt out. Can't believe Cnet have even let you waste space on their website. People like you should stick to being "forum warriors" as that's where THIS level of article had a deserving place.

If you want to listen to music, and play the occasional, undemanding, game, you could do worse than the iPod Touch.

If you're more interested in games, AND a good music experience, the Vita's the better bet.

BUT, if you're thinking of buying into either market, find some reviews of similarly-intended products - DON'T try comparing a jumbo jet with a space shuttle!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 4 February, 2012 15:26

Okay, the third one is manily an opinion and is NOT a goode reason to bash on the system. You are supporting Apple way too much in the article. As one of the commenters said in the comments I agree. Most of those apps in the app store or the Android Market have a life span of maybe 5 mins or a few hours. the vita was made for gaming the iPod Touch was made as an alternative to a phone for whoever didn't want to buy an iPhone. So this articele is just garbage.

anonymous 4 February, 2012 16:07

Did you just call me an idiot? Did you just call everyone an idiot? And you expect us to take you seriously? Its great that you gave your OPINION about the vita and all, but honestly, next time try not reviewing it according to how it fits YOUR ****** lifestyle, IDIOT. The vita is a gaming device that blows the touch out of the water. There's a reason those game cause $2 and below. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but **** man, you are just plain ignorant. Ill buy you your ******* lapels and have my way with you, you poor piece of ****. I agree Luke's sentiment in the review though, if you want a dedicated, proper gaming machine then the Vita is the machine you want. He is absolutely correct.

If you are after a casual lifestyle gadget then of course go for the iOS devices. Glad he made that distinction, clear as day in the text.

Looking forward to reading more from him as he knows his subject matter and context well. Will be sure to let people know that Cnet have out their weight behind the Vita as the prime mobile gaming platform of the now.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous to compare the PS Vita to an iPod Touch.

They're two completely different devices. I'm looking at getting a Vita, and I already own an iPod Touch. Not once have I seriously thought about playing games on my iPod Touch. Why? Because it's an iPod Touch. I bought my iPod to listen to music. Just like I'd buy a PS Vita to play games.

I thought the price was expensive, then I looked back to what I paid for my iPod Touch. £290.

This article (much like the author's review of the PS Vita) seems to me like it's uninformed biased "journalism".

If you're unbiased, I'm Freddy Mercury. Nice to meetcha.

Seriously man, have ever even played a Vita? I'm a proud Vita owner since Dec 20th and there's never a moment where I choose my iphone 4S when it comes to serious gaming. Zombie Wonderland 2, Infinity Blade 2, Where's My Water are fun time killers. But when it comes to REAL gaming, the iOS doesn't stand a change.

You know something funny? Why would Apple make their phone & tablet more powerful with dual core chips, better graphics, etc? Why would there be NVidia Tegra 2 and 3 on the Android tablets? To better simulate console gaming, that's why.

Vita can't beat iPod? Then why the heck the iPod / iPad / iPhone is trying to imitate Vita & 3DS? Answer that, unbiased genius!

You'd be as well having a "3 reasons why a Fridge is better than a TV".

Angry Birds - Overrated.
Fruit Ninja - Overrated.

In this day and age, most of us have smartphones. So that begs the questions, Why would we bother carrying around an ipod touch at all? Apple fanboys will likely have an iPod, Iphone, iPad and an iPod Touch without realising that they all do the same thing. I've owned an iPod and an iPhone 4, both are great pieces of tech, but as for playing games? No.

At least with a PS Vita you can play real games where you aren't fingering your screen, wasting your phones batter and generally covering the action with a greasy crumb filling thumb.

If people like Luke had their way, we'd all be buying Wiis, playing casual games and games like GTA, LA Noire, Skyrim etc will have died.

I don't think the comparison should be between ipod touch and PSV, iPad maybe, if you say vita is big, then iPad is even bigger, big screen is bad, iPad has a bigger screen, control wise, I don't think gamers want the touch when they are in game. so if your opinions was correct, iPad would be a total failure, not Playstation vita.

