Spore to evolve into major motion picture

The pseudo-Darwinian life simulator Spore has been pegged by publisher EA to evolve from video game to full-blown cinematic feature film.

Twentieth Century Fox is behind the CGI movie, and Variety reports that Ice Age director Chris Wedge is splicing its genes. What's unclear is exactly how the schizophrenic sandbox game might translate to 90 minutes of family-friendly linear story-telling.

Essentially, Spore gives gamers the tools to control evolution, from the planet's first single-cell organisms to thriving civilisations of mutant hellbeasts blasting into space and waging war on the universe. The majority of the game's fun, however, lies in the bizarre, unique creatures that your hand in the evolutionary process conjours.

So how well this will work when the control is taken from the gamer and given to a director is anyone's guess. But ten unoptimistic quid says that due to being a 3D creature feature, it'll probably suck primordial ooze. Think Ice Age, only where Sid has six arses, and legs instead of arms.

No wait, that sounds awesome!

No release date has been set. Stuff highlights that a film based on the classic Asteroids game is also in the works.
