Sony's 3D PlayStation 3: Hands-on photos

We heard Sony was showing off a 3D PlayStation 3 here at IFA. Curious, we headed over to the enormous Sony stand, where we discovered a young boy -- DualShock controller in-hand, 3D glasses mounted on his visibly excited face -- playing the PS3's Wipeout racing game on a massive 3D television.
Naturally, we had to kick him off so we could have a play. For the next five minutes we blazed through the game's futuristic raceways with a perception of depth we've never experienced before, all presented in 1080p high-definition and vivid colour. And in just over a year, Sony told us it expects to be selling the same experience in Europe.
Today, our experience involved a standard PS3. All the three-dimensional horsepower comes not from a modified PlayStation, or even special versions of its games -- it's all down to some ingenious picture-processing technology inside a new Bravia TV (currently a prototype). This means it should work with all existing PlayStation 3 games. At least, that's the intention.
At the end of 2010, Sony plans to release this 3D Bravia for use with its games console. But over the following two or three years, we were told, it wants to build the picture-processing technology into the PlayStation itself. That way, gamers will be able to enjoy 3D gaming on any hi-def telly. Plans to incorporate the system into Blu-ray players, and even Vaio laptops, also exist.
The downside is that the picture-processing technology will only work for games -- it requires computer-generated imagery to function, so can't currently be applied to movies and TV shows.
But would that stop you investing? Does a 'PlayStation 3D' sound like your idea of gaming nirvana? Leave your thoughts below.

any tv with 200hz mode will work actually, doesnt have to be sony, just 200 hz
current tech needs a 120 hz tv or pc monitor, of which only 2 exist,. damn,
this is because it send 60 hz of image to each eye using polarised glasses. (not red and green a bit different,(stil 99cents-$5 bucks though)
200 hz obv..is gonna' send each eye 100 hz, the cerrent quality of most hd tvs. 200 hz sets are alredy available, so are 400 and 600 hz, so 200 hz will cost dik al in about hmm, 4 months id say. excellent...
al ps3 needs is a firmware update, and the glasses, costing f*** all , and well...a new 1000 42inch tv...wud b nice
so is it expensive, that depends on wether uve just spent a grand on a 100 hz tv...o dere....
or if u'd like to source out a nice 200 hz model, in the near futre, then basically is FREE,
hapy days, i hope you enjoyed my article everyone, more info than on the CNET post.!

The 3D effect is created by the PS3 and TV. Not just the TV. The PS3 renders two sets of images, left/right eye images, and the polarizing glasses split these off for your eyes. Movies and TV can also be 3D if filmed with a dual lens camera, it works in the same way. The TV is special as it has display these images very fast so it's frequency is much higher than usual 60-100hz of current LCD TV's. Expect to see games/movies/blu-ray coming next year, and this progressing to normal tv in the future.

wrong OLED Tvs are not where the money is, the money is in laser TVs.
they produce colors much better and more vibrant and less over saturated than OLEDs can dream of.
LCDs when it comes to colors are still behind CRTs especially the reds just look far to red it looks fake and crappy.
not to mention that laser TVs use less electricity and require less components so their manufacturing cost is much lower than OLEDs and there smaller so TVs will be thinner and lighter.
my LCD is bloody thin but it weighs a tun it took me my dad and my friend to cart it what 5M from the car to my room, try putting that up on my wall it would rip a massive hole into it.

Why do people complain that Sony comes out with some new tech, do you expect them to do it according to your schedule? no one is making you upgrade, that's up to you
And this technology does not use polarization, it uses active shutter glasses which alternately block each eye in sync with the images being displayed. Currently such glasses go usually for $40-$200

Awh that looks amazing. Wipeout HD in 3D? Yes please!
anonymous 8 September, 2009 10:06
the last picture i saw of an oled tv it had a thickness of 3mm.no laser tv is ever going to match that.laser does sound like it might have some potenial in the cinemas but right now all the big companies are backing oled which uses even less electricity than lcd or plasma and has contrast ratio of a million to one.i have heard that number could stretch to a billion to one.$40-$200 eh.you should come live in england my friend, that price just doubled.

actually i'm very confused about a thing,i have a ps3 and i don't have an HDTV,this is not the question ,is this means that all the games will be playable on 3D only like at the end of 2010 do ihave to buy a 3D TV to be able to play games or what???????!!!!!!!!
may be my question seems stupid, but really am i obliged to?
here in the middle east the PS3 2000 SR and the game only costs 200-300 SR, so 3D TV is going to be quiet amazing but also expensive,so my point is will the games only work for 3d and standard TV gamers won't have a chance to play any games or not?
thank you

At the Game Developers Conference they had a couple PS3s setup with the 3D glasses and it was intense. The precision and detail of how things appear is amazing. You could experience a full sensory overload playing Wipeout HD on a Zone race track. Although, developers will need to work out a proper HUD for 3D. When you played the games, the hud appear to be on an almost glass like plane, that forced you to shift focus from the race to the HUD. Which caused some eye strain after 8 minutes. And if you ask me, this technology would be really give Sony a push in bluray movies as well.

anonymous 19 September, 2009 17:46