Reason its called Ps VIta not Playstation "Portable" 2 simply because its not really that portable and its not built to be that portable like the PSP. iPod touch offers lousy games for 9 yr olds and 40 yr olds who are contented to these kind of games..lol..The only games that are worth playing in the iPod Touch is Fifa 12 and chess..seriously im addicted to playing FIFA whenever I get bored in class but when I get my hands on Ps Vita and its FIFA 12 port, im done with my iPod touch.

"I don't want Apple to crush Sony...and take over gaming. Actually, to be more accurate, I don't care"
-Then why did you a mere 2 months ago write an article on CNET titled "Games industry, you deserve to lose to Apple"

I like Apple products, but I also love video games, and there's just no comparison to be made on the gaming front. An ipod touch/ iphone isn't 'better' than the vita, they're just devices made for different things. Iphone is an excellent phone/ media player/ web browser, and the vita is a pure and simple games machine which does it exceedingly well.
Its a shame that CNET feel the need to try and make the ipod out to be an all encompassing master-of-all-trades device, when it isn't. NEWS FLASH: APPLE AREN'T THE BEST AT EVERYTHING

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 February, 2012 05:06

I rarely visit cnet, but because I'm oh so excited about picking up my Vita tomorrow I'm gobbling up anything I can find on it. I think I can agree that Luke is a complete ****... But the bias that everyone is griping about is in the headline... So what did you expect to read? I am one of a few ppl who own 0 apple products. But I can tell readers that there are some insanely engrossing games on the Android (and psn & probably apple) by the developers at GAMEVIL.<br />
<br />
I play the **** out of Zenonia. And they have quite a few old school rpgs with action combat. Sure there's plenty of time wasters too... But that's mobile phone gaming. <br />
<br />
Once I held the Vita, saw I could play it on my tv (if I so choose) and will be able to have a vast amount of software for me, the hardcore gamer, I was all but sucked in. It's gorgeous visuals, responsive control, and at (launch), stacked library you can't go wrong.<br />
<br />
Instead of complaining about the price, which is a bit steep ($250 for wifi, without anything else) it needs to be looked at as another system, compatible with the ps3, not as just a handheld. While Uncharted may not be everyones mobile gaming go to, there's more than enough to give gamers, I repeat, GAMERS, a nice selection.<br />
<br />
If I want to kill time there are games on my phone. If I want to game the welcome home sweet sweet Vita!

I don't mean to offend you but its kinda blatantly obvious.

anonymous 1 March, 2012 14:46

Come on people...why all the hate here!? Luke has a balanced (and quite expertly articulated) opinion on this matter and I for one applaud him for sharing it with us. Thank you Luke.

I mean, who wouldn't love to have a PS3 in their pocket at all times which you could boot up and be playing in 15 nanoseconds or less? That of course is a rhetorical question because obviously every human and indeed most species of fauna would want one. Reality though is that 'on the go gamers' need something that is accessible for a quick blast while they wait for their girlfriends (or boyfriends) outside the H&M changing rooms. Lets face it...the Vita isn't going to stop these people sighing heavily whilst sandwiched between people trying on a gratuitous amount of shoes.

But so what? Some people have this personal quality called 'patience'. Apparently these strange people can go without access to entertainment inducing pixels for several minutes at a time (like some sort of camel I imagine). They don't care about Tiny Wings, or Jet pack Joyride or even Angry Birds.

They may however, need an occasional fix when undergoing prolonged exposure to public transport. Huzzah...as Luke quite rightly states, here we have a use for the Vita! But before you all get on your high, Sony branded, horse, think about how gaming on the go has evolved. Think about what most people need in a portable device. The aforementioned entertainment camels are few and far between. Most people demand access now...not in 5 minutes time. This simple point is all Luke is trying to get across. For all it super-duperness, the Vita is simply not going to cut it for the vast majority of people in H&M or any other tedious, spouse induced situations.

anonymous 8 March, 2012 04:46

WHY THIS ARTICLE IS BOGUS: READ ME!!!

I will break this article down by all your 3 points and then have a wrap up. I will show whoever wrote this article was ignorant and has probably not used a vita yet:

1)"It's really big"

-->The vita screen is AMAZING BECAUSE IT IS BIG (and it's OLED). The controls feel right in your hands BECAUSE IT IS BIG.

Does anyone complain that the Ipad screen is too big?? Vita is an experience made for gamers, it doesn't have to fit comfortably in your pocket because its a powerhouse with a beautiful screen and great controls. Its a different experience than an itouch.

2)"it's expensive"
-->Are you even serious? An ipod touch is more expensive than a Vita. Infact all apple products are pricey. If you are saying the games are expensive it is because they are quality games. Again its a different market. The app store has low-production value games for the casual market.
My wife who is an avid itouch user and very used to paying 99cents for a game had no problem dishing out $35 for RayMan origins because she played the demo and could tell the quality behind it. Its hours and hours of quality game play with amazing graphics. The itouch just doesn't have any games like that by major developers that would be inexpensive.

3)"Home console gaming on a handheld aint all that great"

-->I think you are watching too many Vita advertisements instead of actually analyzing the Vita for what it is. The console functionality is just something that is added on. Its really not the system's main selling point. And you are right, it is not as good as being home, but its great you can do it.

What makes the vita great is:
-it has amazing controls. it has 2 analog sticks, d-pad, front and rear touch controls. Something itouch will NEVER have
-it has an amazing screen. yes it looks nicer than the newest itouch screen.
-the digital store is already populated with great games and it is still a very young system.
-it has the support of major game developers

the negatives are:
-low battery life (but same as 3ds)
-high memory card costs (but on par with apple memory prices)

own a vita and I own and Ipod touch. I love both for different reasons. I feel whoever wrote this hasn't actually owned a Vita to understand it fully, is biased towards Apple, is Ignorant, or just being paid to start controversy.

this article is SMUT. I love apple and i love the vita. But you are comparing apples to oranges here, buddy.

One is for mostly non-gamers who just want an mp3 player with moderen digital functionality and one is for gamers who want buttons and a sweet gaming experience that is portable. The extra apple influenced functionality only serves to make it further awesome.

anonymous 8 March, 2012 10:33

If you like classic games like pacman or whatever, buy an ipod. but if your a true gamer that cares about graphics and controls then go with the vita. i don't really care about not fiiting in the pocket becaue the screen should be big (4. 5 in minimum for handheld). Even the ipad has a small screen (12 in minimum).I think that the vita is alot better for gaming but ipod is more portable.keep in mind that it's the first vita. Maybe next year they will release a model 10x better than the ipod. ipod is at its like what, 4th gen.

and graphics are of vita quality, so thats it both are good systems only the psvita games a very expensive.

Nothing Apple makes is value for money or even worth having. If i want to play something simple and fun i'll play a game on my android phone... the advantage of android phones over apple is they don't make you look like an iPrick.
The PS Vita looks pretty good to me ,but i'm hoping you can edit controls on all games to remove any use of sixaxis and touch, as i already have those gimmicks on my phone and they don't make the gameplay any more immersive or fun.

even thou the ps vita is expensive the ps vita has a high graphic for gaming and touch screen and has two cameras front and back and the two analogs are made for gaming and the ipod touch 4th has a medium graphic for gaming and not suitable for long gaming but ps vita has 3-4 hours battery life and when you jailbreak your ipod touch your ipod will lag. so think before you buy your gadgets.

NO MORE NEW APPS FOR YOU. i cant even download the new Zenonia because of apples retardation(although it makes a great business point to make ppl pay like 200$ for a new one every year). so screw apple.
